Works great with Motorola Lapdock and being able to control my Alienware Alpha with the touchpad and keyboard. I can use all the keys without issue, change the volume on this device on windows, change the brightness, all of the normal keys on a normal keyboard are here as far as I'm aware. It even has ctrl+alt+del but you need to hold down the "fn" key. The benefits of using this cable with the lapdock is I can also attach usb devices to the motorola lapdock like a mouse and usb flash drive. I am not sure if it has enough power for a hard drive though.

I'm pretty sure this cable is data only as well without power so it hasn't caused any issues so far connected to my alienware alpha. I am also able to fit it alongside, without any modification to the cables, the Hisonde® Type D Micro Hdmi Socket Female to Hdmi Male Adapter Cable for Tablet & Cell Phone (after carefully prying off an extra piece of plastic on the motorola lapdock hinge where the connectors are...check my pictures):

TL;DR: This cable works very well if you know what it's used for.

USB has two kinds of connectors: Host (computer) connectors are A. The things on the computer are USB A female ports, and they take USB A male plugs. On the device side, they (usually) have a USB B female port. There's regular, mini, micro, and USB 3.0 adds a new kind of regular and micro B. So the regular USB cable is a USB A male plug to a USB B male plug, of whatever type the device needs. Common nowadays is USB micro-B. Then there's USB C which most people don't use yet and I'm not going into it. :D Clear as mud? Yeah, this is crazy/stupid.

This cable is an extension. It turns a USB micro-B male plug into a USB A male plug. If you have a normal device cable, A-to-micro-B, and you want to turn it into an A-male-to-A-male, you use this extension.

WHY!?!?!?!

There's two reasons you might want this: Some hard drive enclosures stupidly use A-to-A cables for USB 2.0 and 3.0 so that they can use a thin connector and not use a micro-B. I don't know why, maybe it saves them a tenth of a penny in manufacturing. It's a violation of the standard, it's stupid, and you'll only find cheap Chinese manufacturers doing it. If you carry a standard USB 2.0 cable and adapters in your laptop bag instead of all the wacky USB cable combinations, this does useful stuff for you.

The other reason, and the one I bought it for, is "USB OTG" or "USB On-The-Go". After all that effort to make USB one-directional, someone concluded that it was useful for smartphones to have just one connector and be able to be either a device for your computer, or a computer for other devices. Normally you do that by plugging a cable is a USB micro-B male plug to USB A female jack. This lets you connect keyboards or card readers or USB hubs to your phone, if your phone supports it.

But some devices like hubs, card readers, or wired ethernet dongles are being made to plug directly into your phone without any adapter. If you have one of those devices and want to plug it into a normal laptop or desktop, you need this cable. And that's what I got it for: Basically I plug this into a computer (a Raspberry Pi) and I can then connect a USB OTG device to the other end to see if it works for the Raspberry Pi A+ and Zero. And for this, the cable worked just fine!

(The device I plugged into it was cheap Chinese junk that didn't work, but that's not this cable's fault! And the cable saved me from recommending that people buy the Chinese junk in quantity only to discover that 1/3 of them are defective on day one. Thanks weird backward-USB-OTG-to-standard-USB cable!)

Works great for connecting USB OTG drives to a PC.

I can think of only one use case for this : to plug in an OTG device (such as an OTG flash drive) into a PC. It worked perfectly, the drive was detected by Windows without issue. The connection is rather tight and takes a bit of force to connect / disconnect, so be careful. You could also use this together with a regular micro USB cable to feed power into the USB port of a device (such as a Raspberry Pi) to power it, but I believe this is not a recommended practice for the Raspberry Pi (or USB equipment in general).
