One man. Two women. A child desperate for medical treatment.
How can Kyle choose between the woman he once loved and his current fiancée? Is there a solution that suits all involved, or will someone end up out of the triangle forever? Morgan Calhoun and her parents are whisked away in the middle of the night, something Morgan always knew was a possibility because of her father's CIA job. But she'd always thought if such a scenario played out that she would have time to say goodbye to those she loved—particularly her boyfriend, Kyle. Adding to her unbearable situation, several weeks after the move, Morgan finds out that she's pregnant.
Kyle Brossmann doesn't even get a break-up letter from Morgan. She's just gone, along with her parents. His heart broken, Kyle continues with his plans. He graduates from high school and attends college, where he meets his fiancée, Lexie. But two men visit Kyle and encourage him to travel to an undisclosed location, where he will meet his five-year-old daughter. Rocked by the news that he has a child, Kyle learns he is the only person who might be able to save his daughter's life.
Will Kyle choose his first love and his daughter? Or will he stay with Lexie and live the life they’ve been planning?
Each Surf’s Up novella takes the reader to a beach locale, weaving romance and adventure into a soul-soothing journey of hope.

About the author

Beth Wiseman is the best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series and the Land of Canaan series. Having sold two million books, her novels have held spots on the ECPA (Evangelical Christian Publishers Association) Bestseller List and the CBA (Christian Book Association) Bestseller List. She was the recipient of the prestigious Carol Award in 2011 and 2013. She is a three-time winner of the Inspirational Readers Choice Award, and an INSPY Award winner. In 2013 she took home the coveted Holt Medallion. Her first book in the Land of Canaan series—Seek Me With All Your Heart—was selected as the 2011 Women of Faith Book of the Year. Beth is contracted with HarperCollins Christian Publishing into the year 2018, and she has published thirteen novels and thirteen novellas to date.
As a former newspaper reporter, Beth was honored by her peers with eleven journalism awards, including first place news writing for The Texas Press Association. She has been a humor columnist for The 1960 Sun in Houston and published articles in various publications. However, writing novels is where her heart is. She left her job as a journalist in 2008 to write novels fulltime.
Beth has a deep affection for the Amish and their simpler way of life, and while she plans to continue writing Amish love stories, she is also branching out into other areas. Her first non-Amish, contemporary—Need You Now—released in April 2012 and landed on the CBA Bestseller List. She enjoyed writing the story based in a town near where she lives, and she chose another small Texas town for her next non-Amish contemporary—The House that Love Built—which is based in Smithville, the same quaint town where movies such as Hope Floats and Tree of Life were filmed. Beth continued to spread her wings when she released The Promise in October 2014. Inspired by actual events, The Promise follows Beth’s characters all the way to Pakistan. Beth was involved in the real-life rescue when her friend was held captive in Pakistan. Beth is currently working on book #2 in her new Amish Secrets series, tentatively titled Jacob’s Ladder. Book #1—Her Brother’s Keeper—recently released and was chosen as a Top Pick by RT Reviews Magazine.
Beth and her husband are empty nesters enjoying the country life in Texas. When she’s not writing, she loves to travel, paint, and enjoy time with friends and family. Then comes the knock at Kyle’s apartment door. Two men give him news that leaves him stunned. He has a daughter who’s almost six, and she’s in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. And Kyle may be her only hope. Just as stunning is that the wo men are from the Central Intelligence Agency, and they tell Kyle he has to leave immediately. An email message will be sent to Lexie telling her not to worry.
Kyle flies with the men to California, but that’s not the final destination. Soon, he will meet Morgan and their daughter Emma. And he’ll face a choice: Morgan and Emma, or Lexie.
“Message in a Bottle,” a novella by Beth Wiseman, is the story of Kyle, Lexie, Morgan, and Emma. It’s a story of old love, new love, and a bit of mystery and intrigue thrown in.
Wiseman has written numerous Christian romance novels, under four series: The Daughters of Promise, Land of Canaan, Amish Secrets, and Amish Journeys. Several of her books have been bestsellers, and she’s received several awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the Christian Book Association. She lives in Texas.
The story strains credulity a bit, but “Message in a Bottle” is a well-written and engaging tale, with likeable characters caught in a dilemma not of their own making. It has to end well (romance stories don’t end badly), but Wisemen keeps the tension throughout regarding what Kyle will do.
Given ARC audio which added to this story narrated by Cecila White, for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Kyle has his life turned upside down with the surprise of learning he has a daughter and the secretive nature of getting to her.
I did enjoy the whole message in the bottle idea and how it played out in Kyle's life one last time.
The book also has an unexpected but interesting ending as well. I am glad that there is a look into the lives of everyone at a much later date.
I liked Kyle and Morgan but I was confused by whether they still loved each other or not. It seemed like they both still had feelings for each other but they were with other people. Morgan had Landon and Kyle had Lexi. The focus of the story was on Kyle and Morgan so you really didn't get to know too much about Landon or Lexi.
Morgan's family adopts a new identity and goes into hiding because her father is in the CIA and people are after him. This is the part of the storyline that didn't really make sense to me and it's never really explained. The end leaves the reader with more questions than answers about this particular storyline.
The author did keep me invested in the characters. I also liked that she added an epilogue which caught the reader up with all the characters several years later.
This novella is such a gem! Message in a Bottle is a story I enjoyed from beginning to end. Each chapter packs a punch with lovable characters, hidden surprises, tender scenes, and wonderful action that takes readers across an ocean and through some incredible personal decision making. The character development made this story shine for me, and I found myself asking, “What would I do?” It was fun to play that game with the characters of Kyle, Morgan, and Lexie.
This is a novella that I read over two days' time. I found myself turning the pages quickly because the story is so compelling, though there were times I sat back and savored the plot. I highly recommend this novella! I look forward to Book Three in the Surf's Up series, The Shell Collector's Daughter.
And if you haven’t read Book One, go get it now: A Tide Worth Turning.
The one thing that caused me to give it four stars instead of five is that it is a novella. With the limited number of pages, there was no room for thoroughly developed characters and storyline. If it had been longer, and had gone into more details in the story and if the characters had been more developed, I would have given it five stars.
