I doubt this book will ever get 5 stars from the controversy it creates. But if its rating hangs around 3 stars, take that as a sign this book has made a solid point and touched a nerve, and why it should be taken seriously. There is a lot of truth in this book, and a lot of people are not going to like having to face that truth. The result is a book that needs to be taken seriously. I put this book up with "What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America" by Thomas Frank in understanding the current political state in America. Gibney sets forth a pretty good argument and backs it up with some pretty solid evidence. The result, is that despite the frustration I still feel about the current state of America and how we got here, this books offers a little relief by providing a pretty good reason why.

Of course, the people which should read it most, the Boomers, will probably ignore and/or deride it without really digging into it. As Gibney points out, that is the Ggneration which gave us a world of Truthiness and Alternative-Facts when they don't agree with reality.

But if you want to understand the politics in 2017 America, this is probably your best starting point.

Thoughts from a Booomer

I just finished my first reading of this book. Thankfully my kindle copy allows me to highlight sections for further study and cross referencing.
I am a Boomer having been born in April of 1945, until lately I considered myself a War Baby and not a boomer, however, I now recognize that I am 100% a product of the Boomer generation. I would be gladdened to be able to say that the Boomer description does not fit me, however, just as now individual snowflake feels responsible for the avalanche, I know that I am part of the problem. I grew up in a family where my parents were not profligate with money and only used a credit card to maintain a credit rating, faithfully paying back without interest. They never purchased a car on credit, other than personal loans from the bank for 30 days same as cash. Never pay a restaurant bill with credit for when the bill comes due the food is already eaten. These lessons were instilled by example and I find that I still do my best to keep to them. If you don't have the cash to buy something you probably don't need it still is my operating sense. I am, I admit slightly atypical for my generation, but I do see all that the author has pointed out as Boomer actions.
I would give the author my thanks for giving voice to so many ideas and concepts that I have been bothered with my generation.
Now that I have completed my Kindle experience, I am preparing to purchase a hard copy so I can pass this volume around to others to share these insights.

Must Read for the Boomers

While it may not be for to blame all the world's ills on one generation, this book effectively takes us through our most pressing g problems no possible solutions. It's tedious t times bu worth the red.

A must read given the current state of the nation. I am sure Boomers are deeply offended but it is truly fascinating to look at the timing of policies which transformed a financially sound and societally accountable nation reduced to a debt ridden and self serving one. I hope Xers and millennials will learn from the Boomers' failure and return to a more responsible stewardship when their time comes. Let's resurrect fairness doctrine and return to civil discussion.

The Case Against the Baby Boomers

The author makes a strongly argued, incredibly-well-researched case that the baby boomers damaged America through their self-indulgent and short-sighted behavior. Gibney has a great sense for details that illustrate his point and keep the case interesting. (Did you know that the house featured in the Nixon-Khrushchev debate of 1959 was a copy of a real house in New York?) It's good to keep in mind when reading other reviews here that a well-argued case is likely to anger many people--this is a sign of success.

Compared to another take on the general topic of "why isn't the future what it used to be?", namely "The Rise and Fall of American Growth" (by R. Gordon), Gibney's book is more lawyerly, less academic, and (perhaps most importantly) more fun to read.

A book every boomer should fear (they do, just look at all the BS reviews from Boomers who didn't read the book). For Generation X this book will confirm in factual detail everything you've suspected since you were 7. For Millennial's just waking up to reality, this book will be a primer for the rest of your political lives.
