It Turns Yellow After Reading

Okay, I wasn't going to review the book, but it's too good not to review.

Nick Kolenda has done a masterful job of taking complex psychological issues and techniques discovered through imaginative researchers, and reduced them to simple explanations we can all understand. He's done it with humor, while at the same time treating it as the serious subject that it really is. He says in his foreword or introduction (somewhere) that he hopes this will be the most underlined/highlighted book in our libraries. Turns out he's right.

You know a book is well written when it is not only entertaining, but also so densely packed with interesting stuff that most of it is turned yellow by enthusiastic highlighting. This is one of those books.

The book is very informative and presents a good starting point on improving a person's interaction with others in terms of persuasion. I bought the book to help over come my introversion problem when talking with clients, as I am starting a photography business. While reading it I saw a lot of great marketing examples provided that take you past interpersonal communication and address mass marketing techniques. Whether going into sales or just wanting to be able to talk with others better this book will help.

The book could use a few more examples and and some of the smaller points could be lengthened, but over all it's a fun and informative read.

A well organised presentation of a complex subject

This is an excellent overview of the field of persuasion - the organisation of the concepts and ideas is exemplary, nice occasional touch of humour too that makes for an entertaining as well as an informative read. I stopped short of giving the book five stars only because of my long time skepticism with regard to the social 'sciences' generally. Are the behavioural studies so well documented in Methods of Persuasion ever replicated? Surely a safeguard against jumping to conclusions, given that, in my awareness at least, laboratory results are notorious for not mapping over into the complexities of everyday life. Perhaps they are and have been repeated many times with similar results but it's not mentioned in the book (perhaps they have been with different results, that's not unknown). Sometimes test samples seem very small. I once encountered sweeping generalisations made about human nature based on a single experiment with 19 participants, two of whom dropped out part way through! Do behavioural researchers ever ask the question, "What else could it be?" When, say, 63% of people tested do A rather than B or C, is there ever any follow up to find out why the other 37% did something else and what that could tell us? When researchers select their test subjects in the first place, how do they protect themselves from subconscious perceptions that might create a self-fulfilling prophecy for their own pet theory? It's not unknown for behavioural studies to be constructed with a particular end in mind and for the researchers to subsequently claim objectivity even though it's doubtful that such a thing exists in the matter of human behaviour. Bertram Forer's 1948 personality test experiment (which I know has been replicated with similar results numerous times) isn't mentioned in this book, for example. Having said all that, these are personal criticisms of the subject of the book not of the book itself. If somebody were to ask my opinion of a good place to start to understand the art and skills of persuasion, I would tell them that Nick Kolenda's Methods of Persuasion is a great place to start.

Just buy it! Even though I'm less than 1/2 way through the book, I've already

1st hand. BRILLIANT!

LOVE this book - Recently started teaching a sales class at work for my team, and came across this text the second week into it.

Made me seriously stop and rethink if I should try to re-launch the class around some of the amazing research in this book. Incredibly helpful and insightful. Makes me hate to recommend the book because a lot of the tools and insight from the text is so good, helpful, and proven to work that I wouldn't want anyone else to use it.
