Night Things: Dracula versus Frankenstein (The Night Things Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 54 ratings

Author's Note 01/23: This is a newly edited and polished version of Night Things: Dracula vs Frankenstein. It also sports a new cover.

"Night Things won’t disappoint. It’s pure fun for those of us whose love of monsters from legend and the screen runs deep."-Jonathan Reitan, Scream the Horror Magazine

In a centuries-spanning tale, iconic literary monsters Dracula and Frankenstein, once close as brothers, now sworn enemies, clash in a final showdown beneath New York City. Set in a world much like ours, with a chilling twist—legendary creatures coexist with humans—the macabre melting pot of New York sees vampires, werewolves, zombies, and ghouls pursuing the American dream. Dracula, hailed as the Night Things' messiah, amasses an unstoppable army to eradicate humanity. Meanwhile, New York crime boss Johnny Stücke, Frankenstein's creation, strives to maintain peace, fearing extinction if Dracula unleashes his forces. Terry M. West, acclaimed horror author, delivers a standalone Night Things novel, revealing a world just slightly darker than our own.

Night Things - Dracula vs Frankenstein
This is an excellent, fast-paced story that pits horror's two top monsters against each other while exposing the seedy, gritty underbelly of the big city. I enjoy the novelette sized story, it’s long enough to get into the characters, but it’s still lean and doesn’t stray from the core of the tale. Great reading for the horror fan that likes some gritty reality in their stories and a modern twist on familiar monsters. While we have the main bout between Dracula and Frankenstein, we also get zombies, werewolves, a mummy, and all forms of night creatures battling both humans and each other in this action packed reimagining of the classic monsters.
Our beloved monsters are given new life, meaning and motivation by the skilled pen of Mr. West in this story. It's a complex interwoven tale that reveals different story lines from each of the main characters. If you are a monster movie fan, don't miss this...it's a great read! I just wish it would be adapted into a movie too!

I thought this was a very unique take on the old monster classics. It was a well written, fast paced story about Dracula and Frankenstein battling it out in a modern day New York underground mafia type setting. The characters felt real. And you could actually feel empathy for the bad guys. One of my favorite parts was the actual physical fight between Dracula and Frankenstein. It wasn't all "magic." I did love the ending. I feel that this should be included in everyone's group of monster stories.

This is my first book by Terry West and it won't be my last. This is tale of two monsters, Frankenstein and Dracula. The book is set in our time but there are flashbacks throughout the book that help with the storyline. I was totally hooked, who doesn't like Frankenstein? The book is fast paced, the characters are likeable and some aren't, but loaded with every monster you can think of, zombies, wolves mermen. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

    Plot

Imagine a world where vampires roam the streets. Where zombies can be cops. Where Frankenstein's monster is a mobster named Johnny Stucke. Where Dracula is gathering an army to wipe out all humans. That's the premise of Night Things. Where monsters roam and war is about to begin.

This is definitely NOT a Kim Harrison parallel. This is something a bit different. There's some humor, some graphic gore, a bit of sex, and a weird story all around.

    Characters

Johnny Stucke: mobster, Frankenstein's monster, smokes cigars

Gary Hack: drug addict, adult film director, bald, trimmed beard, has a daughter, divorced, overweight

Glass: black, muscular, works for Stucke

Zuzanna: Polish, adult film star, succubus

Dracula: uh, he's Dracula, what else do you need to know?

    Dialogue

Conversations don't linger on. Scenes are fairly short. Some voices come through.

    Writing

    Profanity.

The author throws in a lot of 'traditional' monster stuff. Garlic and silver and spells and burning of zombies. It's a short book, fast read. There was room to expand a bit more on the lore and the current situation. Basically, Dracula recruits the monster and there are flashbacks to their falling out. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the present day life. Maybe throw in some other humans unrelated to the main characters or with tenuous connections. Maybe a side plot. There was a lot to take in and though it was easy to follow, I was enjoying the concept. Maybe if the author continues with a series, he can explore the monster life. But for now, I took a chance and wasn't disappointed.

    My rank:

    Green Belt

Author Terry West has done it again breathing new life into old monsters. This is a classically structured story, and things move along at a brisk pace for a fast and fun read. Highly recommended!

Terry West's monstrous world grows deeper in the second installment of Night Things. Gary Hack finds himself dragged into a war that has been brewing for decades. On one side is his employer, Johnny Stücke. On the other, a powerful vampire bent on Stücke's destruction. The build up and payoff are flawless, the story being devoid of unnecessary fluff. Top it off with a visit from Dr. Herbert West, the reanimated himself, and this story is just too much fun to put down.

Overall, I enjoyed the read. The biggest difficulty I had was that it felt at times like a sequel, but I couldn't figure out to what.

I was a bit disappointed in the final chapter, and think the book would be stronger without it.
