The way to connect this extender is by using a Kindle Fire, Android Tablet, iPad or other mobile device. The instructions are not very clear on what you need to install the device. So if you assume you can install this device using your desktop computer and that you'll be able to find the "wireless manager," you probably will have difficulty. In fact, some of the online questions for Netgear and Microsoft are where do you find the manager and how do you make it work. Unfortunately, the answers are typical techno-speak and basically difficult or impossible to follow. So for those who cannot read between the lines of the instructions, the way you install this is:

1) Plug in the device. It will probably take several seconds, sometimes minutes, before the power light registers green. Do not despair. The instructions won't tell you that this will take some time, but it does.
2) Get out your iPad, Kindle Fire, or other WIRELESS tablet or device. DON'T EXPECT TO USE YOUR DESKTOP computer to make the connection. Go to the "Settings" of your wireless device and wait for it to recognize your router name plus a suffix ___EXT. When that appears, choose that wifi connection. You will be asked for the same password you use on your real router. Enter that password.
3) You will be taken to a website for setting up the extender. If you try to access this website from your DESKTOP computer, you'll get an error message. Once you get to this website, the instructions in the package will start to make sense.
4) When you've finished the set up, unplug the extender and take it to the location where you want to boost the wireless connectivity. Again, using your mobile device (or other computer), use the "Settings" menu to find the widi connection.

I purchased one of these for my technology-challenged parents who have a rather large house and their wifi router upstairs. Lots of duct work, pipes, wiring, etc. between the router (in the FAR upper left corner of the house) and the devices in their kitchen, on the deck, in the garage, etc.

The extender was up and running in less than 5 minutes, WPS setup with their TrendNet router could not have been easier. Wifi signal downstairs immediately doubled, or better. Devices that were registering Poor signal with 1-5MBps connections now show excellent and 65MBps+.

I highly recommend this device for anyone who has dead spots, routers upstairs or in the basement or anyone who just needs to extend their G/N wireless signal.

I have the wifi set up in the basement so that my Xbox can stay hardwired to the router (who likes game lag?). That's fine for the basement and first level of our townhome, but in the upstairs bedrooms it makes for a weak, often spotty, signal. I picked up the N300 hoping to extend the wifi upstairs, and it did.

The setup was simple: It asked to be plugged in close to the router, so I did. I just plugged it in and connected to it on my laptop. It asked which wireless network and for the password. Took a few seconds and we were done. I then unplugged it and moved it upstairs where it retained all settings and began its job. Now I am not a networking person by any stretch. I pretty much know how to follow directions, and how to call Comcast if I have a problem. So for this extender to be so simple for me to set up means you should be in the clear.

The good news is the extender does exactly what it's supposed to: extend the wifi upstairs (with full bars). Of course an extender will never be as fast as the basic wifi, so while I can connect to wifi at 10.47Mb/s down, the extender only hit 5.03 (see Customer Images). That's fine because in the ensuing couple weeks devices upstairs have had a nice, consistent internet access without the chronic dropped signal they used to suffer. So while it hasn't been quite fast enough to stream HD vids (for which I blame Comcast, not Netgear), it has given more than enough access for reading on the Kindle, downloading music on the

Setup

I tested all setup capabilities of this device. Manual & WPS setup from the N300 to my router, and manual & WPS setup from my laptop/cell phone to the N300. All worked flawlessly, and were easy to use.

Speed

When connecting to the N300 via Ethernet, the performance was excellent. My internet connection supports 28 Mbps downlink when connected directly to the router, and that’s exactly what I got when connecting to the N300 as well. Latency was also on par to connecting to the router. I was very impressed with this Ethernet bridging functionality.

When connecting to the N300 wirelessly, the performance wasn’t quite as good. I consistently averaged around 22 Mbps, compared to the maximum 28 Mbps I can obtain directly connected to the router or to the N300 as mentioned above. The slower speeds were expected, though, as the N300’s manual also stated performance would be degraded when connecting to it wirelessly.

Range

The N300 significantly increased my Wifi coverage area by repeating the signal. What used to be 1-2 bar areas in my house were increased to full 4 bars, at the same speeds as being right by the router. Extending the range of the Wifi network is obviously the main point of this device (besides the Ethernet bridging) and it fully delivered.

Features

As mentioned above, WPS and manual setups were a breeze. The device has a standard feature set allowing the following:

- Status page showing all connected devices
- Real time statistics, showing the amount of packets tx/rx, and the current Bytes/sec tx/rx
- MAC filtering for access control
- Dynamic or Static IP definition
- Nice form factor and styling. I don't mind having this in clear sight in living areas.
