I loved this movie. The a art work is fantastic. The acting is amazing. The story is wonderfully odd. If you like quirky films, then you will love this one.

I feel like only old souls and artists would get this movie. And if you belong in either category, you will love it. I loved it and wish more movies like this were made. And it's sad that I almost didn't watch it because of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In my opinion, it was brilliant from beginning to end. There's a lot to think about in this movie ... mental illness, cross-gender, acceptance, etc. All while it's kind of light and almost funny. If I were still in college, I would love to analyze it more and write a paper on it. That's how much I enjoyed it.

I normally enjoy lighter movies but I really enjoyed this one. The acting was really good, the story was sad but real, and I loved the scenery (especially the art work) throughout the film.

This movie is not for the simple minded. It is not to be followed completely either. Mental illness can make you think beyond societies normal thought process which I think Franco is trying to get all us to see. We must open our minds to that little sub voice that is always there but we ignore but people whom can hear may have a more in tune sense as to who we really are. I would love to pick Franco's brain and have him do a review of this movie. Very interesting and the acting is amazing. I even shed a tear when Franco died, though how he passed I couldn't quite figure that out. Paint on his face from the bars? Holding his breath? I will have to do more research! Great movie!

This was fantastic. So many things learned and taken away from this touching movie. Even with all of their maladies they came together and created their own quirky little family. Looked upon as cast offs and rejects of society, as many people with mental disabilities are, I realized even they themselves become judgemental of those around them. The actors performances were wonderful. Franco....superb. I appreciated the humor in this movie. When you know people with psychological problems or mental illness, you learn to appreciate humor. If you can't laugh about it...then what can you do??? I like that they presented in an abstract way, that this can happen to anyone, anytime no matter who you are. James was obviously a successful soap actor and by all appearances had a mental breakdown. Some people dont recover. Whatever your interpretation of this movie, its a good watch.

Have you ever known a person who was a 'casualty of life'? Someone, who, through no fault of their own, has become disconnected from society through some sort of mental short circuit? Having known one of these people myself made it easier for me to appreciate this film and the amazing performances that Mr. Franco and his co-stars have crafted for us.

No, this is not The Griswolds Go To Queens.

Everything is carefully laid out here. Even with the tricky window dressing of the 50s & 60s, early on a time stamp of the 1970's is set for us via the television. The camera, radio & telephone (functioning?) are what keeps James moving throughout his day. His sister Patricia doesn't say much, but her actions speak louder than words could. Finally, Catherine appears here, mother-like at first (and even bears a vague resemblance to Mr. Franco's real life Mother from pictures I've seen of his family) but we see that she is not as she appears, either. These three make up a disjointed 'family', and there is also a neighbor who often appears in the house for his own reasons (and has some very memorable scenes).

Some reviews claimed this film was 'boring' or 'slow', however, one has to keep in mind that the main character is mentally travelling at a different speed than most of us are. You have to make that adjustment to follow the story. In fact, there was a scene in a diner where I had to pause and rewind a couple of times, fearing I had missed something (besides the obvious cameo).

I'm not going to give anything away, but I am an admirer of Mr. Franco's films so I was already preparing myself to adjust to the pace of this film as necessary. Of course, I made the Tennessee Williams comparison. Would he have written characters like this if he were alive today?

for the people who don't get this movie, it is not an (entertainer) but it can be an entertainer for the audience who want to think deep, and want to have to pay attention. You have to take a couple of breaks to watch it. A must watch.

It took a few sittings to complete the movie. The main character and his sister suffer from genetic mental factors. Each exhibits a specific aspect of the disease in her/his own way. The care giver and neighbor, though more sane, have their own hang-ups, too. A picture of a dynamic, creative human being and his breakdown was sad.
