Product description

Bilstein 5100 shocks utilize a monotube design, with a 46mm digressive piston, to increase road handling characteristics both on and off-road. The single tube body allows for rapid heat transfer between the shock oil to the shock body, and then dissipated further to reduce shock fade. German engineering combined with US manufacturing ensures optimum performance and longevity for upwards of 100k miles (real customer feedback!). The 5100 series is more compliant in tougher situations and off-road terrain compared to the 4600 series. Factory spec vehicles should use the 4600 series shocks as the valving is more appropriate for daily driven vehicles and pavement environments.

I've had Bilstein shocks on every vehicle I've owned and been satisfied, however, my recent purchase of four shocks for a Ford F350 SuperDuty has been very disappointing. Installed less than one month I went off pavement for a short 2 mile ride. The front shocks got hot enough to melt the protective covers and then completely failed, spraying shock oil. I called Bilstein and was told that these shocks are only a "cosmetic" upgrade and are not intended to be used off pavement. In their terms, the shocks had super-heated and failed. They did not honor the warranty (no refund, no exchange). I'm out over $300 since I just replaced all four shocks with something that is not a "cosmetic" upgrade but a durable and better than OEM replacement.

2011 F250 FX4 with 98K miles, still had original Rancho shocks that I thought were still okay, man was I wrong.
This is not an off road truck, stock height and tires. Absolute pavement pounder used to haul a 12K 5th wheel.
Pulled the old Ranchos and was shocked, no pun intended, to find that all four of them were completely inoperable! No pressure left inside them, zero rebound. Had only a slight amount of compression damping ability. Right front was the worst, it retracted by itself when I removed the nut holding it on at the top. Installed these four new Bilsteins (along with the matching steering dampner) and what a huge difference it made to the ride, the stability and the comfort. I have airbags so I guess that kind of masked how bad they really were. Do yourself a favor folks, spend the $300 and a couple of hours of time and you too will be shocked (pun fully intended) at how well your truck rides and how much quieter it is with these on there!

These shocks made a significant difference in the way my truck rides and handles. I have a 2015 F-250 and the original Rancho RS5000 shocks were worn at 60k miles. These shocks should have been original equipment on the FX4 edition trucks. The truck does ride a little stiffer but the rebound after hitting the bumps on I-75 at highway speeds is vastly improved. I installed these shocks myself. The rear shocks are very easy but the front is significantly more difficult due to how it is installed. They are able to be replaced with common hand tools. Word of caution, they are under pressure and collapsing the front shocks for hardware alignment was a bit of a challenge during the install as they did not come with a loom to keep them compressed like the aft ones did. The job would have been easier if I had collapsed the shock while not installed and secured it with string before installing. The string could be cut and removed after install is complete. My truck literally sits an inch or more higher now. The truck rides and handles better than new. I should have replaced the shocks and stabilizer with these years ago.

Improved my ride

These shocks really improved the ride of my 2016 Ford F350. The Rancho shocks had 40,000 miles and just weren't cutting it.

Installation was pretty easy. If you have a Ford, the following tools will make it a little easier: 18mm six point deep socket, 13/16" ratchet wrench for removing the nuts on top of the front shocks. 19mm ratchet wrench for installing the new nuts on the top of the front shocks.

A couple of minor complaints. The shaft of the new shocks spun during installation. So I had to slide the boot down to grasp the shaft with a pair of slip joint pliers to get the nut tight. The Rancho shocks had overcome this by having a nut at the top of the shaft that you could hold onto during assembly/disassembly. Also, the boots are pretty flimsy. I'll have to see how they hold up over the years.

I ordered these shocks to replace the ones on my 2006 f250 XLT which had the original rancho shocks and steering damper with over a hundred thirty thousand miles on them. These made a huge difference in the way the truck rides. They are very easy to install, and a big upgrade for anyone wanting have a better ride. I also ordered the steering damper which arrived first and that made a huge improvement on the steering and now the steering is smoothe and also the ride quality.

This review was written by my husband because well, I have no clue how to put shocks on a truck..lol And since I watched, there was no way, no how I could even begin to try to.

Arrived earlier than expected which was great because it gave me the weekend to get them put on.
I have a 2014 F350 SRW long bed (12,000 miles) and my daily commute consists of driving several miles on a concrete highway with a ton of expansion joints. As many others have experienced, I was bouncing so much that I felt my bones would rattle themselves apart. I couldn't even drink my coffee on the way to work without spilling it everywhere. The stock Rancho shocks were pure garbage.

I bought this set after seeing many people say it was a great improvement. To me, that is an understatement. It's like the difference between night and day with these on. Sure, it's not 100% smooth like a Cadillac, but there's such a huge improvement on the ride, it just makes me love my truck even more, not to mention I can now enjoy my coffee on the way to work. No more feeling like the bounce would make me wreck (yes, it was that bad).

I highly recommend that anyone with a Ford F250/F350 that has that wicked bounce, buy these. I doubt you will be disappointed.
