For reference, I've got an Intel HD Graphics 620 and a dual core i7. It can do 4K through the internal HDMI port, but I needed to connect two 4K screens instead of just one. It works for that purpose. Also should mention that the unit gets hot.
I downloaded the display link drivers on both my 15" and 13" MacBooks and so far it's working like a charm on both.
Mainly, I have a laptops that are a couple of years old now running dual monitors perfectly well enough for work. And an older 13" macbook that can now drive 4k. Still need to check the speeds while running native 4k out with a second 4k over usb, but so far so good. One of the best purchases I've made in ages.
4k AOC monitors btw are pretty damn good also.
Update : I did notice after using it now for a week, that occasionally Grey colours in the top bar of an application window are lagging a bit. Does not bother me .... just mentioning it. ( connected via USB2.0)
This is my review for the Diamond USB 3.0 4K multi-display adapter, model BVU5500H installed on Mac OS.
Works perfect. I have a 2011 MBP (macOS High Sierra) setup with two LG 32-Inch IPS monitors. One monitor via the display port ( Mini DP to DP Cable ) and the other monitor connect via the USB 2.0 port ( using the BVU5500H )
I have tested and installed the BVU5500H successfully on :
2008 iMac via USB 2.0 (OSX El Capitan)
2016 MBP via USB 3.0 (macOs Sierra)
2011 MBP via USB 2.0 (macOS High Sierra).
I have not seen any noticeable 'lagging".
Few thing to help you with the setup :
1) You need to download the latest driver as it only comes with the Windows drivers from displaylink
2) As for installing and connecting the BVU5500H on a machine running "macOS High Sierra" read a support article on Displaylink's knowledge base articles about "macos-high-sierra-video-functionality-not-enabled"
Hope this helps.
The install process took only a few minutes. Plug the adapter in, go to the DisplayLink website to download the Mac OS drivers, install drivers, restart computer, done.
The third monitor works fine for what I need it for (computer programming), but I probably wouldn't recommend it for high-end graphic editing, video editing, or hardcore gaming. There are a few anomalies between the native monitors and the monitor run through the adapter. The refresh is slightly slower, the colors for the monitor on the adapter don't match perfect with the monitor hooked directly to the mini-DP on the Mac Mini, and there are some slowdowns or artifacts when the adapter renders certain transparencies.
Other than that, good to go.
Very satisfied with the performance of this product. I am using this on an old ASUS K55A laptop running Ubuntu 16.04. Downloaded the latest drivers from the DisplayLink website. I tested this with a 2560 x 1440 monitor. It was able to render a youtube video full screen. Some things to consider...
- The adapter does get warm, but not hot.
- CPU usage averages 20-30%, but can get reach 80% every now and then.
- Interferes with a Bluetooth adapter if it is plugged in next to the Diamond adapter.
Despite these shortcomings, it worked very well and brought new life to my laptop with its limited 1920x1200 ext. resolution.
While it generally worked well, I was quite annoyed by the device occasionally wigging out, going offline momentarily, and coming back on line. The screen would blank then come back, as though the USB connection was lost and Windows had to rediscover it. At one point, I updated all display-related and USB drivers for my laptop and the dropouts seemed to go away for a while, but that might have been an illusion because the dropouts started happening again.
I noticed that it was always warmer than I would expect for such a device, which probably explains its short life.
Top reviews from other countries
HDCP compliant. iTunes purchased videos run without any difference to any of the other monitors. Sound and image in sync in the few HD movies tested.
After 1 week of use, the only minor issue is when PC returns from sleep mode, all programs restart on the main screen and need to be separated manually. At first, after restarts, the USB device had to be unplugged to get the USB screen functioning, but has not been the case since the first few startups. Everything works automatically since.
Since the monitor does not attach to the video card, adjusting brightness and other characteristics must be done manually, not a problem just an inconvenience.
Overall I am very satisfied with this USB device.
