Pros
Excellent build Quality
Solid DSD playback
Sound stage Punches well above the rated output
Many input options
Small size ideal for desktop use
Cons
Minor glitch at least with my PC during windows media player playback
Not inexpensive you can buy a lower end AV receiver in this price range
It seems others have mentioned, but the driver for the USB seems to be buggy for windows. After extended listening, the sound quality may abruptly become strongly distorted and extremely static-like. This can be resolved by turning the DAC off and on. When setting it up back in July, the drivers were the latest version. I may go check again sometime soon. I have not experienced this via bluetooth, only via USB
Other than that inconvenience, it is a fantastic DAC. Sound quality is A+ 99% of the time
To get around the problem I've first connected a Soundblaster SBX 1095 USB soundcard to the computer, then connected the Soundblaster to the AI-301DA with an optical cable. It's trivial but not being able to playback all sounds from the computer really limits its usefulness (who wants a set of speakers to play youtube videos and games and another set just for music). Again, disappointing that a $600 amp needs a $50 soundcard to do the D to A conversion.
Other than that, the amp is a great size and fits nicely on my desk. I'm feeding JBL L820's with it and it has plenty of power. Clean and quiet.
Oh, I should mention that the amp comes with a remote but not a USB2 cable with standard B-plug (square type that usually plugs into a printer). Worth a mention since few people would have that cable handy and would likely mean a run out to a computer supply store.
1. The driver for Windows 7 seems to not work very well. It will periodically distort and become garbled. I have to go into the Windows control panel and disable/enable the driver to clear the issue every time. Tech support says it's not an issue. I've tried all their suggestions to no avail. At least one other user had the same problem (see the Q&A section in the silver faced AI-301DA product).
2. The Bluetooth receiver doesn't always pick up my iPad/iPhone. Sometimes there is no automatic bluetooth connection and I need to play with the settings on my device or flip the unit from usb to bluetooth to get it to recognize the device.
3. The remote isn't great. It's bigger than it ought to be, it needs to be pointed right at the unit, and you need to give the buttons a fairly decent mash to get it to work.
#1 is the major irritant, the other two are mostly just bad design. Together they're irritating enough that I wish I'd looked around more.
