I'm not as enthusiastic as others about this but it's my own fault. This thing is very very heavy! It's a large chunk of granite and feels like it. I bought it because granite was recommended on a cooking show as the best for grinding down garlic & herbs, which I use a lot. They also recommended a taller one so things don't jump out. I thought I checked the weight on this but maybe it was a different one that seemed more manageable. Not only is it heavy granite, but it's quite thick and large. The pestle is heavy too. This is natural stone so when it got some grease on it, it doesn’t come off -- it leaves a dark spot or few. When you first get it, you need to grind rice inside to help get off any dirt or bits. That took a long time because I wasn't sure what to look for, as it never really turned color or showed impurities. Then mash up garlic, add cumin, salt & pepper, toss it out, clean it and use. It's actually a beautiful piece of equipment, but hard to manage without a lot of strength. So I'm in the habit of scooping put the ground ingredients rather than trying to pour and scrape. There really is nothing wrong with this set that isn't operator error. Just be warned about the extreme heaviness before you buy it. Two good things -- it absolutely won't move while you use it, and the heavy pestle is good exercise. I alternate arms and just practice with dry rice when I'm not using it. Maybe eventually the granite will get easier to lift and hold, lol.
