I bought MGR based entirely on the strength of its trailer. I haven't played a Metal Gear game since the NES port of MG1, and I don't consider myself a franchise fan.

MGR takes place in the Metal Gear Solid universe, but focuses less on stealth and more on melee combat. Gameplay is typical of melee in other Platinum games, and bares a strong resemblance to the Clover offering God Hand. In other words there are combos, different weapons, counters, and a volume of move complexity verging on full-on fighting game play. Protagonist Raiden can also enter a sort of bullet time to make targeted chops at enemies; well placed cuts in this mode sever limbs and may unlock additional lore/items/experience. There are also grenades and missile launchers, ostensibly for fighting larger mechanical enemies, but these are so inferior to your sword that at any difficulty above Easy it's not worth bothering. Combat in MGR is meaty and satisfying, and genuinely operatic in places (in your first boss fight you vivisect a building-sized Metal Gear after a battle that spans a street, two rooftops, and a belltower).

But this IS a Hideo Kojima game, meaning that it's not just action but talking as well. MGR is by no means a long game, but it boasts an immense script, and characters will gladly suspend their breakneck battles to have lengthy conversations about the nature of war and the role of information in society. It's all in service to the plot, and fairly well written, but many players will rightly feel that the flow of the game is interrupted by these side-trips into political philosophy. From what I understand, Metal Gear fans will be right at home. By contrast the story itself is ludicrously over-the-top, with a climax that you owe it to yourself not to spoil online.

Great great game. MGR:R just adds to my love of the Metal Gear games. Even a game that is unlike the others entertained me so much on many levels. I always wait until the price drops, so...if you haven't played it yet, it's an awesome value to get it now.

The gameplay is fun. I was told it's best on the computer...1080p! Looks amazing. I also used my PS3 controller to play. Not missing anything from the consoles unless you want points/trophies, which you do get on Steam as well.

My apologies, for any confusion my original review, may have caused. This game is fun and does play great. However, for some odd reason my TV cannot go to 1080p when I change the resolution settings. It claims the "mode is not supported". However my monitor works at 1080p. I can only blame the poor coding to the game, as EVERY PC game I play on my TV works perfectly fine at 1080p. It's a known cause, but no support to actually fix the issue has become available. I'm afraid a change in review is in order and I have to take a star. But mainly to fix a complaint towards my poor choice of wording.

Buyer Beware!
I purchased this game to show off my newly built PC / monitor to only find out that the highest resolution is 1920x1080p. If I had a traditional 16:9 monitor, this wouldn't be so bad but I own an LG Ultrawide (21:9 34UM94-P). The image stretches across the entire monitor making it unplayable.

Also trying to use a traditional monitor, I noticed that the game would not increase past 1080p. This means is you have a 1440p or 4K monitor, it wouldn't look good at all as it's not using all of the pixel space or native resolution of your monitor.

One of the few PC ports of a game ever from console. Smooth controls. Good graphics. Good audio. Good game Mechanics. I had no problems playing this game on my gaming PC(granted it is a high end gaming machine) but still glitches I found none while playing the game if they were there I did not see or notice them. I recommend this game to PC gamers because it works and is alot of fun with a badass MC.

Raiden makes me laugh. It was a good action game on the side of Metal Gear. Performance, view, engine, etc. great. Story was lacking, but that's action games for ya. Metal Gear and Japanese-esque game/anime humor is expected. Check out my steam profile for pictures

This is a big event for PC since both Konami and Platinum have never released a PC port to any of their games so far. Of course, since they design console games, playing this game with a controller is a must to get the full experience the developers wanted us to have. But it is still amazing that we can have this console experience without having to buy a console. If less people complain and see how awesome this is, then we could get more PC ports in the future, like Metal Gear Solid V.

Anyways, about the game itself, the combat is great. My favourite aspect is the balance of making you feel challeneged while also making you feel powerful. I would compare this a lot to the Batman games where you are given a set of basic maneuvers (more unlock with XP) which the player learns to master as the game continues while always upping the challenge. Replaying earlier levels after finishing the game makes you feel unstoppable. You never feel frustrated (aside from maybe the final boss battle) since you know you have the tools to defeat whatever obstacle comes your way.

The combat is fluid, fast, smooth and tight. I have never experienced anything like this on PC and I really hope this is the start to more console exclusives coming our way. The pacing is also great. Everytime you feel actions are repetitive, a new enemy typ comes along, or better yet, you are treated to a boss fight. And these are METAL GEAR Boss Fights, so get ready for some epic stuff. The bosses remind me a bit of the ones in MGS 3 where they all have a particular ability and are a clan with a past that is never fully adressed, standing in your way one by one to stop you.
