I have Verizon FiOS for TV and internet at home and for all you Verizon FiOS users, you know that the Actiontec wireless router provided is not exactly the best for strong wireless signals. I have an older model MI424WR-GEN2, so the best it can do is wireless-G. It does not have AC or even N. For years I had to deal with weak wireless signal throughout my house, especially in the bedroom which is located furthest from the router, two floors up and across the house from the router which is located in the basement. Additionally, where I live, there are a TON of other wireless installations in the area, all of which are competing with my wireless for signal strength. I could only get one bar of strength in the bedroom, even with the antenna on the router aimed correctly and with the best channel selected.

Enter this TP-LINK TL-WPA4220KIT Advanced powerline/wireless kit. This kit works by adding a second wireless access point to your house which you can place in an ideal location. It doesn't have to be anywhere near your router because it links back to your router via an ethernet-though-powerline connection. It sends its signal though your house wiring, so you don't have run ethernet cables throughout your home.

Setup can be a little tricky and if you're not a computer person, you may need to borrow or rent somebody who is. I have a Windows PC, so I cannot speak for Mac users. This is the installation in a nutshell for a Verizon FiOS user, since the Actiontec router does not have a working Wi-Fi Clone function. First, install the included software onto your computer. The "Powerline Utility" is used to locate and configure the the base unit. The "Powerline Scan" is used to locate and configure the wireless access point.

I have IP cameras and in a house with brick walls. Yes, we have an addition and the builders put up the wall around the outside brick.Signals bounce around and often putting in ethernet cable, which I could do, this sounded like the best thing . I had to play around with the syncing of the two transmitters with the main one, but it works. One thing to remember, You sync each of the stations with the main station(which needs a direct connect to your router/modem) and if you want to use the wireless, the units come with two cards with tiny print. One card is the password for one of the units, the other card for the other unit. Don't lose the cards. You also might want to change the default password to keep your mooching neighbors from bogging down your system. Yes, this is a winner

Wow, I can't believe this actually worked! I purchased this Powerline set in order to get internet in my art studio without having to run a cable through yet another conduit after we hooked up the electricity. The price was right, and although I didn't really expect it to work, I thought I'd take the chance. So glad I did! My studio has it's own breaker box, which is connected through a long line/conduit to another breaker box in the house. So, this Powerline device is working through not one, but two breaker boxes. It's working like a champ! I can stream video, download and upload large image files, and run wifi into the yard for playing music and allowing guests to access the guest network when we have cookouts and bonfires. The fact that it worked at all under the circumstances is impressive, but that it works with the same speed as devices hardwired to the router in the house is especially impressive! Highly recommend!

This is a very affordable and useful powerline networking adapter from TP-Link. It consists of two powerline ethernet devices - one that connects to a router, and another one that has two ethernet ports and a built in wireless access point.

When both are on the network the two port + wireless adapter will route all of its traffic through your home's electrical wiring to the other device. It works quite well and is an easy way to extend a network without having to run ethernet cable.

I have found that these devices are rarely a replacement for ethernet. In many ways they're better than wi-fi but I have never come close to getting the promised 500 megabit speed that this and other products tout. The reality for me is closer to 100 megabits and that is when the devices are connected to the same outlet.

In a real-world application the best I can pull down is about 30-40 megabits of sustained speed. That speed is more than adequate for web surfing but probably not as good for more demanding applications like Blu Ray media serving and other high bandwidth applications.

But on balance this is the best powerline kit I've reviewed. So if you're in the market for one this is certainly one worth considering.

DISCLOSURE: TP-Link sent me this product to review.

Recently we moved our entertainment center from the living room to the family room. We'd never had trouble getting the wireless internet signal to the satellite TV box in the past, but all of a sudden, we couldn't get a dependable signal. We tried various things but nothing worked. Then we got the opportunity to review this Wifi extender kit, and it looked like it would solve the challenge.

It's easy to set up. The instructions say to plug in an ethernet cable into your incoming modem -- we have a Frontier DSL modem. Plug the master Powerline unit into a nearby electrical outlet, and insert the cable in one of two available slots. Now plug the slave (the larger unit) into another electrical outlet on the same circuit (that is, in my case, another wall socket in my office -- same room). Press the "pair" button on the master, and when lights begin to flash on the unit, go to the slave and press the "pair" button. When the lights go steady again, they're mated.

I thought at that point this wasn't going to work as our entertainment center is maybe 50 feet away, through walls, in another part of the house. But reading further, I discovered that now the two devices were paired, I could move the slave to any outlet, anywhere in the house. I took it to the family room and plugged it into a wall socket near the TV. For even better connectivity, I used another enthernet cable from the slave directly into the back of the Directv box. Done. Now I have internet in the entertainment center.

By the way, don't plug the master or slave into a power bar etc. They say that won't work. Plug each directly into a wall socket.
