Cruel Capers on the Caribbean (A Kate on Vacation Mystery Book 2) Kindle Edition
Kate is skeptical. Her private detective husband begs her to let it go, but the evidence points more and more toward murder. And she can’t stop thinking about Cora’s teenage daughter who is back in the States with her stepfather. Which is worse, thinking your mother committed suicide or being raised by her killer? Or is Cora’s seemingly-innocent, screenwriter boyfriend the real murderer?
And the toughest question of all... how did Cora’s killer get out of a locked room?
This is the second of the Kate on Vacation novellas, a parallel series to the Kate Huntington mysteries.

About the author

In her youth, Kassandra Lamb had two great passions—psychology and writing. Advised that writers need day jobs—and being partial to eating—she studied psychology. Her career as a psychotherapist and college professor taught her much about the dark side of human nature, but also much about resilience, perseverance, and the healing power of laughter. Now retired, she spends most of her time in an alternate universe populated by her fictional characters. The portal to this universe (aka her computer) is located in North Central Florida where her husband and dog catch occasional glimpses of her.
Her first series, set in her native Maryland, stars psychotherapist and amateur sleuth, Kate Huntington. In her newer cozy mystery series set in Florida, Marcia (pronounced Mar-see-a, not Marsha) Banks trains service dogs for combat veterans and solves mysteries in her spare time, with the assistance of her Black Labrador sidekick, Buddy.
Kassandra is now contemplating another series, a police procedural, with a spinoff character from the Kate Huntington mysteries, police lieutenant Judith Anderson.
Kassandra was born in Baltimore and lived in Maryland for the first 50 years of her life. Like Kate Huntington, she was a specialist in trauma recovery for two decades. She also taught psychology at Towson University.

Kate is a pyschotherapist who offers Cora a little friendly advice regarding her current beau, Clem. Unfortunately, Cora is soon found dead, and it is ruled to be a suicide by the ship's doctor. But is it really? Kate can't let it go, much to the dismay of her husband, Skip. He wants all of them to enjoy their vacation - not get caught up in a mystery. (Skip is an investigator, and he isn't taking a cruise to do more work.) No matter: soon enough all 4 friends are deep into the search for the truth about Cora's death.
Several characters are involved in this investigation, but it isn't too hard to keep up with them. And I have to say I enjoyed this story MUCH more than the first in the series. That one felt flat; this one didn't. This was a fun, light read. Not what I would call a page turner, but still a good read. Great distraction from the fact that the entire planet is currently in the grip of the coronavirus that has turned our lives upside down. If you have to be stuck at home for weeks on end, you might as well enjoy some good books. If that means suspense, thrillers, or horror for you, fine. But if you are like me, you want something lighter to read every now and then to break the tension. I highly recommended this book for that (and also if you always prefer the cozies.)
There are 4 books in this series. I have read the first two now and will soon be ready for the third. Hope to find you there to share the experience!
Regardless, the story picks up quickly and it's a breezy read. This is the kind of summer fun mystery you enjoy on the beach or perhaps even on your own cruise vacation! It's light, engaging, and paced well without feeling rushed. It is a short novella, but the story has a full arc and you definitely are kept on your toes throughout.
If you are a mystery fan, what's nice is that this book has all the requisites for a good mystery. The author provides all the information and clues and you meet all the characters. You don't get to the resolution and think, "wait - who's that?" At the same time, it isn't easy to solve. The details are there, but we learn them as the characters do. You have your red herrings and your definite sleight of hand distractions, but they don't scream "red herring," which is great. You know how sometimes you are reading a mystery and you feel like it's obvious the author is trying to hit all the key elements of the genre? Cruel Capers in the Caribbean does not do that. It feels well thought out and the mystery is a legitimate one.
I don't want to give much away, because it's a mystery after all! For a short read, it's packed with a story and I recommend it! It may not stick with you, but it's a wonderful way to pass the time and you will get your time and money's worth. I give this 4 out of 5 bloody handprints!
*We were given this book as part of a review tour for an honest review*
I really liked that the author had put in a lot of research for this book and what happens when a situations occurs on a cruise ship. I would recommend this book.
A very good short mystery. I was impressed with the story, it didn't seemed too rushed and flowed naturally. This reminded me of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The characters have more of a history together that I am sure is seen through the other books. They aren't necessary to read in order to enjoy this story.
I would recommend this novel to mystery fans looking for a quick who-done-it read.
I would give this book 4 fangs.
