Joanna Penn has a knack for covering a wide berth of information in clear and concise ways. This book covers the various ways writers can make a living through their craft. If you are new to the idea of making a living through writing or to the writing industry in general, this is a perfect guide for you. However, if you already know your publishing options and other ways to create income streams through writing, reading this book may be a good refresher, but I would advise going straight to BUSINESS FOR AUTHORS.

A little book with a lot of helpful content.

There are so many 'How To' books on self-publishing and how to profit from your labor that it can get all very confusing and overwhelming. It's quite the jungle from which you can easily get lost in. I have read my fair share in this particular genre and my head is usually spinning ala Exorcism style rather than being enlightened. At the crux of it is understanding the *fundamentals* of the self-publishing world and the clarity of the content.

With this brief primer, Joanna Penn breaks it down in a bullet by bullet point many aspects of the self-publishing world but more importantly advice for writers to keep focused and motivated, creating a battle plan on productivity and making a profit, as we'll as helping the newbie in how to navigate the multiple social platforms to maximize exposure and marketing yourself as much as your work. She provides excellent Note Benas on topics I would have never considered: like the legalities of self-publishing, audiobooks, blogging, the pros/cons of being picked up by an agent and ebooks vs traditional publishing--and everything in between. She provides many useful resources that are free on her website and references she utilizes as a fiction author herself.

This book, however, does not provide HOW to write a novel. Instead, I would recommend K. M. Weiland's books on how to structure, write, plot, etc, your books. I religiously visit her very, VERY wonderful site [...]
If you're serious about being a writer and not dreaming of becoming one--and Ms. Penn is quite serious in helping you become a published author--this is a MUST READ. ***And it's F-R-E-E!*** As I said above, this is a very SHORT introduction and does not intimately delve into the specifics. It's more of a foundation book. Those that have been reading self-help guides on self-publishign and marketing, this book will seem very basic. But that's the point. It is a great starting point if you don't want to be quickly confused or overwrought from the bombardment of information. From this novel, you can start venturing to other self-help books on publishing. I would highly recommend her other books, visiting [...]and follow her twitter page for daily free advice and useful links. Ms. Penn is a vital resource for me and it should be for you. Her books will become your Self-Publishing Bible, I guarantee it.

If you've read How To Market A Book by Joanna Penn, you've basically read this book. A few helpful tips, but after reading her website and her other books, wasn't worth my time. Get it if you want to try Joanna Penn out without financial commitment

This book went into detail the steps you could take to make a living as a writer such as being a speaker at conferences, selling merchandise, ghostwriting, and more. Unfortunately for me, I want to concentrate on writing books and not so much being an entrepreneur. I did like this book. It had a lot of information in it on how to build your business. I have a holy fear of speeches, lol and don’t think I’d be much use up on stage. The merchandising I could see, if your book took off.
I’m still trying to piece together what to do with my writing. Some days, I’m definitely on the traditional side, others, I’m curious about self-publishing. It depends on what my options are. While I continue to figure that out, I’ll learn as much as I can from other writers.

Johanna Penn has already written several books about writing, and authoring. So, it’s not surprising that her latest release ‘How to Make a Living with Your Writing’ is another indispensable addition to your [digital] bookshelf – if you want to be a successful writer.

Joanna describes not only her own journey as a writer from scratch, but she tells her story in a very easy to read and pleasing manner. This book is more than just her journey as a writer. Following her own steps is like an instruction on how to do it yourself. Especially aspiring authors can take her experience as a guideline, and as steppingstones to make it through the mass of [nowadays] available options.

Her own journey helps writers to prevent costly mistakes, and to have a chance to be heard [or read] in today’s never ending flow of released books. Joanna is straight forward and honest. She tells you how it is, and the cards are on the table. She literally throws the ball in your field, showing you what it takes to be an author and entrepreneur. I strong recommend this book to anybody in the writing field, and give it five stars.

Joanna doesn't say it's easy but she does spell out what has and hasn't worked for her and what she has learned along the way. Clear, concise and chocked full of information, this book provides honest insight into what it takes to be an author entrepreneur.
