Works great, heed the warnings not to run without a short arc or load, don't run for longer than a minute without cooldown.

I put this on two C cells, so 3V. It puts out a bright arc.

I also connected a B&K HV-40 high voltage probe to it. The resistance of a newer HV-44a is 600M ohm, not sure what the HV-40 is. But connected to this load, it output a steady ~14kV. I can confirm that the output is DC volts, however, you'll have to figure out which is positive and which is negative yourself.

I need a lot less voltage than that to run a Crookes tube, so I am adding a 500M resistor as a load and part of a 1000:1 voltage divider so I can read the voltage and wiring up an LM317 as a variable voltage source so I can adjust it as needed. I'll be setting up a second module for a general purpose high voltage source, with feedback so it will be a regulated voltage. I'm building a portable system to demonstrate how electric and magnetic fields affect each other, it will also have some low voltage, high current variable supplies in it, too.

I'll update my review after I do these things.

I don't know if it will put out 400kV, that might be some hyperbole as I can't imagine it not arcing through the insulation. I also notice that many of these listings for these have sort of Engrish warnings about not running them open circuit without a load or close arc gap, and not to run them for very long or they will get hot. Judging from some of the reviews and comments, people have burned theirs up perhaps by not paying attention to these rather cryptically written warnings.

I posted a review (and utube vid) of a similar unit: the "sunkee 7kv" dc. I made a Jacob's ladder out of it. You can Google that and it will come up.

I fed this unit with a 1amp power supply and this unit starts sparking with my power supply knob set to zero!

The spark is huge and loud. After only a few seconds the room was filled with an unbearable stench of burning + ozone.

The output is very "pulsey" which i think if I gave it more amps it would speed up to a near continous arc. If I back off the power my sunkee 7kv gets more pulsey as well: snap, snap, snap instead of a more continous crackle. My 1 amp power supply seems to be straining: this unit wants more current, lol.

Honestly, the Sunkee 7kv is an easier, less scary device and better for beginners. I find my "world's smallest Jacob's ladder" relaxing. This unit is terrifying, loud and smelly!

The sunkee sounds like a high pitched dental drill, this is more like a banging noise.

I highly recommend to start with the sunkee 7kv if you're new to this type of device. It isn't as loud or power hungry.

Also get a base mounted holder with alligator clips to hold the red output wires safely: if the red wires are too far apart you'll instantly ruin this device. Also, you don't want this power running across your workbench and zapping your beltbuckle, lol. Secure the output wires safely about 1/4" apart for a start and work from there.

While the sunkee 7kv can run for minutes, this device gets warm after a few seconds.

I really like this thing! Cheaper than bottle rockets and almost as loud.

I've made the Fusor Plasma Club (Michael Logusz) and have played with a 5kv 18mA power supply a lot: this tiny thing beats it hands down for scary sparks!

I was going to use this for vacuum-tube x-ray production experimentation and internal plasma formation...plus cool sparks.

I hope this review helps, there as a ton of great infomative quantitative reviews for this product.

Very impressive. My observations are in line with other reviewers. One note to add - my unit came with two red insulated leads about 9cm long (high voltage output), and at the other end 16cm red (positive) and 12cm white (negative) input leads. I hooked up the input leads to a 5V power supply that I think was a cell phone charger, and got some really satisfying and noisy sparks, about 5-10 per second. My reading from instructions for this and a similar (well, identical) item indicate that it's important to keep the output leads close enough to actually generate the spark, as all that energy with no place to go will otherwise damage the inner guts of the thing. That is, if you aren't getting sparks you should disconnect the power. Also it shouldn't be run continuously for more than about a minute. I'm finding a few seconds at a time thoroughly satisfying.

Il pacco è arrivato in tempo! Funziona, gli archi partono fino ad una distanza di qualche centimetro. Dovrebbero essere sufficienti per costruire una Jacob's ladder di piccole dimensioni, con archi che arrivano fino in cima. Ovviamente la cifra dichiarata di output si definirebbe fantascientifica, si tratta di qualche decina di kV e non 400. Tutto sommato si tratta di un buon prodotto.
