Character Development:
The author does such an unbelievable job of blending the animal behavior in so well with the human side thus creating characters that are so realistic for a paranormal story that it is so easy to suspend belief and actually see the characters in your mind. The wolf shifters behave like wolves, the feline shifters do not act like lap cats, and bears lumber. The attitudes of the animal side are so well incorporated in the characters to make them real to the reader and cause a laughing spell. The characters are so well portrayed that a mental picture is easily established for the reader. You come to know the characters and can’t help but be not only fascinated by them but also care about them.
Humor:
The humor can be considered rude, crude, sarcastic and totally believable for the characters. It is so realistic that you can imagine yourself saying the same thing in the same situation. The interactions between the determined Alpha Males and the Strong Willed Females are some of the funniest moments in the novels that I have ever read. The attitudes of the animal side are so well incorporated in the characters to make them real to the reader and cause a laughing spell. (Warning, do not start reading any of these books in public if you don't want people staring at you when you start giggling uncontrollably. I am a grown woman - I never giggled - until I started reading this series.)
Alpha Males:
Strong, caring, not perfect Alpha Males that when they set their minds to making a certain female his – has no problem being as sneaky as a feline, as determined as a wolf or as patience as a bear. Each novel involves a different Alpha who comes across that particular female that just happens to make him want to roar or howl to let everyone know that she is his and his only, if he can only get that suborn female to acknowledge it.
Strong Female Characters:
In the animal world, the female of the breed is often more dangerous than the male and/or capable of taking care of themselves and not waiting to be "rescued". This means that the females in any of Laurenston’s novels are strong, sarcastic and are fighters whether shifter or human. They do not suffer fools or weaklings gladly or at all. It takes a strong Alpha male to even get their attention but he had better not try any sh*t on them or they’ll take his a** down a notch.
Originality and Creativity:
Out of this world! The only way to describe it is to tell you what it is not:
No fated mating – each couple has their own unique reason as why they find themselves attracted to each other – just as in the real world.
None of the same plot line just with a different couple – each novel has a unique plot line – no repeats or rehash.
No cardboard cutouts for characters. Every character has his or hers unique personality – again, just like in the real world.
This still does not touch on how creative the writing is – there are just no words to really describe it.
World Building:
Both the South and New York are used as backdrop for this series and the author successfully incorporates the regions with all their local uniqueness. I did live in New York but, I've lived in the South most of my life and while most parts are urban and not so "country", there is still to this day what one could call "redneck" communities that are as "unique" as Smithville or Smithtown. And YES - there are adults named Sissy and even some Bubbas (I don't like to admit it - but, yes I have known a few of them.)
Editing Problems:
Simply put – there are none.
WARNINGS:
The series must be read in order because the world building is continued from one novel into the next. Also, the previous characters are continued into the next novel as part of the world building which creates a unique world that you are able to visit whenever you get a chance to escape from this reality.
If you like your romance to be sweet with the female protagonist waiting for her "Knight in shining armor" to save her - this novel is not for you.
If you are offended by explicit sex scenes and profanity - again, this novel is not for you.
If you want your hero or male protagonist to be the strong but sensitive type - this novel is not one you will enjoy.
If you do not like or get sarcastic humor - then skip this series.
This is a very long review but please keep reading.
If you look at all my reviews you will see that the first couple pages are all 5* reviews for Shelly Laurenston/ G A Aiken novels as well as a few other authors (after that you can see the good, bad and real ugly). That is because I have done the authors an injustice and am finally catching up on what I should have done a long time ago. I usually do not review all the books in a series unless or until they start to go downhill. I figure that once you are hooked on a series it does not matter what anyone says – you’ll make up your own mind to either stay or quit the series. I did not think that maybe my reviews might actually help on newer books in the series – attract attention from readers who were not even aware of the wonderful writings of the authors. That is why you will see this same review on most of the novels. I actually did an injustice to one of the few writers who actually help me get through this past year events because I just did not want to take the time to write a review.
Last summer, I had several life altering events that happened to me – not the good type either. The events, the constant problems that had to be resolved after, the decisions that had to be made were all devastating emotionally, physically and financially. (The old saying that trouble or bad things come in threes is a lie – it can be multiples of that.) It was a time when I wasn’t taking a day at a time – I was taking it minute by minute – just to get through the next decision – face the next problem. Late one night when once again sleep eluded me, I picked up my e-reader and scanned my books to see if I could distract myself with anything. My eyes fell on my section of Shelly Laurenston novels. I started with the 1st in the series – The Mane Event and for the 1st time during that period I could escape from all the pain, troubles and sorrows that I was experiencing. While I couldn’t laugh – they did make me smile and forget for just a little while everything else. While I have read other author’s novels over the past year, it has been Shelly Laurenston/G A Aiken’s series that I have read over and over again to escape to a more pleasant place – to smile again. And for that, Shelly Laurenston deserves a 5* review on every one of her books that I have practically memorized over the past year.
Very brief synopsis - So Toni, a good girl jackal charged with keeping her prodigy siblings on task and not committing crimes against each other and general humanity, has a chance to secure outside employment. She meets Ricky Lee Reed (LOVE the Reed boys!)by accident, then seems to come upon him again and again. Ricky Lee convinces her to go out with him, then events spiral, and his company ends up on protection detail for Toni, then her entire family. We only hear peripherally about the ring of folks kidnapping/fighting/killing shapeshifters. Seems one of Toni's siblings is up to nefarious things. And wow, is Delilah one creepy shifter.
What works - Toni and Ricky Lee. Toni reminds me of a cross between Jess and Blayne, with touches of Gwennie. With a ton of diplomatic talent. She has the caretaking tendencies of Jess, the capable-of-going-off-the-deep-end-at-any-moment of Blayne, and the nerves of Gwen. Toni is torn between wanting a life of her own, and her complete, sincere belief that her siblings can't make it without her. She is capable of taming the beast that is Bo, but once she gets to a certain point, she kind of has to have a meltdown in order to regroup. Which, let's be honest, is not as atypical as one might like to believe. I liked Toni a lot. She has strengths she isn't even aware of, a deep commitment to her family, and a helpless attraction to Ricky Lee. And she is funny when she loses her ...um...stuff.
Ricky Lee reminds me of Ric. As Beta as you please, he is a study in nonmotion, preferring to "let the entertainment come to him." He completely gets Toni, and goes out of his way to make her life more comfortable. Easier. He cares for her, both in physical ways and emotional ways. He just kind of gets in under her radar and never leaves. A complete sweetheart.
There is no real conflict between Toni and Ricky Lee. The conflict is external, based on the bat-crap crazy sibling, and various job related fiascos for Toni. These two fit from their first encounter, and I loved them together.
The many sightings of characters past - Oh, my Dee Ann love is still strong, and when you couple lots of her with Irene and Miki??? Well, color me a happy reader. Plus Bo, and Blayne(Bland - *snicker*)Gwen and Loch. There is even a Sara sighting! Ah, good times, indeed.
New characters - Olivia, Toni's best friend, gives Dee Ann a run for her money in the scary, scary lady/shifter/killer department. Can't wait to see where she takes us. And I think Vic, a compatriot of Dee Ann's, will be along for that ride.
The usual take no prisoner humor was well evident, as well as the over the top moments we have all come to expect and love from this author.
What didn't work as well - Can't come up with a thing. The story moved well, and kept me entertained from beginning to end.
Bottom line - Time and money very well spent. If you are new to Laurenston's world, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning, with the Mangus Pack. One of the most consistently great series (or two) I have had the pleasure of reading.
Top reviews from other countries

