Fast and hard is the impression this left. The protagonists are tough and, in many ways, brutal, but still products of modern American society-slavery, molestation, murder are anathema. They feel real to this Iraq veteran, which is no small accomplishment. They will probably disturb naive readers, so be wary.
The plot is moderately twisty, though paced slowly enough to keep up.
The editing is poor. Proofreading is an issue, though it certainly went through a spelling checker. More problematic is layout and page organization; weeks are skipped in simple paragraph breaks, rather than typical section breaks. This made for many jarring transitions.

I'm not sure who to recommend this for. If you are a veteran and a gamer then it will probably be enjoyable. If you know a vet that games then you may find this insightful. For everyone else, this could be traumatic. Definitely use the free sample on this piece.

Deft, realistic fantasy action - thought provoking and entertaining

This book is in the grand tradition of "A Connecticut Yankee..." i.e. a person or group is transported to an alternate world, and through use of their skills and knowledge bring about a positive conclusion. What makes it special is RW Krpoun's clear familiarity with military and law enforcement. He posits that training and mental toughness are the assets that matter most in a dangerous, unfamiliar situation. What really stood out for me reading the book was his deft dialogue and the realism with which he approaches and imagines battles in a fantasy universe. Many authors skip over these elements, so that when a normal person defeats a dragon rather than soiling themselves in fear, the reader feels a disconnect. This book is filled with characters who are filled with realistic fear, and they react to it in ways that are very human. Further, Krpoun studiously avoids making his protagonists into "heroes" preferring instead to make them genuine.

To sum up, I am now going to buy and read his other books - what more can a reader say?

Pretty good fast paced story . 4 combat troopers get transported into a role playing world with their memories and knowledge intact. Add class specific abilities, a boatload of fantasy albeit with a very dark edge (it's not a pretty world ) and lots of intrigue. Wish it would have lasted longer and the ending seemed a bit rushed. Could have made this a trilogy and I would have bought all 3 books - so yeah well worth buying and reading.

Overall a very good read, really enjoyed this story. The idea, plot and characters are well done and the dialog seems to mature as the story goes on. Towards the end I found myself both laughing and empathising with the characters. Always a good sign. Some have commented on the harsh nature of some of the dialog related to modern wars. I found it real and refreshing - right or wrong, this is how people who have experienced those situations actually talk and think. Looking at Mr Krpoun's backround, he should know. Some of it reminds me of the dialogs in Dan Abnett's Inquisitor or Ghosts series - raw, gritty and real. And that is very high praise indeed, well done Mr Krpoun and thank you for the adventure!

I really enjoyed this book. There are aspects that are rough. Some of the characters blend together (which gets better in book 2). The ending is rushed and the pacing completely changes towards the end. However, for a LitRPG fan, this is a great read.

This book is unique in litrpg . Not so much RPG as fantasy but still solid and unique definitely a good solid read . Only dislike worth mentioning is the dragon..... How can you see a dragon in The Great Field and not loot it!!!!!!? That's a travesty blasphemous even but other than that good read .
