ZEN and SmartThings - a proper pairing.

I purchased the ZEN Thermostat to integrate into my SmartThings network to manage my heating system after already having a ZWave Honeywell thermostat already installed with my A/C system six months prior. I did a lot of research within the SmartThings community and on Amazon and was confident the ZEN would deliver; but I was pleasantly surprised by not only the design but the ease of installation. There is no question that if you're considering both the Honeywell and ZEN, don't hesitate to purchase the ZEN. First off, the out-of-box experience is superb with a link to their online site to help guide you through the installation process, the site is mobile-friendly so you can easily use their online guide from your mobile phone which is handy installing the wiring. They have lots of visual guides within the online guide and they make it impossible to mess up regardless of your skill level. Plus, you can take a picture of the old thermostat wiring while you have your phone in your hand to refer back to.

From identifying what type of HVAC system you have to wiring the thermostat, it was easy and surprisingly quick. I spent more time patching and painting the wall behind and around the new ZEN beauty than the installation itself. It paired immediately with the SmartThings hub and I was creating rules to manage the ZEN in no time. Now, the real reason you buy the ZEN is the design and it is even better looking in person than on Amazon or their own website (I bought the white one). The ZEN is slim and looks great on the wall, the LED lighting creates a really nice and intuitive interface; absolutely no learning curve whatsoever. If you have a SmartThings installation, the ZEN thermostat is a "no brainer" purchase.

Finally, don't worry about the Nest. You don't need the complication because your ST hub manages ZEN and the LED interface it much more elegant than the Nest...save your money.

Great with SmartThings.

This has worked very well in conjunction with our SmartThings hub (note that you have to have a SmartThings-type controller with this thermostat to do any scheduling, it cannot be programmed by itself). It's nice to be able to start heating the house when activity is sensed in the morning, reduce the setpoint when the system senses people have left, and move to a 'night' mode when activity ceases in the evening.

I looked at other options, but this was one of the few that could operate without the 'C' wire from the HVAC system.

The user interface in SmartThings could be improved, but that has nothing to do with the ZEN hardware.

Simplicity

So simple, so beautiful. We bought the Zen thermostat to integrate with the SmartThings Home Automation system. It works perfectly. Our furnace did not have a c-wire, which is used to provide power to a more intelligent thermostat. The Zen allowed us to continue with our plans to create our smart home, as this thermostat is battery operated, and it has been reported that the batteries can last as long as two years. The Zen will also be suited and ready if and when we decide to upgrade our HVAC system; it works and configures to many home heating and air conditioning schemes.

Basic functions and a pretty face with a few small gripes.

If you are looking for a smart thermostat that is simple to install, with basic functionality, then this is your device. Personally, I was hoping for a little more but I can't really fault the company, too much. The functions I desired are available. I simply had to do a little research on how to access them and take a few trips into the advanced menu. Between the robust SmartThings community and the amazing, AMAZING, Zen customer service, I was able to dial in the Zen according to my needs. For the average user, I would rate the Zen an easy four stars with one more added for amazing customer service. From an enthusiasts perspective, I would dock one star for the amount of work it took to enable what I would consider a basic feature (auto mode with adjustable cooling and heating setpoints).

I had one little issue and emailed them on a weekend night ( Thought it was off hours) . With in moments I got an email back and was aided with some setting. Great Support.. Connects to Smart things and even to my Echo ... I am quite happy with my 2 Zen thermostats. Technical support was fast and responded to my emails within 15 or 20 minutes. I had a couple of clarification questions regarding wiring and configuration setting. Tech support helped me quickly and correctly.

I have both Zens connected to my Smartthings hub without issue. I use the regular routines to set temperature. There are apps available to allow use of a remote temperature sensor but I haven't played with those ... Yet.

Unit was a little confusing to setup until I actually read the instructions and used the website to find the proper settings codes. Unit is very simple and sleek. It just disappears on the wall. This unit replaced a Nest 2.0 which was pretty awesome, but it just could not manage to operate a geothermal heat pump correctly.
