An earthquake hits a small Italian town in the middle of the night. The next morning Amy Smith, a British journalist, is missing.
Sal Smith gets ready to fly out to find his wife, only to get the call that her body has been found in the rubble. So now his concern is to bring her back home for burial.
But in Italy he finds that the story she was following snags his attention.
And a text message indicates that maybe Amy wasn't killed in the earthquake at all.

Q&A with the author.
Q. Why do some of your novels focus on the mind or on dark subjects?
A. I've always enjoyed fiction that explores our darkest thoughts and potential capabilities. I believe that normal human beings can be capable of absolute wickedness as well as absolute kindness. It's fun to put them to the test.

Q. Is Dig Deeper part of a series, and if so, what other titles are in the series?
A. Dig Deeper is the first of the Sal Smith thriller series. The next in the series is in "First Draft" stage under the working title of Best Days. It is due for release toward the end of 2015. High Tide will follow that in 2016.

Q. Do you only write series thrillers?
A. No. I have other stand alone thrillers (and a short story) that aren't connected by anything other than their examination of the mind or putting the main character in impossible situations. My novel "You Can't Get Them Back" is about a guy who wakes up from a sixteen year coma to discover that his wife has been murdered (along with a mother and baby) - and he is the only suspect. "Inheritance" is about a a woman whose life starts to spiral out of control after a head injury. She battles through visions and nightmares to fight for her sanity, only to discover a frightening past she knew nothing about. "Sudden Exit" is about a guy who is looking out into his back garden only to see a man plummet from the sky onto the guinea pig hutch. Once the body has been hauled away, he finds something that could change his life forever. But things take a nasty turn, putting his sick daughter in mortal danger. And he can't change the choices he's made. My short story "No More Sunshine" looks at a man who, mentally, just can't take it anymore, but the action he takes leads to unintended consequences.

Great suspense, a little much sometimes

I liked this book very much. It requires suspension of disbelief at times to believe that a photographer, regardless of his previous life experience, could do all this one did...take out six or more men trying to kill him while suffering blood loss from a serious dog bite, and other superhuman feats. It just doesn't add up, but the story is good enough that I will give the author that!

The only real criticism that I have should have been caught by a proofreader: the repeated use of it's for the possessive (its). The apostrophe in this case is a substitute for the letter I, as in "it is." The possessive of it is its without an apostrophe. The other thing that bothered this former proofreader was the use of the word principle in place of principal. A school has a principal (as one enthusiastic teacher taught me, "the principal is your PAL!"). A principle is a fundamental truth or basis of something.

But all in all, a good book of suspense. I will read more from this author.

Thomas couldn't do this wrong if he tried. Sad, suspenseful, thrilling, action packed, intriguing, surprising, and wild. A foreign town comes to life. Characters grab you by the wrist and pull you into their world. I am anxious to see where Sal goes next. And if Nicoli plays a part at all. If not, he should get his own story! I do highly recommend this and all other books from Thomas Wymark.

This author explores many different aspects of how people react to differing situations, and makes the reader think about their own reactions. The story concerns a photo-journalist who pursues a story to the bitter end in tribute to his journalist wife, never knowing who to trust or who to be wary of. As usual in a Thomas Wymark book, people are not always what they seem, and facts are often distorted by those who stand to lose or gain. Worth reading, as are all Thomas Wymark books.

i am so happy to have found thomas wymarks books. the first one i read (inheritance) was already really really good. from a character-development Point of view as from a Story-unfolding-plottwist Point of view.
sadly, as in Inheritance, the same issues occur in this book. Grammatical Errors and sometimes i feel like words are used wrong (I m a non native Speaker so i m not 100% positive about that - very positive about the grammatical Errors though). thats why i only give 4 out of 5 stars.
great Story though and written in a very touching way - i even shed a tear or 2 at the beginning (not many books have ever done this to me so a big thumbs up for this! :) )
