What you need, though, is a reason for the one sister to leave. It must be a viable, believable reason that doesn't feel forced or contrived.
And that's where this book loses its steam.
Sinead is barely hanging on after twin sister Sheila's disappearance many months earlier. In a millinery business together, Sinead's grief has caused a loss of clientele, not to mention distance from her boyfriend, father, brother, and Sheila's husband. After she receives a disturbing prognosis for her professional future, Sinead pulls herself together and hires an assistant.
This proves to be quite fortuitous, because her assistant, newly returned to Ireland from a brief attempt at a fashion career in New York, says she is pretty certain that she saw Sheila over there.
This, of course, sends Sinead into a tizzy. Is Sheila still alive? But how could she be? She's Sinead's twin sister! They were so close! Sheila would never do this to Sinead!
So ... if Sheila left, she had to have a good reason, right?
Caddle lets us know fairly early that Sheila is, in fact, alive and living in New York, and - coincidences of coincidences - she does run into Sinead's future employee on a sidewalk there. Sheila alludes to all sorts of dark reasons for her disappearance, leading me to assume it would be pretty spectacular.
The problem is, it was not. It was anticlimactic to the point that, upon reading it, I said out loud, "That's IT?" The greater mystery, as it turns out, is what's going on with Sheila's husband and the twins' father.
Dear Old Dad's story, while more compelling than Sheila's, nonetheless is a head scratcher. It isn't so much that we can't believe it's true as it is that Sinead's recollections of her father and her treatment of him belie the truth of his character.
There are some very neat, very tidy endings in this book. If you're looking for messiness, this is not the book for you. If you want happy happy, then it might be.
Sinead is likable and pitiable, although she occasionally behaves very selfishly. Sheila, though, is a piece of work. All of Sinead's fond memories of her sister seem to be at odds with the character we see. That anyone would care about this woman is questionable, to say the least.
Parts of this book are really fun to read. When we get in the head of the twins' brother and his love interest, it's enjoyable, cute, and sweet. Sinead's complexity makes her interesting, although, like I said, sometimes you just want to shout at her to stop. Ultimately, however, the problem is the weakness of Sheila's reasons for leaving Ireland. I just did not buy into them.

This book was a lovely story about a family who has been ripped apart by the sudden loss of Sheila. With no body and no hard concrete evidence it makes it hard for this family to move oThe family is stuck between mourning the loss of Sheila to hanging onto the thread of hope that she's still out there. The question is, if Sheila is alive, what could possibly make her want to leave her old life behind.
Colette Caddle so masterfully told this story. You know, it's hard for me to know exactly what it is that makes me enjoy a particular book so much. This time though, it occured to me what it was that had me so hooked. Ms. Caddle was able to leave an air of mystery throughout the entire book, when you found one piece of the puzzle you discoverd another piece missing. This kept you unable to put it down, wanting to discover the answers to the every unfolding mysteries that were uncovered.
That's when you know it's a good book, when an author can give you JUST enough information to where you're not feeling exasperated, but you are working out the answers in your own head and SOMETIMES you might be right, but are thrilled when you discover you just THOUGHT you knew. That's how it was for me with this book. There were some elements that it didn't take me long to figure out, or well that I had at some point figured out prior to the answer being displayed.
Yet, there were other times when I was just DEAD wrong. It happens OCCASSIONALLY that I'm wrong :) I LOVED this book. I loved the characters that Ms. Caddle created and the way she integrated them into the plot. It was a story that felt seamless. It was a relief after some of the books I've read (none that have been reviewed here) where the characters' weren't fully developed and the plots just seemed rushed or there was no "climax".
In "First We Take Manhattan", you have a lovely story of a family broken, long kept secrets that are uncovered, newfound loves, friendship and self-empowerment and discovering what it is that makes you happy is something we all need to find and hold onto if and when we find it.
This is a DEFINITE 5 star book! I cannot reitterate how much I loved this lovely, lovely story! It doesn't appear to yet be available on Kindle, however it doesn't take that long to order and receive it from the UK or Ireland! I got this book within a week of winning it! If you haven't ever read Irish or UK literature / chick lit, I'm telling you that there's something so thrilling about the way these women tell stories! I have found myself searching for new Irish and UK authors when my favs have all been read!

I found the story about the Fields family fascinating. The twins Sheila and Sinead and their successful millinery business. Their smashing brother Max, their father Kieran, a brooding somewhat distant head of the family, and their aunt Birdie who looked after the family over the years but is now sadly suffering from dementia. And there is talented designer Krystie, returned to Ireland from New York after failing to achieve success in The Big Apple and joining Sinead in the hat business.
But a mystery hits the family when Sheila suddenly disappears leaving her car abandoned on a pier. Stricken in their belief that Sheila is dead, may have even taken her own life, they struggle with questions and answers. Sinead misses her twin terribly, goes into a depression, neglects their business and loses the store.
We get all the answers in the end but I find many of them a bit far-fetched. Especially does it not quite ring through that Sheila would go as far as leave her husband and family without a word based on the reasons given in this story. She is searched after by the police, believed dead, it is quite a serious business. An intelligent and responsible woman, it seems to me rather unlikely unless she had suffered from a complete break down.
However, it is a pleasant and at times exciting journey for the reader until aunt Bridie dies and it's time to put the cards on the table. The many characters in the book are interesting and well described. But I expected more of a finale, a real bombshell to top off a charming story in the author's usual easy and entertaining style.
I put it in the category "cozy reading" and recommend it as such. And after all, happy endings are always nice!

It was the first book by Colette Caddle that I read. It caught my eye because it had this word in the title that I couldn’t just ignore…(you probably know how much I love New York..?). I really loved this book, it was a fantastic read from start to finish. I would definitely recommend it and would certainly be reading it again myself.

I loved the strong characterisation and cleverly scripted plot. As a reader, it was a treat to venture from Ireland to Manhattan with such cleverly written ease.
It was certainly one that I just couldn't put down. (Isn't it great when you find a treasure like that?!)
Exciting, emotional and climactic. I'd originally picked this up in print but have now downloaded three of her previous novels on the strength of this it; I think that shows how much I enjoy her writing!
More please!
