When I first took a look at the DVD cover picture of this movie and read a few quotes praising it, I just assumed this was a comedy or even a romantic comedy type when I rented it. It is not. It is a very heartfelt and poignant story of how dissimilar lives collide on several levels and then all work their way together. Only, not right away. Written and directed by Ted Koland, this entire story isn't completely understood until toward the end. And for myself, it is an emotional film at times, with the ending being even more so which was worth the view.

The movie begins with the wedding reception of Kristin (Jessica Weixler) and Scott (Justin Long). Scott's Best Man and long term friend that he really does not see often enough, Lumpy (Tyler Labine), gets way overboard with his drinking. Before he is convinced that he needs to go to his room and sleep this off, he demands that Scott takes an envelope of cash as he forgot to purchase a wedding gift. While in his room, he begins acting up, jumping on the bed in a completely drunken state, falls and hits his head dangerously hard. Quite sadly he then locks himself out of the building and within a stupor collapses out on the hotel grounds ... Dead from that fatal blow. This, of course, throws the newly married couple into a panic over the death of a friend and the definite change of their subsequent plans. They must use that Honeymoon money to ship the body back to Minneapolis, Minnesota for his funeral and burial. To say the least, the across the country ride there is tense and unhappy as they are supposed to be under palm trees and sipping drinks wearing "Caftans". Now they are driving to northern Minnesota and must inform his young friend, Ramsey, what they have discovered about his untimely death and upcoming funeral.

The world is a very rotten place, most of the time. Yet when I have been the recipient of or have witnessed kindness (the unsolicited act of individuals--strangers being kind to one another, for no good reason), I have hope. That sums-up my view of this fine little picture. The performances are good, but Jess Weixler is the standout for me. She's good, in fact, she is talented. We don't see that very often.

I was a bit disappointed with the back story. So I know the hotel was in Bloomington, MN, yet they made the wedding somewhere in the Southwest. Lumpy character could have been so much more in the beginning. They must have left a lot on the cutting room floor.

This one surprised me by being better than I expected. I thought it would be more of a flip, comedic show and it was better than that. I bought it for light entertainment on a road trip and decided to keep it to watch again.

This movie manages to cover so much ground that it's hard to pin down just what to call it. It's a comedy with rather dark overtones, but it doesn't wind up in some dank celler. My only complaint, it should have been much longer, as the story has so much more to tell. The standout is a young actress who manages to pull almost every part of the film together without coming off as a convenient Maypole. And in the end, they guy gets the girl, but he already has the girl & another to boot. You'll see what I mean if you watch this gem. No, it's more like a pearl......

Enjoyed Best Man Down very much. It' a bitter sweet story that shows we may know someone or think we know someone and be really surprised to find another totally different side to this person we thought we had figured out. It's a little gem of a film. Thank out Amazon. Sincerely, Rosario E. Torres. San Antonio,Texas

"It was fun, it was always fun with Lumpy. He was the first real friend I ever had." Lumpy (Labine) is Scott's (Long) best friend and best man at his wedding. When he gets a little out of control Scott tells him to go sleep it off so he doesn't ruin the wedding. The next day everyone is shocked at Lumpy's death and now Scott and his new wife are arranging his funeral instead of honeymooning. When they begin to tell Lumpy's friends about what happened they discover a man they never knew. This is one of the biggest surprises I have ever found in terms of movies. I expected this to be funny for two reasons...Justin Long and Tyler Labine. Those guys are so funny without trying to be that I was looking forward to laughing many times even with the subject matter. What I found out was that not only was I wrong about laughing the entire time but I cried at the end. Labine was a great choice because he is so likable and even though he is only in the movie off and on his presence is felt and that impacts everything. I can not say enough about this movie and I want everyone I know to watch it. It does have moments where I did laugh, it's not morbid even though the plot revolves around death, and the most important thing this movie has is heart without coming off as unbelievably cheesy. This is a near perfect movie and I can't recommend this enough. I loved it. I give this an A+.
