Amy Jarecki has written another wonderful story that will keep you in your seat until the last page.

The laird, Alexander, was broken and you can feel his guilt. His despair is foremost at the beginning of the story. When he comes ashore in England, I cringed when the men of the town beat him and left him for dead.

Lady Jane is in hiding. Tension and fear is rolling off of her when she opens the door and Alex falls onto the floor.

The story will make you feel like crying for both of them. Finding their Happily ever after will not be easy since Lady Jane is determine not to open up and let Alex know what happened to her to make her hide. When Alex leaves, my heart broke for her.

For me it's felt like an excruciatingly s l o w start took a l o n g while to pick then a almost sudden rush to the end.... The beginning for these two for felt like sick turtle going to the dentist, a slow build up can be nice and most times it's what you'd want but not necessarily in a shorter story ,because all you often you get something that's rather ,well in my opinion rather "Top Heavy" long,slow and steady leading to the MC's finally getting together as a couple ( over 1/2 way through the book) then a break up,and a mad dash to the end,finally get back together and then it's all over the end.....
That's what we had here a nice long lead up to Alex an Jane getting together ,they. Finally!! Finally do!!! They barely "been together" 24 hours before they break up and Alex runs off angry like a bloody stupid bull that's seen red .... Honestly I was ticked off w/him,he'd know all along she was a high born woman out there all alone making a go of it ,ok I get why he was pissed,but he should have known if she weren't sharing secrets she must have had w reason Luis she'd mentioned she'd NEVER had sex w/out being Beaten 1st!!! I kept thinking he'd run off cool down and go back, yeah that didn't work for for Dr.Phil...
Let's just say when he came back to her area it was because his family had caught up w/him and a friend of Jane's told how she needed his help .... Long story short I wasn't happy in the HEA when he was telling her he loved her and that they were meant to be ?!?!? Seriously ?? Seriously I wanted to say ? We don't know he having got back for Jane if things hadn't worked in that direction... Alexander DIDN'T purposely do back to where Jane was ,events were written in a way that took him into her "neck of the woods" and thankfully when he happened to find out ,he didn't turn his back on her but .... But he DIDN'T GO LOOKING FOR HER .... and that pissed me off... Troubles or not,if he really " couldn't live without ye" as he tells her,on his ship heading back to Scotland,he wouldn't have left her to begin with... Not my kinda Hero any way ;(

I liked this even though the style of writing struck me as simplistic -- to me there wasn't much depth to the characters.

Lady Jane killed her husband in self-defense. Her husband's valet hid her at a cottage that was well out of the way and brought her supplies when he could. The cottage was little more than a hovel and everything around it was in disrepair. Of course as a lady the heroine had to learn to look after herself.

Alex is the laird of his clan but after the accidental death of his wife he had gone off on his own. His small ship (boat?) barely makes it to shore and the villagers don't give him a warm welcome. He is beaten, robbed and left for dead. Luckily for him he is left not too far from Jane's cottage where he collapses.

She is afraid of him, afraid his people will come looking for him, afraid someone will find her -- she is being hunted for killing her husband. Apparently the punishment for that crime is being burned at the stake. Who knew?

Alex recovers and gets busy making repairs around the place. The attraction between the two grows but neither is wanting to reveal their secrets. When they do succumb to their desires Alex tells her what happened to his wife but Jane can't bring herself to tell her story.

The valet shows up and forces Alex to leave. Jane is discovered and hauled away. The present lord offers her marriage or death -- she chooses death.

Alex's kin have been searching for him and find him, as does the valet. He tells what has happened to the heroine and the rescue begins.

Nice story, not complicated.
