I was new to cast iron. At the time, I just had a Lodge 10", but it was too small for many meals I wanted to make. At $15, this T-fal 12" was half the price of a Lodge 12". I think this T-fal is made in China, whereas Lodge is USA; I try to support USA products, but frankly I had too many issues with sticking on my Lodge 10". I was concerned this T-fal might be just as troublesome.
- EXPERIENCE OVER 3 MONTHS OF USAGE:
I seasoned it one time only, before initial use. Main usage has been on my electric (coil) stovetop, or popped in the oven. From the get-go, I've had almost zero issues with sticking. When food does stick, it is rarely hard to get off. I don't think I've ever had to scrub hard to get food off... A WORLD of difference compared to my finicky Lodge pan! I seasoned the Lodge numerous times over a year trying to get the non-stick to work correctly. YES, this pan is very heavy--that's just physics if what you want is a BIG IRON pan. It also takes time to heat up evenly--again, just physics.
I will say, though, that if you use burners smaller than the diameter of the pan you may have issues with the outer edge not cooking as fast as the portion in contact with the heat source.
- SUMMARY:
Bought this as a "backup" for when my other cast iron is too small for the job. Had low expectations due to low price / apparently made in China. Turns out that this pan was everything I thought cast iron was supposed to be! Now it is my go-to for everyday cooking. Clean-up is FINALLY a breeze and so much less frustrating. Planning to use this as a gift idea.
The one downside of this skillet, as with all cast iron skillets, is that it is rather heavy and hard to wash. It is very difficult to hold it with one hand, since it will put a lot of pressure on the wrist. Washing it while hot can be an ordeal.
Here's some helpful tips:
1. Season it up a couple of times before you cook with it officially: lightly spread some oil on the pan, put it in the oven on 450 for an hour, and repeat that a couple of times. I simply turned on the oven and shoved it in while i was watching tv and let it sit to cool off afterwards.
2. Don't cook eggs on it the first time you use it. these pans BECOME non-stick, they're not born that way. Be a smart human being; cook meats for the first month; bacon, steaks, burgers... things that naturally season your pan and don't have a large tendency to stick.
3. Don't let them sit in water. rinse them off, wipe them down, and put a tablespoon of vegetable oil spread thin for storing. NOT HARD.
**At the end of the day, even if your pan gets a little rust on it, don't just throw it away. Open your computer, go to the almighty google, and research how to safely remove small bits of rust. These pans are meant to be used for a long long time. You'll be healthier and the food you cook will taste wonderful. I myself have not had a single issue, nor has it been hard to clean. Keep it simple people.
Don't be intimidated; you'll be better for cooking with cast iron. You can also brag a little bit; people tend to regard us cast iron chefs in a brighter light. Good luck and enjoy! Great product!
