I recommend you practice using the pens on cardstock before diving into your art project. For the people who read reviews about these pens drying up quickly or gushing paint in a blob, my guess is that they do not understand how to use paint pens. They are constructed differently than ball point pens or gel pens. They have a hard nib that moves. First the pens need to be shaken for several MINUTES when they are new in order to thoroughly mix the paint. If the paint comes out watery, you didn't shake it long enough. The paint in these pens is definitely opaque. If shaken properly the light colors will completely cover dark shades with one coat. To start flow of the paint when pens are new, you have to press the nib against your table surface several times until the nib gets saturated with paint and starts the flow of paint. This usually only takes 3-5 times pressing down. Once you've used the pens you should rarely have to press the nibs that hard again. In fact once the nibs are saturated with paint; if you fully depress them again, that is when you are likely to get a blob. Once you have paint flow, you only need to occasionally depress the nib gently. I always keep an index card next to me on my table for the purpose of cleaning the nib or depressing the nib to adjust paint flow. If you get a blob while you are painting your project you are probably pressing down too hard while working on your project.
Remember the paint dries quickly. That is one of the great things about this product. However you have to be mindful that the paint dries quickly. If you are distracted by someone talking to you and you are not painting.... cover the pen. If your TV show becomes more interesting and you pause from working on your project for a MINUTE.... cover your pen. You will be happier with the product. While using the pens, especially if you use the same color for several minutes or even 20-30 minutes continuously; the paint on the sides of the nibs will start to dry up or get a little crusty and will obstruct paint flow. So whenever your paint flow becomes less than smooth flowing.... take a moment to shake the pen for 10-15 seconds and then use that handy index card or piece of cardstock and hold the pen as close to horizontal as possible with the nib against the cardstock. Then while keeping the nib in one spot, turn the nib firmly against the table, the intent is to scrape the dried paint off the side of the nib so the paint flows easily again. After scraping the dried paint off the sides of the nib, return to hold the pen vertically and GENTLY depress the nib 1-3 times slightly scribbling in between each depression to check paint flow. Reading this took longer than the actual process! I wish I could get my hands on the paint pens that people write about that they are not happy with..... because I feel certain that I could revive the pens. If you allow someone to use your pens who does not use them properly they can be revived after they seemingly "dry up" but if you don't have the patience to do this, then don't let children or careless adults use them unless you can teach them. I hope this helps you because these pens are fantastic and you can spread a lot of joy if you use them on your projects. If you want to see rocks I've painted with posca pens, check out Lynchburg VA Rocks on Facebook and search my name (Tracy Davis) I've bought the bright colors as well as these pastels. I also have posca metallic paint pens.

The only reason for one star off is that they don't have a whole lot of paint in them. I've already run out of two - and almost out of a third one - but I'm using the absolute crap outta them. But - they are very expensive. But - as I stated earlier - I think they are well worth it.

I wanted the bigger tips but it turns out I actually really like the 1M. If you're working small like a sketchbook or small canvas 1m is good, if you want to fill in large spaces go for a bigger size.
You need to shake them quite a few times before each use or the ink doesn't come out as opaque, but after being shaken they're fantastic. Tips are good, better than the small Ironlak and Molotow tips (and I'm a huuuge Molotow fan).
They write well on dark backgrounds too. Locally these pens go for about $6 each at my local art store so this is a great value. I would recommend getting a white one too.
