Another Fascinating Achievement, says an old Crichton-ite.

If I put together a list of the best near-term scifi, it would start with Max Barry's "Lexicon", Matthew Mather's "Darknet", and every single Daniel Suarez novel. His imaginings are truly amazing and awe-inspiring yet completely believable. His prose is so taut and clear and smooth that the technical jargon never bogs you down. It would be a treasure if we could all live to 200. We could start a pool for predicting which author correctly predicted the most technologies; Suarez would be a handicapper's dream. You see a lot of reviews stating that the author [fill in name here] is the next Michael Crichton (by the way, absolutely the correct measuring stick; he became my favorite author right from jump street with "The Andromeda Strain"). But I'm here to say that the better question is: Who will be the next Daniel Suarez?

Once again Mr. Suarez takes the reader from the wonders and promise of technology to the abject fear of the same technology and back again. Change Agent forces the reader to determine for themselves the path they will take when a technology of hope is introduced. Will the path be one of ignorance and acceptance or questioning and informed acceptance or rejection? This book highlights the danger of an ignorant and accepting populace.

Man has never been content to exist within nature. Man strives to control nature in order to create favorable future conditions. With the biotech devolution the ability alter living creatures including man now exists. Suarez shows us how biotech could lead to a biological "darkness" that historical political structures cannot contain. Prometheus unbound indeed.

Another good Daniel Suarez story. He incorporates enough believable tech developments to make the possibility of his novels becoming reality terrifying. His character development is not always completely plausible but has improved a lot since his early stories, and the prose flows a lot better. All in all, an enthralling and scary read.

I've loved all of Suarez's novels, and this is as good as or better than any of his previous work. I was unfamiliar with gene editing or CRISPR before reading, but now I'm thoroughly convinced that we're on the verge of vast changes in the world as this technology proliferates. The principal characters are all fascinating people with interesting motivations and goals. I would definitely read a sequel if he ever chooses to revisit this landscape.
