I have used Version 1 of the MX Anywhere for over three years, for an average of 45 hours a week. I sincerely believe that the MX Anywhere 1 was the best mouse at any price for laptop users. So naturally, I jumped on the refreshed MX Anywhere 2. Here is my guide to whether the upgrade is worth your hard-earned dollars.

Warranty: The warranty on this mouse is incredibly important. The biggest problem that I (and many other users) had with V1 of this mouse was that the left click—either double click, or click and drag—would mysteriously stop working after a certain period of time. This was typically around the 12-18 month mark, based on my own experiences and those of my coworkers with the same device. That said, the V1 had a 3-year warranty and Logitech Customer Service was great at sending the two replacements that I have needed over the past three years. The V2 coincidentally has a truncated 1-year warranty. Will the left click have issues on V2 of the product? Time will tell and I will update this review if that time comes.

Scroll: The biggest selling point of the MX Master was the smart speed-adaptive scroll wheel that would intelligently switch between click-by-click and smooth scroll. Sorry, despite the similar styling, the MX Anywhere V2 does not have that feature. It retains the switching mechanism of the V1 mouse: press down on the scroll wheel to switch between the two modes. It’s a bummer—but it’s still the best scroll mechanism on any portable mouse to date.

Connectivity: V2 adds Bluetooth connectivity so that the mouse may be paired with up to 3 devices (laptop, tablet, PC). You’ll know whether this is important to you.

I bought the MX2 as a replacement for my original that I destroyed (after it started the dreaded double click syndrome, the solder pads came off when I attempted to replace the switch). I had high hopes, but ultimately returned it because of usability issues with the scroll wheel. The wheel is a lot lighter than the original MX I had, and ends up scrolling by itself - either as inertia even after you stop the wheel and let go, or when you jerk the mouse around it ends up turning by itself. This results in very annoying behavior (scrolled pages, zooming in/out, etc). I know you can set it to click-scroll instead of free-scrolling, but I never had this problem with the original version and this behavior is simply unacceptable. Google for "logitech mx scroll wheel problem" and the first youtube result is similar to what I was experiencing.

Other issues to consider:
- The original MX came out of the box opening new browser windows with a middle click, but you will need to program it for the MX2 by downloading the Logitech Options software.
- Keep in mind you need BT4.0 or Bluetooth Smart if you want to connect without the dongle. I have a mid-2011 iMac and it won't work without the dongle. Which makes the ability to "connect" to multiple computers pointless, unless your other devices have Bluetooth Smart
- The power switch on the bottom is as small as this @, recessed and you need to stick your nail in to move the switch. The original style power button requires zero brain cells to activate after a long day of powering through work, you just flick it with your thumb.
- The old version has very nice travel bag that comes with it. This has none.
- The old version has a 3 year warranty. The MX2 only has a one year warranty.

I am a big fan of the first generation of MX Anywhere. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
1./ Lightweight
2./ many connectivity options
3./ Chargeable batteries
4./ Miniature adapter that fits in any laptop cover

Cons:
Logitech took away two of my favorite features of the MX Anywhere:
1./ The travel pouch
2./ Storage for the USB adapter for travel. however, this is not a big concern because the adapter is really small.

Overall, it is a great update, but for the price, it would have been better with a pouch.

I have an old MX anywhere for more than 5 years and it is still running. I did a lot of modifications to improve its usability: I mounted USB transceiver inside laptop so there's no dongle sticks out. I added a DC-DC board inside the mouse so it can use two 3.7V 14500 Lithium ion batteries and last longer. All these are the design defects of the original MX anywhere: aged power management, dedicated USB transceiver. This new MX anywhere 2 finally fixed all those outstanding issues.

MX anywhere 2 is mechanically identical to the old MX anywhere: Same geometry, same button layout, same scroll wheel, and same glass surface tracking. Everything is identical to MX anywhere so you can easily transfer your old experience without noticing any hardware changes.

MX anywhere 2 finally uses Lithium ion battery. MX anywere 2's Lithium battery lasts little shorter than the old version with two Alkaline batteries (Typically 1 month). Due to the easy availability of micro USB cable, this shortage is not a noticeable issue.

MX anywhere 2 uses traditional 2.4GHz RF transceiver or BTLE (They call it Bluetooth Smart). I uses BTLE pairing with Linux (Fedora 22) and WIndows 7 (on a ThinkCentre with Intel driver) instantly. However, when pairing with a Windows 8.1 laptop, it complains no driver found at first. The issue fixed after installing "Logitech Options". All three systems can instantly pair MX anywhere 2 every time after boot up. But not at BIOS level. If you want to operate newer graphic UEFI you have to use 2.4GHz RF transceiver.

MX anywhere 2 can pair up to 3 devices, this is very similar to K810 keyboard. But switching between devices and pairing are much smoother than K810. I can easily switch from one machine to another by simply pressing the button.
