Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2014: How does Stephen King do it? In book after book, writing long (Under the Dome, 11/22/63) or short (Joyland) he manages, nearly always, to tell a compelling story that is both entertaining and somehow profound, or at least thoughtful. His latest, Revival, is vintage King. It’s the perfect mix of baby boomer nostalgia (think Stand By Me) – this guy remembers the 60s with details you usually can only find in photographs – and good old American horror, the kind that was first elevated by such minor writers as, say, Poe and Hawthorne. The story here centers on a reverend who comes to a New England town, befriends and mentors a young boy, and then goes wild with grief when his family dies in an accident; he gives a blasphemous sermon and is, basically, run out of town. Cut to: a couple decades later, when the boy, now a junkie, meets up by chance with the disgraced clergyman, and they form another disturbing relationship. Reverend Jacobs, it turns out, was always more complicated than the stereotypical man of God – he is fascinated by electricity, by science – and pretty demonic, too. How he and Jamie find and fight each other over their lifetimes is as shocking and inevitable as the explosive and, yes, horrorish, climax of the book. Never mind that King’s prose can sometimes lapse into laughable cliché – “like water through a sieve”? Really? – there is absolutely no better storyteller than Stephen King, who keeps us up at night, with fear and fascination and admiration. –Sara Nelson

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a great King but still a good one
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2020
Jamie Morton is just six years old when he meets his town’s new Minister, Charles Jacobs. They forge a firm friendship, which is deepened when Jacobs helps save Jamie’s brother’s voice but after a terrible accident sees the death of Jacobs’ wife and young son he leaves the ministry. Jamie doesn’t think he’ll ever see him again and when he stumbles across him years later and their fates become intertwined he may yet wish that he never met him.

Okay, so first things first, I thoroughly enjoyed “Revival”. It has all the things that make a good Stephen King book; small town America, tragic back story for a character and a little supernatural twinkle. The addiction issues of the narrator are also a fairly common theme for King, who has been open about his own struggles with addiction.

I loved the first person narrative. Jamie Morton is a really interesting character and I felt that the first person narrative really helped me get inside his head. The theme of loss was very prevalent with both Jamie and Charlie Jacobs suffering tragic losses. I liked that King didn’t shy away from the concept of a loss of faith in the face of such tragedy. Jacobs’ loss of faith is seen in a more explosive manner following the death of his wife and son but Jamie’s own faith is also pretty much obliterated by their death and Jacobs’ “terrible sermon” that he delivers shortly after.

Between the title and some of the events happening I could predict where the story was going although there was still a bit of a surprise at the end. The fact that it’s clear that Morton is telling this story after the fact does take away a little of the peril as it’s obvious that he’s going to make it through.

There were some parts that felt a little unnecessary but they didn’t take away from the overall feel of the book so it didn’t spoil it too much.

King’s writing is exquisite, as always, here and I really found myself sucked into Jamie’s world and couldn’t stop reading. It was also nice to see the little nod to “Joyland”. I always like it when King mentions other books, especially when it’s not one of his “big” titles.

While I wouldn’t class this in the same league as the likes of “It” or “The Stand” it’s certainly a good book with an interesting story to tell and, in the most part, King’s writing is always a delight to read.
