This is the second Gigabyte motherboard I have bought, the first one being for my first computer build on an AMD platform. From my experience, a Gigabyte motherboard is inexpensive, high quality, and feature rich.

I bought the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H motherboard to pair up with an Intel i7-4790K CPU. I read an earlier review claiming the i7-4790K did not work on this motherboard. The reviewer's shipped BIOS version was F5, while mine was F6. I used a cheap Celeron CPU to flash the board to the recommended F7 BIOS update. My i7-4790K is working fine on the F7 BIOS.

Why this board is nice:

- LGA 1150 socket (supports latest Intel CPUs)
- Intel Z97 Express Chipset (latest chipset as of this writing)
- SATA Express port
- M.2 connector (great for an Operating System SSD!)
- Choice between Killer(tm) E2200 and Intel gigabit network chips
- Dual RJ-45 Ethernet ports
- Sound card offering 115dB SNR with a built in headphone amp
- Dual BIOS for safer flashing/ reliability

Stuff it has that should be standard:

- Lots of USB 3.0 ports on the back w/ some USB 2.0 (no one cares about PS/2 ports)
- Electrically isolated audio components
- 2-Way SLI or 3-Way Crossfire support
- A CPU_OPT plug (use dual fans on your CPU cooler or a water cooler!)
- Onboard ICs and ESD filters for USB and LAN ports (help prevent electric board failure)

Note: You can only use one of the M.2, SATA Express, or SATA3 ports 4/5 at a time. If you need to check CPU compatibility, download the latest drivers, or utilities for this motherboard you can run a search on "Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H" and consult the manufacturer's support page.

I've never done a motherboard review on Amazon.com before - and I'm not Anand or Tom or any of those guys who do the 12-page-with-graphs-and-photos reviews at the great component review sites. So I'll just say:

Board works great and installs easy.

Things I particularly like:

a) Good selection of add-in card slots, 8 total SATA III ports (6 Intel, 2 Marvell), 2x Gb Ethernet, lots of USB 3.0. Handles either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 front panels, so it'll work no matter how new/old your case.

b) The smaller cable from the power supply is positioned very nicely - not too close to the CPU or to the edge of the board. My last Gigabyte motherboard (7 years ago - still works great) had that smaller cable extremely close to the edge of the board and practically under the CPU fan which made it impossible to unplug. In fact, there's sufficient room around the CPU so the cooler also avoids your memory (or at least, it did for me).

c) All the motherboard drivers (newly downloaded from Gigabyte's site) installed easily on Windows Server 2012 R2, which isn't always the case. Except for the Intel LAN driver - which in a masterful piece of Intel obnoxiousness does not install on Windows Server operating systems by design. Idiots. Fortunately, you can Google for a workaround, so my Intel GbE port is working.

d) The M.2 slot will be peachy keen if M.2 PCIe (not SATA) SSDs ever exist at a reasonable price. Or even a not so reasonable price. Right now: there's only one brand available and although I'm sure it is very nice it costs $$$$$.

UPDATE: Gigabyte has released the M.2 compatibility list and there are two M.2 PCIe components on it, not just one, and one comes in multiple capacities. So the situation is improving already.

PROS:

Sound quality on the board is very solid and can save you from feeling the need to buy additional card.

The video quality of this board is also more than sufficient for non-gaming purposes.

The motherboard is well labeled and the user manual is well written and complete.

Has a more old school looking BIOS to go along with the more graphical one brought on by EUFI. There is a ton of tweaking one can do if they are inclined to do so.

Lots of SATA connectors (6 Intel, 2 Marvell) and 2 chipsets for RAID (Intel & Marvell). Also has a SATA Express and the very new M.2. One caveat to note is SATA connectors 4 & 5, SATA Express and M2 can only be used one at a time.

Plenty of support for USB 3.0 and 2.0.

CONS:

If you use this board in conjunction with a PCI Express 16x graphics card, like I am doing, you will find many of the SATA and related connectors are location directly under the graphics card. It is not a huge deal if you do not plan on plugging and unplugging the connectors much after your initial build but it will definitely not be convenient if you do.

I have read the Killer E2201 software for Windows 8 has a memory leak issue so you may want to look into it before buying. This board has an alternate Ethernet port though.

CONCLUSION:
Overall I have found this to be a very solid board for my build. It worked upon initial boot and I have had no issues with it. Gigabyte continues to earn my business.
