A compact normal-length prime designed for Canon EF-mount DSLRs, the YN 50mm f/1.8 Lens from Yongnuo pairs the classic 50mm focal length with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture to suit working in a variety of situations. Multi-coated glass elements reduce the effects of lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color accuracy. An AF/MF switch on the lens barrel permits quick switching between focusing methods, and the lens can focus as closely as 1.5' to suit photographing close-up subjects. Additionally, gold-plated contacts permit working with all exposure modes as well as transferring lens information to the EXIF data. A tried-and-true lens construction with design enhancements to benefit handling, this lens is an ideal walk-around lens for everyday shooting.

If you have the budget, and you're on the fence, I'd 100% spring for the canon lens over this one.
I have an official canon 24mm lens that I'm comparing this one to.
I was thinking about getting the canon 50mm but when I saw this one for half the price I decided to go for it, and I have to say, it's definately made to be as inexpensive as possible. I don't mind how light it is, or the fact that it feels a little plasticy when handling it, the focus ring has smooth enough operation and that's enough for me as far as build quality goes.
Auto focus works just fine, but is about twice as loud or so as my canon lens, and doesn't feel quite as precise. But it works just fine.
Lens quality is definately the biggest hit you're taking here, you can still get plenty of good photos with this lens, but it's not as easy to get a really good looking photo as it would be with a lens with as good quality as the official canon variant.
Through this lens, things aren't as sharp. While you can get a good looking photo, if you have to zoom or crop it, you're definately going to notice the impact of the cheap glass inside this lens. You also get a small amount of chromatic aberration once you zoom in on pics taken with this lens, it's not noticeable until you zoom in, but if you're going to bring these photos into Photoshop you'll definately see it.

REVISION: Thanks to another user who pointed out that there is also a plastic cover on the inside lens (I had removed the cover from the front lens) I removed it and took some more photos. Well yeah, there is a marked improvement in IQ. Silly me. Who knows how long I would have gone before I noticed it.
TO ALL BUYERS: THERE ARE PLASTIC COVERS ON BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR LENSES!
So now I am happy with the lens and will be using it more than I expected. Thanks again to John Sturmanis!
I have added one more photo. This is a 100% crop, unretouched, after removing the plastic from the inside or rear lens.
