I am amazed by the value for money this laptop provides. I bought it as a desktop replacement, to do DTP and graphic design work, primarily because it has a full HD screen, an Intel Core i5 fifth generation processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive.
I should declare at this point that, for the last year and half, my primary computer has been a Macbook Pro - a computer given to me by my work - with the regular 1200x800 screen, a third gen i5 processor and a 128gb SSD (the IT dept insisted, and I wasn't complaining).
I was expecting the Acer to be slow thanks to its 5400 rpm hard drive and irritating thanks to Windows 8 (I had not experienced this flavour of Windows until now).
I was wrong. Yes, the HDD is slower than an SSD. But it's also huge and the speed difference makes little difference in regular use. Occasionally waiting a few seconds for a large and complex file to load is hardly the end of the world, and the ability to store huge files (I also do video work) is a huge plus. Most people will never run out of space.
I like Windows 8.1 overall. Is it perfect? No. Nor is Mac OSX. And Windows 8 will run OLD stuff. That's not true of Mavericks. The touch-oriented interface loses something because this is not a touchscreen laptop, but it works perfectly well. I spend most of my time on the desktop, and so will you, most likely.
Build quality is pretty good. It's not up to Mac standards, but this offers more than my Mac for less than half the price, and it's pretty solid.
Other things: the screen is a matte finished, Full HD (1920x1080) TN panel. It isn't perfectly colour calibrated (though it can be made much better with Windows own colour calibration) but it is sharp, good looking, and more than bright enough. Don't be put off by the matte finish - it looks good. Unless you're obsessed with glossy displays, you will be very happy.
Sound: the Dolby HD makes a HUGE difference (be sure to switch it on). The sound (from speakers on the bottom) is very good overall. Certainly much better than my MacBook Pro.
Practical stuff: the touchpad is fine, and fairly precise. The keyboard is also fine - good travel and reasonable feedback. The slightly rough key tops are a plus. Neither is as good as the MacBook Pro, but then that is more than twice the price. Connectivity is good - Bluetooth is very stable- actually, better than the MacBook.
In summary, this is a Full HD, core i5 laptop with a 1TB hard drive for less than $500 (when I purchased). I expected it to be OK, but it's better than that- it's a really good product and I'm enjoying it very much.

Ive been using this computer for a few months now, with Ubuntu (Kubuntu flavor).

I cannot recommend it with the windows installed, it is confusing and comes with a mess of random programs that are a PITA to remove. Additionally, the OS takes up an enormous amount of space and there is some random thing in place that puts an arbitrary limit on how far you can shrink the partition.

But with Ubuntu the machine runs very smoothly, it is super fast and the screen is nice. There is a lot of space and it's battery life goes to the full 7 hours it promises. It charges quickly and it is physically durable. The screen is a matte finish with decent viewing angles and high resolution. It stays cool, no overheating, is very quiet, and weighs little for its size.

The downsides I noticed (other than windows and the bloatware) are:
1. Power cord plugs in on the right hand side. I'm used to it being on the left (I think most machines it is?)
2. When I rest my hands on the machine to type, it seems to trigger the touchpad click, so it will stop typing or sometimes move the cursor to another part of the text entry. IDK why this happens because I have set for the touchpad to disable when I am typing, apparently this option is not working and I'm too lazy to figure out how to fix it. But you have to be very gentle with your hands when you're typing to avoid this.
3. Touchpad is too sensitive in general.

All in all, this is a GREAT laptop for its price range. My major complaint is the touchpad. You could get around this by using a wireless mouse and disabling the touchpad alltogether.

DO NOT BUY!!! I bought one of these and had to return it because the touchpad was broken. I got a second one a few days later. I believe the hard drive on this one died. After only about 6 hours of use. I returned this one and decided to get a refund rather than another one. I have always had a good opinion of Acer products but this laptop model has, to say the least, shaken my faith in the company. In my opinion, both of these problems should have been caught by their quality control. It is difficult to find a laptop with this combination of features: AC wi-fi, i5 Broadwell processor, large bright screen. I decided to wait for the other companies to come through and with the new Intel processor and graphics.

I also had some issues with how the software was set up. This may be the result of not having had to buy a new laptop since 2008. The entire 1 terabyte hard drive was a single partition. I guess I'm old school but I have always put my data in partitions other than the one with the OS. There was also a whole lot of crapware included and it took a lot of effort to separate the necessary from the crap. Finally, if you need to reinstall the OS it must be done from a routine built into Acer's version of Windows stored on Acer's site. I didn't have a need to test it, but it seems to me that if your OS goes belly up you would have a hard time doing a recovery or reinstall. Also, if your data isn't backed up in a cloud somewhere, it's gone.

In conclusion, I would not buy this machine to be a mission critical laptop. Acer had so many good ideas for this laptop and executed them so poorly.
