Product Description
St. Cuthberts Mill, in Wells England, has been producing exquisite artist papers made from the highest quality raw material since the 1700s. Known for crafting the finest art paper, the mill uses only the purest raw ingredients to guarantee the highest grade of archival papers. Our pulps and cotton linters are specially sourced for their quality, and woolen felts are used to ensure unique surface textures, making St. Cuthberts the preferred paper of artists worldwide. The Saunders Waterford Series, made by St. Cuthberts, is an exceptional quality watercolor paper, traditionally made on a cylinder mold machine. Our papermaking artisans use 100% cotton, the ideal papermaking material, to craft this incredible paper to high archival standards with magnificent surface stability. Buffered with calcium carbonate for added protection, it has a beautiful surface created using natural woolen felts that give it a distinctive random texture. The surface is sized in gelatin, which eases paint flow from brush to paper and creates a lasting durability when it comes to scrubbing, erasing and other rough treatments. Even masking fluid removal is easy with this paper. Saunders Waterford white watercolor blocks are available in three surface textures: hot press, cold press and rough. Broaden your horizons and take this watercolor block along on your travels for plein air painting. Painting on the block allows for quick set up wherever you find yourself when inspiration strikes. Every block is fastened securely on all four sides with a pH neutral, black adhesive that prevents warping or buckling and holds steady in rain, wind or shine. Equipped with a sturdy, protective cover sheet you can utilize every rich sheet on the block. Endorsed by the Royal Watercolor Society, you can trust this premium watercolor paper. When it comes to choosing top tier products for your artistic arsenal, be sure to include Saunders Waterford from St. Cuthberts Mill.

After reading some positive reviews on YouTube and Instagram, and finding the 20 sheet block of Saunders Waterford cold press at a considerably lower price than Arches and Fabriano, I decided to give Saunders Waterford a try.
The first drawing I tried painting on this paper were three parrot tulips (I have attached the painting) I felt there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t deposit the paint with my usually fluidity and ease…I actually thought I was loosing my painting skills because I couldn’t make the paint flow and spread the way it usually does on my other watercolor papers. I used the same Daniel Smith watercolor paints I always use.
This painting took me twice as long to complete because the paper was very difficult to work with. Right from the start I knew there was something wrong with the paper. After finishing the painting I tried painting a couple of other paintings but ended up throwing them away because the paint just sat on the surface of the paper without spreading or moving ruining the paintings. I went back to use Arches and had absolutely no problem with that paper.
For comparison purposes I’ve attached the three parrot tulip painting I did on Saunders a Waterford paper, and a Dahlia flower painting on Arches HP watercolor paper with Daniel Smith watercolor paints…the richness and vibrancy on the Arches paper is visible.
I DO NOT recommend this watercolor paper, it acts like wood pulp instead of 100% cotton.
