Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Before you begin, I suggest visiting the Microsoft support website and following their instructions for downloading and installing their Xbox receiver software:
[...]
or just google: wireless xbox 360 controller on pc
I basically followed Brandon's instructions in the comments section, so these steps will be very similar, with just a few small differences.
1. Plug in the device.
2. Let it try to install the driver, it will fail.
3. Go into Control Panel, and underneath System and Security click Find and fix problems.
4. Click the header Hardware and Sound
5. Click Hardware and Devices to start the troubleshooter for hardware and devices.
6. Don't do anything more with the troubleshooter, just let it find the problem and then exit out. (Note: If it gives you a choice to update the driver software on the unknown device you may be able to skip to step 9, if you are unsure then just follow the along with the rest of the directions)
7. You'll need to open up the Device Manager window now. The easiest way on Windows 8 is to hover your mouse in the bottom right corner, click on Settings, then click on PC info. On the left side of the window click the link to Device Manager.
8. You should see a device with a yellow exclamation mark under a section called Unknown Devices. Right click the unknown device and click Update Driver Software...
9. Click Browse my computer for driver software
10. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
11. You'll get a list of device drivers. Make sure you installed the Xbox receiver software from the Microsoft website I mentioned above. If you already have it installed you'll see a driver listed as Xbox 360 Peripherals. Click it and hit Next.
12. You'll see a list of manufacturers and models on the next screen. Select the one that says Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver. If there are multiple copies to choose from select the higher version number (i.e. the most recently updated version), and click next.
13. An update driver warning will pop up saying installation is not recommended because Windows cannot verify compatibility with the hardware. Ignore the warning and select Yes to continue installation.
14. Installation should be complete and successful at this point. Your computer may ask to restart, it's up to you if you want to. Try connecting your controller and testing it out. It should work at that point, so have fun!

I used the Windows 7 x32 (my laptop isn't very beefy or have a great CPU or internal specs)
2- Plug Wireless receiver into USB2 port I'm not 100% sure but I don't think they work with USB3
3- go to control panel > device manager and right click on unknown device then update driver software
4- Click "Browse for driver software on your computer"
5- Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6- Then in the left column click Microsoft and it should show a list in the right column scroll all the way down to the bottom and you should see,
Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver For Windows 6.2.9200.16384 [25/7/2012]
7- Highlight that driver and ok/next and it will give you a message saying that it is not recommended or words to that extent, click ok let it install
8- Check in device manager and it should be installed and you should be able to pair your controller with the receiver as you would on Windows 7
9- Now go to the start menu and click the Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories Status app and check the controller is paired by pressing the guide button.
1) Throw away the disk, it's useless.
2) Plug in the device.
3) Wait for it to attempt an install. It'll fail, but that's normal.
5) Try a troubleshoot. When it asks you what to do, just close out. (I know it sounds weird, but it serves a purpose - trust me here)
4) Go to Devices and Printers.
5) Right click on the "Unknown" or "Unspecified" device. Click on Properties.
6) Click on the Hardware tab.
7) If you see a button that says "Update Driver..." then click it and skip ahead to 11). If not, go to 8)
8) Click on the Properties button on the bottom. It'll bring up a new window.
9) Click on the Driver tab.
10) Click Update driver.
11) -> Browse my computer for driver software.
12) -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Click "Show All" to view all of the drivers.
13) Click on Microsoft. Not "Microsoft." with a period, just plain "Microsoft"
14) Down at the bottom, you'll find "Xbox Wireless yada yada yada." You should get the idea now.
15) You're done, connect with your controller, let the driver install finish and play away!
