A USB microphone of this size was perfect for what I had in mind which was to repurpose the computer for use as a portable audio signaling terminal over HAM radio. For those not familiar the concept is to use audio band signaling to move digital (text and numbers) traffic over a radio channel, pretty much any radio channel but in my case HAM band service. There are two ways to do this, direct coupled with wires and interfaces, or audio coupled using the radio microphone to the computer speakers and the computer microphone to the radio speaker. Just one little problem, my somewhat elderly laptop did not have a microphone, and that is where this product comes in, it supplies the microphone.
The requirement is somewhat demanding, by using multiple tones on multiple frequencies in the audio band specialized software encodes the ones and zeros as tones that can be read as ASCII text on the other end of the radio link. With sophisticated techniques the software can build enough redundancy into the tone signaling to make it possible to send and receive error free text and numbers over a very noisy radio channel. But to keep it simple I wanted to use audio coupling which is very demanding service for a product like this one. A friend and I had excellent luck in early testing moving data back and forth over a radio channel using my old Dell laptop and FLdigi software. We used audio coupling methods (hold the speaker near the mic, press send on the computer and key the mic, and vice versa).
My experience was the FLdigi software was not the least bit fussy about audio levels provided by the microphone and it worked very well for my purposes. There was a little bit of a configuration struggle getting Windows to pay attention to the microphone but that is more of a Windows issue. For the price it was a great value and exactly what I needed.
My goal in buying this product was to have a voice recognition microphone that I could use without needing to put anything around my neck or head. A failed pretty badly. Even when I put it on a USB extension cable and then got the device close to my mouth, the results were still terrible. frankly this is just a cheap little microphone, and is by far the worst that I have tried. I am returning it.
I did contact support and they suggested that I have a lot of background noise. The problem is that the three other microphones that I compared two were in exactly the same situation and they all performed a lot better.
I tried a few times to set this up to work with Dragon voice and the program first said that the volume was too low, even though in the control panel I had it cranked up all the way. When I shouted into the microphone to get to the next screen, I was able to see the output characteristics. And Dragon at its very best still gave an extremely low score. Indeed on playing back what Dragon was able to record, I could tell that it was still very quiet and sounded quite dull as well. This just seems like a really cheap microphone.
My suggestion for voice recognition is to simply get a headset with a microphone on it. You don't even have to wear the earphones, you can just put the headphones over your neck and angle the microphone up to speak into it. this is actually giving me fantastic results.
The big advantage is its tiny size. It is as small as it looks on the product page, and is barely noticeable when plugged into a USB port.
I used it for a raspberry pi based walkie talkie project. It works well in this application. Linux support is seamless, as it just uses standard USB audio drivers. If you have a small raspberry pi project you need audio input for, and don't mind limited sensitivity and quality, I would give this microphone a shot.
edited 01-07-15 I have to add one more thing to my review.
I am sure others besides myself have more USB devices than slots on their computer. I have this microphone plugged into a 10 port tripplite usb hub which sits about 18" from where I sit. I also have 6 other USB devices plugged into that same hub.
I did a sound check yesterday on a skype call and the microphone performed better than my headset... even sitting about 18" away from the mic. The feedback I got was that this mini mic sounded very clear and that my headset mic sounded like I was far off.

Once I set audio levels correctly on the Pi it works really well.
I can speak to the Alexa/Pi from anywhere in the room and Alexa understands my Scottish accent almost all the time.
The microphone is plug and play, picks up sound easily, very unobtrusive.
5 stars.
