How did you come up with the idea for this product?

After a visit to the Apple Genius Bar with a full hard drive, I simply needed a way to store more digital files. As someone who uses my MacBook everyday, this solution needed to work without requiring me lug around extra bulk or delete my existing files and programs. I could not accept the "official answer", that there was no easy way to upgrade the hard drive in a MacBook.

The best option for expanding Macbook storage

Simply put, if you need to expand the storage on your Apple laptop this is the best option. I made the mistake of choosing 128Gb for my Macbook Pro last year, so I was running low on storage in no time. I was looking into buying a 256Gb SSD on eBay to replace the current one, but the pricing was ridiculous and the idea of voiding my warranty to add storage wasn't very appealing. I searched forever for a good solution, and I landed on Tardisk. I am glad that I did. I decided to go with the 128Gb model to double the storage in my laptop.

The quality of the hardware seems high; the product seems like it is built to last forever. The instructions were clear and the installation process was straightforward and quick (less than 15 minutes). Because of how the product's software works (it basically uses the Tardisk and the laptop's SSD to create a single Logical volume just like Apple's fusion drive), real world performance and benchmark numbers are pretty much identical to the SSD alone. This is because it keeps your system files as well as commonly used Apps and files on the faster SSD, while infrequently used files are moved to the slower Tardisk storage. So while the read and write speeds of the Tardisk itself may be low when benchmarked, when combined with your SSD, the difference is practically imperceivable to the user, and performance will be the same 99% of the time. All you really see is the expanded storage! Just make sure you are ordering the model that includes the Pear software.

The only real trade off is that the SD card reader becomes unusable, but this probably isn't an issue for most people. If it is, a $10 card reader will do the trick.

I have been more than impressed with the Tardisk and Pear software, and I recommend it highly. The price might seem a little bit steep for the amount of storage you get, but the seamless experience that Pear provides is well worth the investment.

Double the memory

Had a little bit of issues getting it to sync but as soon as I emptied some space on the original HD, no problem with the install. Easy instructions and HD now is double the original. Another option if you don't want to replace your original HD.

I found TarDisk through an extensive search for the lightest storage upgrade. The Tardisk slides into the SD Card Slot flush, and it's very compact inside of there, so tight that I had trouble taking it out of the slot without a guitar pick which they included in my order for apparently obviously reason. With TarDisk I am able to store more video files onto my MacBook. Which is great because as a videographer I tend to be doing this a lot!

Some things to consider before initially installing TarDisk:

* Turn Off File Vault (If it's on, & you can always turn it back on following installation).
* Create a Time Machine Backup (As stated in the video, I highly recommend you backup your device regularly on an external device).
* TarDisk is meant to stay inside your MacBook at all times. However you can deinstall their software at anytime using a step by step guide on their Website FAQ, support is super helpful so ask them if you need any assistance.

That said, Tardisk was a great solution for expanding my storage. I haven't had any issues for the first 2 weeks that I've been using my TarDisk. My only other advice is to make sure you have the latest version of MacOS. Also Bootcamp doesn't really like Tardisk but using a virtualization machines like Parallels Desktop is a great alternative and it runs windows just as fast. Hope you guys enjoyed this video review. This is an update - Aug 30, 2016

I had to contact TarDisk because of some issues with my MacBook Air/TarDisk system. The customer service support/representative I have worked with is Tony Ortiz. He has been excellent - knowledgeable, responsive and very very helpful. I ended up going to the Apple store and the guy at the Genius Bar said 'Oh, I'm looking at buy one of those TarDisks'. After examining my system he said it was a software issue and reinstalled the OS - it was not a TarDisk issue.

I cannot tell you how impressed I've been with Tony and TarDisk for his/their responsiveness and attention to detail. (my background - 20 years in quality assurance for a Fortune 500 company and Tony is the best. I've never met the guy but he does have customer issues as a top priority).

Great product and OUTSTANDING service. Thanks Tony!!

Recently Adam from TarDisk contacted me regarding the problems I had with my original TarDisk and my posted negative feedback. I had received a refund from Amazon so in a sense issue had been addressed. However, he/TarDisk wanted to be sure I knew that they had addressed the quality issues which were raised in my negative feedback. They offered to send me a new TarDisk at no charge if I would review it and update my posted comments. My choice was to order one from Amazon, pay for it myself and then if the product quality had changed upgrade my review.

The current product has top notch quality - see the attached photo of the TarDisk just received. The installation directions are detailed and clear. Product performance is as advertised. In addition Pear now comes standard with all TarDisks.

I was disappointed with this product because (1) it was not clear that purchasing it through/from Amazon meant it would not have Pear and (2) the quality of the aluminum case was poor; it had sharp edges, see attached photo. The attention to production detail was not present.
