The Best Multi-function USB Hub

This USB hub is really neat. It comes in a standard cardboard package with a USB cable and a DC power adapter. The device offers 7 USB ports, but only 6 are USB 3.0 connected. The green port is for high-speed charging only. The power adapter itself can provide 3 amps at 5V so there is plenty of power to go around. The Ethernet adapter works well too.

The Ethernet adapter here is 1000mbps and it works instantly on Windows 10 without the need to manually install drivers. There is no speed degrading even though the signal has to be converted to USB 3.0 and then processed by the computer.

The thing I liked the most about it is that it simply looks clean. I have it placed horizontally to the back of the desk and the DC cable and USB cable are hidden to the back. The USB ports are available on top which is a big plus compared to most 4-port USB hubs that offers them on the side. Now you don’t have to lift the hub to connect your USB devices. This is definitely a big plus.

The construction of this hub is solid. While it uses plastic instead of metal instead of the glass and plastic shown in the picture, but honestly, I liked this solid plastic better. It does not attract fingerprints and sticky residue. The curve of the plastic is also subtle and it adds more aesthetics to this product. The USB ports are placed far apart so that you can plug thicker devices such as USBs and adapters side by side without problem.

Another thing that is different from the picture is that the USB in port on the hub is a standard USB A port, not the tall port shown in the picture (as of August 2016), it is actually better to be an A port because there are more common and more low-profile.

As for the USB speed, it is top-notch. I was able to get 240MB/s reads on my USB flash drive. As you connect more high performance devices however, there is the USB 3.0 limitation in that it can only transfer at 5Gb/s. The real bottleneck seems to be the USB 3.0 port on the computer, some laptops can barely reach that speed.

Great once you find the correct driver

Works great for me, but took a while to find the right driver for the Ethernet port. The driver from Aukey's website didn't work; I think it's too old to work with macOS Sierra. Instead, download the RTL8153 driver directly from the Realtek website (not sure I can post a link, but google [realtek 8153 driver] to find it): [...]

It's also a bit annoying that it uses a nonstandard USB type A port for the cable connection to the computer instead of a type B port, but that's a minor point.

A Love & Hate Relationship!!!

Update 06/15/2017: Received replacement unit from AUKEY... And so far, everything is working as it should. USB 2.0-3.0 all are plugging in, detecting, and transferring like they should, AND NO DISCONNECTS/EJECTS!!!

So hopefully these new batches out of the factory have fixed the problems... The packaging even had label stating NEW which old ones didn't.

Thank you AUKEY for the fast, professional follow-up and standing behind the product and getting me a replacement without me having to do anything... thank you once again... :)

Update 06/08/2017: AUKEY has contacted me about the problem and is shipping me out a replacement to test and see if the problems are still happening... will keep everyone updated. Thank you AUKEY for the professional follow up as well...

Original Review:
The Gigabit Ethernet Connection is 100% solid and full giga-speeds. USB 3.0 speeds as well... but here is where the love and hate comes into place. USB 3.0 hard drives are hit and miss, some connect without issues and give me full speed, others actually will make this device disconnect from the computer and then reconnect (killing your internet connection and any other transfers taking place via USB). USB 2.0 devices connect but only half the time work while the other half the time starts transferring only to just stop/hang and never resume. When troubles arise, I always push the power button off/on to reconnect this hub. Because of the power/usb issues this device goes through, I have lost 2 1TB hard drives due to this disconnecting in such a way that it fires out the drives (no data is recoverable and a FULL FORMAT is the only way to use the drive going forward).

I really think AUKEY needs to work on putting the latest chips into their devices that handle power and speed properly while also giving the hub protection from firing out plugged in devices.

So yeah, I love it when it work, and hate it when it doesn't. So now I avoid plugging any USB 2.0 devices into this, and I have to play Russian Roulette with all my USB 3.0 devices when I plug them in.

Decent Value.

Windows 10 found it, and the network with no extra drivers. USB Speeds seem Decent, The powerbrick is large and can cover any close plugs, but is a BIG power supply, so should power all your devices plugged in.

The charging port is a nice extra, but for my Samsung phone it does not charge as fast an on official Samsung fast charger adapter. I plan on using this with a Pi-Zero eventually and powering the Pi Zero from the charging port. The USB 3 cable is a MALE - A to Male A cable, which is unusual compared to older USB hubs i own. I would rather have the NIC and USB/power ports come out of one of the small ends. as to fit better on my desk, as it is now the cables out the large side require more 'footprint' than needed.

Great unit with unfortunate power block (in my opinion)

I bought this USB Hub to replace another that seemed to malfunction every few months. So far, so good: I like the way it sits on my desk top (i.e. configuration of cables and ports), and it's working flawlessly. My only complaint is the integrated plug/transformer that means it can't be plugged into a power strip without blocking other plugs. I cannibalized the previously mentioned unit for the power block and everything is working fine.
