I have been a barber for over 30 years; I have tried many different straight edge razors, most with replaceable blades for convenience and sanitation (Even though barbicide kills all viruses, including AIDS-misrepresentation that barbers use as to why we have gone to replaceable blades, or excuses as to why they do not shave all together)
I have spent 100's of dollars on replaceable blade razors, my favorite being a Tondeo. Also different razors use different blades, some are much better than others and you can feel the quality of a blade the minute you take your first swipe on a beard. This razor exceeded my expectations; even the color of it being a flat black-For two reasons, I don't think this blade will rust or show rust at all, secondly when a silver blade is in place, you can clearly see where the razor blade is; rather than it being blurred into another silver razor. You have to focus to very much on where the toe of the blade is; with this black background, you can clearly see the entire blade.
Another problem I have had with razors over time, is that where you place the blade and it's insert, it loosens over time and you have to tighten it sometimes with a pair of pliers. And it is never quite the same again.
This razor has a three step locking procedure which puts the blade in a secure place, and it locked in place with the third "clamp". The blade feature with the finger rest or "tang" opens like a pair of scissors. You place the Derby blade in place against the two tabs and close the top part of the "Scissor" down into place; the tabs will let you know they are in place. The small lever on the top, closes down and locks, tightens the two pieces (scissors) together, and tightly.
I wasn't sure about the quality of blade, as I never have used the derby blades, but right away, when you hold the box in your hand, the weight of these blades is impressive. The shave also is impressive, and doesn't "Sound" like you are shaving someone. Leading with the toe of the blade and gliding down, the shave is silent and smooth; that is what you want. Personna blades and other blades that you snap in two, are very thin, feeling like aluminum and you can hear the scraping of the shave. Overall, for the price of this razor; this is a great buy; you would never know you spent less than 25 bucks on this razor. Extremely impressed, and will buy again, and pass on this brand to other professionals able to legally use the straight edge. All my barber supply places have never carried this type of razor; I feel cheated, that they only carried the extremely expensive blades. As a professional, and a customer, I would highly recommend this razor. Nicely made, nicely packaged, and the minute you hold it, you would think you are holding a very expensive razor! Hope this helps.

I have been using this for a while since I purchased. I would say overall this is a good product considering it's built quality.

There are two things need to be considered if you're buying this:
1. The razor blades come with it is not sharp enough. That's the main reason I can't give this five stars. A pack of dull blades can easily cause cuts and nicks if those who start on a straight razor. That sound counter-intuitive but it's true, in shaving the sharper the blade the easier one can glide. Unless one can precisely form an angle and apply accurate pressure against the skin, which is almost impossible for beginner and it's even extremely hard for the experienced. So if you're new to the straight razor, I would recommend getting sharper blades to start with, instead of the blades from this package.
2. The extended point from above. I'd say straight razors in general is not an easy starting point, no matter what type of blades or razors you get. Especially when you already got used to the disposable/cartridge razor or electrical shaver. Because those easy-to-use products are set up the right blades angle for you already, and almost all of them are also designed to protect you from getting cut. On the flip side, straight razors also named as "cut throat razor", can easily get you cuts and nicks if not handled properly. So be prepared for having some trial and error before you can control it. Having prior safety razor (double edge razor) experience may help a little since you already know how to apply only a little pressure. But still, this is a very different type of tool that required skills and experience.

For $13, you can't go wrong. The Derby blades aren't my favorite, but blades are a matter of personal preference. Some guys love them, some guys hate them. I put in a new blade every time I use it. This is my first shavette, been using a safety razor for about 9 years now. Just as I learned with the safety razor, it takes practice. You can't expect a perfect shave the first time you use it. Every shave I've done with this has been just a little better than the last, so maybe I'll be proficient at it by the time those Derby blades run out. That being said, I enjoy the experience and I think many of the naysayers need to give it some time before they call it a piece of junk. It is on the heavier side. I work with tools for a living so I really don't mind the heft. Maybe I'm just used to the feeling. In my little mind, a heavier tool is usually a better tool.

This works much better than expected, the straight razor they sell at Sallys beauty has a plastic handle, this one from Amazon is actually all steel, very nice looking, even better, it cuts hair like it's melted better, very sharp, so be careful putting a blade in it, this will fillet you, I strongly recommend this to anyone looking for a straight razor, also the blades are only good for two trims on your hair, one blade per shave on your face, they get dull fast, but you get a hundred blades

Nice little set up with the replaceable blades. The only downside I see is that the inside of the clamp that holds the blade gets a little rusty if you don't clean it and dry it after each use. Oh and don't forget to swap the blade every time too...in fact maybe the blade is where the rust is coming from?...hmmm. Ok, I recommend this product.
