This new Trivium album has been quite a shock to me as a fan of every previous album of theirs. It is definitely not what I was expecting from the new album, but, after listening through it 5 times (in the first day, yes...I have no life) I have concluded that it actually is a pretty good overall album. However, to those who are hardcore on screaming, this may not quite be your "cup of tea". There is not a single scream in this album, which, to be honest, surprised me and disappointed me a bit. With that being said though Matt's (the singer) voice is absolutely beautiful and his vibrato....ahhh GOD!!! So GOOD!!! Also, the instrumentals....Holy crap...The bass and drum parts are insane and HEAVY...If you ever decide to do a cover you'd best be sure your drummer didn't skip out on leg day (bass drum-a-paloza), however, the guitars are kind of simple for Trivium (who is known for some insane guitar parts).
While the instrumentals and Matt's voice are all amazing there seems to be something missing from a couple parts in some songs but in "Until The World Goes Cold" (my least favorite song) mainly. I think a scream or two would really add something but it feels to me like it's too technically and melodically simple. Now I'm alright with a simple song, but I think if a song is going to be technically simple it should be very melodically difficult and vice versa (just my opinion).
Song List and Opinions:
1. Snofall: (6/10)-It's an instrumental...not much to it...it's kind of bland and just ehhh.
2. Silence In The Snow: (7/10)-The song everyone knows. Great bass part and something to headbang to. To me it seems a little uninspired and like it was just thrown together. Not a bad song overall.
3. Blind Leading The Blind: (8/10)- Pretty good song. Again a song everyone knows. Pretty good overall.
4. Dead And Gone: (8/10)-Matt gets close to screaming in this one. I know he wants to...JUST DO IT!!!! Not a bad song...this one feels very inspired to me and like he's pissed at something. Good song!
5. The Ghost That's Haunting You: (9/10)- 3 way tie for my favorite song (NOTHING IS ALLOWED A PERFECT SCORE...EVER!!!). It's overall a great song. I love the background vocals and drums. Very interesting story to this song as well.
6. Pull Me From The Void: (8.5/10)- Again, a great song. The drum part during the chorus is really catchy. Great song and lyrics.
7. Until The World Goes Cold: (6/10)- Ehhh....Least favorite song of the album. Seems uninspired to me and like it doesn't belong and was kind of just thrown in there last minute to add an extra song to the album.
8. Rise Above The Tides: (8/10)- Just a solid song. Nothing to complain about here.
9. The Thing That's Killing Me: (9/10)- 3 way tie for my favorite song. The first time Matt's cussed in a song for a long time. But it seems to fit and not be just used to say it. A great song and the chorus is extremely catchy.
10. Beneath The Sun: (8/10)- Another solid song. Great to listen to and nothing really to complain about.
11. Breath In The Flames (8/10)- Seems to be many people's favorite song. To me it's good, but not my favorite. The parts are all very interesting and same with the vocals.
12. Cease All Your Fire: (8/10)- Good song. Very similar message to some of their previous songs.
13. The Darkness Of My Mind (9/10)- 3 way tie for my favorite song. I don't know what I love about this song...It's just awesome. LISTEN TO IT!!!
OVERALL OPINION:
I do believe that Silence In The Snow is a good album and I recommend purchasing it. However, to anyone looking for a more hardcore and inspiring album by Trivium you may want to instead check out Ascendancy or Shogun.
It's not their best nor is it their worst.
As I’ve come to expect from Trivium, the production is clean and bright, without very much bottom end (Gregoletto’s bass lines have typically been very hard to find, but he definitely comes through better on this offering). The guitar playing is fantastic throughout, with both Matt and Corey being fairly straight-ahead players without much need for effects, beyond the occasional wah for leads. Matt tends to pre-write his leads with more melodic sense, and Corey is the flash-man, typically playing some very fast runs, with occasional whammy bar workouts.
Heafy’s vocals are strong and clear, featuring more actual singing than ever before, and harkening back to classic metal vocals, without getting up into nut-squeezing territory, like Tate, Halford, Dickinson, or the eversqueezed Michael Kiske from Helloween. I’d have to listen back again to be sure, but from memory, there are no screamo vocals to be found anywhere on this disc, which is very much a departure for the band – earlier records (pre-Crusade) were almost completely screamed, while later records featured more of a balance, with Heafy and Beaulieu trading lines frequently.
As such, this is a record that does not sound especially angry at all. While they’ve never seemed angry live, with Heafy routinely doing goofy faces and sporting an enormous smile letting you know how much he loves what he does, the albums have always had a darkened edge to them that’s absent here. It will take a few more listens to see if I really like that.
The songs are well-crafted, drawing from a vast and diverse musical history, with the opening riff of “Silence” bearing tribute to the mighty classic, “Holy Diver.” In fact, I’d say in some places, Dio also serves as a definite vocal influence. After verses of mostly bass and drums, the song goes in nice directions – again, these guys really know how to craft a great song, and that’s well on display here. New drummer Madiro places some nice, tasty fills in here and there, without overdoing it, and brings back something I was missing in recent albums.
There’s no shortage of heavy, fast riffing, and tasty double-bass drumming to please the thrash fans, though the more upbeat feeling coming from the vocal delivery might alienate some older, long-time fans, they’re sure to gain many more with each cut they release from this turn. Vengeance Falls was by go-to album of 2014, despite coming out in 2013, almost exactly two years ago, in fact. In all likelihood, this album will be my go-to for the remainder of 2015, and into 2016.
This may not be the heaviest album Trivium has put out, but it’s interesting, diverse, well-produced and solidly performed. Trivium put on a stellar show, super-tight and energetic, and they really deliver. They’re also a band with a strong reputation for appreciating and interacting with their fans (names above lead to Twitter handles, where known), so check them out if you’re out and about or looking for new metal. They just may be the hardest working band in metal, right now, and it shows.