As for the characters, the only two who seem not to be either one dimensional or badly written caricatures are Toni and her friend Livy. Even the main make character comes off as a stalker who's seduction technique seems to be stalk the girl until she inexplicably falls into bed with him.
There are way better shifter romances out there, go find them and leave this book where it belongs. In the unread pile.

The summer in which the book is set has the clan arrive in New York and renting a house across the road from the Wild Dog pack. Jackie Jean-Louis Parker wants to mentor Johnny, the adopted son of the wild dog alpha female. Through Jackie’s machinations gain this mentorship Toni keeps bumping into Ricky Lee Reed a wolf shifter from Tennessee, who works as security and protection in the shifter world. Ricky Lee instantly finds Toni and her family fascinating and goes about trying to gain her interest.
I love that this book is about Toni finding her way apart from her family and that Ricky Lee does his best to help. However, he does not want to separate her from her family and really does like them and her devotion to them. He just wants her to have her own life too.
There is actually quite a lot of plot in this book to keep you interested and as always there is tonnes of banter. I love all the characters in this book, just like I knew from the glimpses I’d seen in the Honey Badger books. I’m glad I got a chance to find out more about them.

Toni's family annoyed me, except Freddie and Dennie and the older two but the rest... oy!
Ricky and Toni's romance wasn't forced and flowed well, loved it.
I'm glad one of the Reed boys got some loving, although I was hoping Rory would get a book too. (I'm rooting for you!)
The plot was well written too and flowed well.
If you're new definitely read the other pride series books first as this one is one of the last. Everything will make more sense that way. Also check out the Magnus trilogy which is the trilogy that started this shifter journey.

On the plus side: I loved Antonella J-L Parker. Her efforts for her crazy family made me smile. On the minus side: there was a lack of some of the action we have seen in earlier stories. Additionally, I did not feel the chemistry between Toni & Reece at all. The book did leave me wanting more though. What will happen to all the wonderful 'new' characters we have been introduced to: such as Livvy, the strange but interesting photographer (funny & scary at the same time). Then there is Vic Barinov, the Russian Bear/ Tiger hybrid.
The story gets 3 1/2 stars from me, not because it average, but because for the first time I was reading a Laurenston book that felt like a 'filler': a book written to fill in the gap between the next important book. All the previous books in the Pride series get 4,or 5, stars from me.

There is a lot more to this story that just boy meets girl, wolf chasing jackal. Many of the fun loving characters that make the Pride series so great are in this book and have their funny quirky moments. There are a couple of stories that are running along side Ricky and Toni's tale as well as the introduction to some new characters, that have become entwined and the ongoing threat to all shifters more intriguing.
What I love is that even though this is the eighth book in the Pride series, the stories and world that has been created by Ms. Laurenston is interesting and the fact that there are many laugh out loud moments and favourite characters are still involved in each book, there is a sense of family and it doesn't matter what type of shifter they maybe, they are all fighting to protect their species.
So looking forward to the next instalment.
