Great Place to Begin Learning about Modern China

I read this book for the first time in 2008, just before the start of the 2008 summer Olympics and then again in November 2009. China has been touted as the next super power. After reading this book, I don't see how this will happen without political change. A country that treats its citizens so poorly will never truly be great. I have read many books about China and have found "Out of Mao's Shadow: The Struggle for the Soul of a New China" to be one of the most insightful. I was drawn into the lives of each person Mr. Pan wrote about and always wanted to know more.

Pan opens with the funeral of Zhao Ziyang the only communist party member to try to stop the Tiananmen Massacre of June 4, 1989. Zhao Ziyang urged Deng Xiaoping not to send troops against the students. For his efforts and stand, Zhao remained under house arrest for the rest of his life. The communist party did its best to hide his death and funeral arrangements from the people.

We get an idea of how Mao operated through the efforts of documentary film maker Hu Jie who brought to life communist party member Lin Zhao who spoke out during the Hundred Flowers movement and was arrested during the Anti Rightist Campaign. The audacity of Mao to think that he was beyond criticism is unbelievable to most of us in the United States. Mao issued the invitation to people to participate in the Hundred Flowers movement, which basically asked people to tell the government what they thought about it. Mao got angry when people actually did what he asked them to do so he arrested them all in the Anti Rightist campaign. Move on to the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution where the communist party basically turned its back on the people that brought its members into power and who the party had pledged to help by making their lives better. Now instead of warlords and landlords the poor have to deal with corrupt party officials such as Zhang Xide who behaves worse than a Roman tax collector in his efforts to extract as much as possible from the people under his control.

I wanted to stand and cheer for the brave individuals willing to take a stand to try to improve the government. From Doctor Jiang Yanyong, who exposed the SARS cover-up and the newspaper editor, Cheng Yizhong, who did not want to publish lies about SARS and who continually pushed the envelope when it came to what he allowed his paper to print to the civil rights lawyers working within a corrupt system to try to get justice for their clients. Some of these lawyers, such as Gao Zhisheng who was arrested and tortured in 2007 and who was arrested again in February 2009, have paid a price much higher than any United States citizen would consider. Incidentally, Gao has not been seen since his second arrest, his family has escaped to the US and does not know where he is or whether he is even alive. After reading this book for the second time, I remain convinced that although China will probably continue to experience great economic growth it will never be truly great.

You Will Enjoy This Book if You Enjoy Chinese History

I really enjoyed reading and listenting to this book. I've read a lot of books on Chinese history during the period from World War II, to today and first hand views of China. But this book shows how really corrupt the Communist government is, and the struggles of the common man to make a living under Communism. The examples and first hand reports from the author are amazing. I think you will enjoy this book if you are a Chinese history buff. I loved listening to the book in my car because I could never pronounce the names correctly, but the reader definitely does, and that helps a lot. I will have to listen/read this book again so I can absorb it better. This is a book you will "hear" it better each time you read/listen to it.

Pan's in-depth interviewing of enterprising and high-minded Chinese individuals from many different walks of life provides an interesting contrast with the books on China that try to read the tea leaves of the PRC's secretive Communist rulers. In one way or another, all of the individuals Pan features have come up against one or more of the unjust and rights-infringing institutions and practices of the PRC party-state and its authoritarian state capitalism. An example is the public's right to timely knowledge about a medical epidemic in its midst. Dr. Jiang Yanyong, the physician who refused to go along with the party-led cover-up of the SARS epidemic, risked being fired or jailed when publicizing the facts about the SARS epidemic in order that timely and appropriate medical and public health countermeasures could be adopted both in China and overseas. Another impressive individual featured is the blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, who helped ordinary provincials in such struggles as the legal fight against party-crony factory bosses who were illegally polluting the land. All in all, Pan provides a series of unforgettable portraits of defenders of human rights at the grassroots level in the PRC.

Was assigned to read this book for a college course and ended up being reasonably impressed by it. It touches on a lot of topics that don't reach the US media community, particularly the ones that the Chinese government has done their best to erase from public memory.

For an assigned read, I was satisfied. It was interesting, engaging, and enlightening, and I'd give it 4 stars, but it is rather depressing in many parts. At least a few more light-hearted moments could have been included. I understand that reality doesn't have a happy ending, but at least try and toss in a few positive views of China.

Still, it was well written and thoughtful, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in what lies beneath the surface of the most populous country in the world.

For anyone interested in learning more about China, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this book. It was written by a journalist for a non-academic audience, AKA it is highly readable, informative, and very enjoyable. I've lived in China for fours years, and I learned A LOT that I did not know about China. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in politics and/or what China has been up to in the past 70 years.

This well written book delves deeply into the lives of real people, recounting the incredible hardships and atrocities they endured. The blatant corruption at all levels of the Party was made possible by imprisonment with out trial and a complete lack of the rule of law. Of great concern is that it still goes on, almost 20 years since this book was written.After reading it one cannot help wonder does China have a soul?
