An Ok amp that's showing its age

An Ok amp that's showing its age
The Line 6 Spider Classic 15 modeling amp is an entry level amp. It arrived in a box that was surprisingly heavy. When you first remove the amp there seems to be nothing there other than the cabinet. It turns out the 15 opens in the back with an opening a little larger than a mail slot in the back. The power cable and various documentation is stowed in there. The build quality of the combo is very good. It is heavy and rugged of solid construction. All the knobs feel great, no play and consistent torque is required to move them and they all move smoothly. The on/off switch is a small rocker-style switch which seemed small but worked well enough. And the push buttons that toggle various modes on and off feel good and activate with a solid click. The cabinet itself is well made and has quite chunky molded plastic protective corners while all the controls sit on the chamfered edge that slopes diagonally at the front. This means that you can stand the amp flush facing the wall without any of the controls making contact, so they are protected from general knocks.I was pretty excited about this classic 15 modeling amp. I kind of skimmed over the specs and point of sales pitch without looking at the fine print. So when I got it home and fired it up and started to play with it I have to admit I was a little disappointed. It says modeling amp, but there are basically 4 main amp models one for each type of tone that most guitarists are most likely to need and a few basic effects. The point of sales pitch shows modeling software that I assume lets you change the preset amp settings. The only problem is that you need an accessory that costs as much as the amp itself in order to hook up the amp to your computer and run the software. That’s almost an extra $100 almost doubling the price to add extra functionality to an entry level amp. When I looked into the amp further it turns out that the Spider Classic 15 is actually exactly the same as the 5 year old Spider 15 with minor cosmetic changes. Black knobs instead of chrome and a nice brushed metallic black backplate to the controls. Otherwise, it’s pretty much identical. So forgive my initial disappointment. Despite this I did give it a fairly thorough going over and tested what features are available out of the box.It has four amp models in the four buttons across the top of the amp. These are the defaults that I believe can be changed with the addon that lets you hook up to your computer. They are labeled Clean, Crunch, Metal and Insane.CleanThis is supposed to be a clean guitar sound. Which basically means that the naked sound of your guitar is amplified. It works ok at a lower volume but has a little sustain/reverb added which increases as the volume goes up. If you play it loudly that sustain moves into a slight echo with a phase effect. So it’s a bit weird. I actually had to check that the effects channels were turned completely off.CrunchGives you a pretty nice ACDC crunch if you hit the strings hard, but also does a pretty good impression of a bluesy classic rock. I actually quite like it.MetalMetal gives you that 80’s/90’s metal high gain sound that, depending on how you equalize it, can be a good power chord rhythm or hard rock lead done.InsaneIs basically Metal Plus and sounds a bit over the top and edges towards buzzy.EQ SectionThe equalizer section of the amp has the traditional five knobs: Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble and Volume. There is a separate Master Volume on the far right. These are pretty traditional and work as you would expect. You can tweak the tones quite a lot by adjusting these and mix in some digital effects from the remaining two effect channel knobs positioned to the right of middle.Effects Channel KnobsEach knob as three effects on different sections of the knob rotation and can be varied from twisting from the left to right. These are: Chorus/Flange, Phase and Tremolo on one knob and Sweep Echo, Tape Echo and Reverb on the other knob. A tap tempo button is positioned above these and lets you tap a delay timing for effects that use it.Misc Controls and InputsYou also have the guitar input jack, a ¼ inch headphone out or recording jack. There is also a small 1/8 inch 3.5mm CD or MP3 input jack and a Cat5 type socket for the fancy pedal board and PC connectivity which is sold separately. In UseThe amp has a small 8 inch speaker with an open back. That makes the speaker a little on the small side but even so it doesn’t sound terrible. It is a guitar speaker and loses a little detail as well as low down punch a more expensive combo amp would have. At bedroom or living room volume it sounds ok which makes it an ok practice amp. The effects are a bit digital and the presets are quite loud by default. The volume knob on the equalize controls is also stored with the four presets. By default they are probably at 12 o’clock so if you want to play quietly and decide to change from clean to crunch, the volume will jump to being very loud. You have to touch the volume knob for it to adjust to the knobs volume to the lower physical position. You can set your own amp presets. It’s not obvious how to do that without the manual, so you may want to keep it handy. The amp preset sounds themselves sound ok but I wasn’t too fond of the built-in effects. I only really used the reverb when playing because the others sounded a bit digital and not really my thing.ConclusionIt’s an ok amp. But it is showing its age. It’s basically their old spider 15 amp with some cosmetic changes to bring it up to date and make it look cooler. I guess the Classic in the name is there to tell you it’s their trusty old practice amp. It’s on the expensive side of cheap amp but does sound better than most amps you will get in a starter pack. However, if you can stretch to $200 (about $50 more) there are a plethora of modern amps available from Line 6 and other manufacturers. The Spider 30 is a modern Line 6 modeling amp that offers hundreds of effects, amp sims, programming and recording via USB to your PC or mobile device. When you get so much for an extra $50 it is very hard to justify this amp and it’s older tech. The Spider Classic 15 fares quite well against my Marshall MG15CFX which is the same generation. The default presets are better and will get you started faster while the Marshall requires a lot more tweaking to get a good sound. This one has better high gain distortion tones while the MG15 has cleaner clean tones. Overall the Spider Classic 15 just edges it. But again if you can stretch to a modern current generation modeling amp like a Line 6 Spider 30 or 60 or a Marshall CODE 25 or 50 then I would highly recommend one of those. The newer generation of modeling amps are incredibly versatile by comparison.

As a lifelong guitar player, I always played tube amps and had a massive pedalboard for my effects. When I reached the point recently where I needed a new amp, I decided to seriously consider a modeling amp like the Spider V, and I am so glad that I did.

Tube amps are heavy and absolutely no fun to schlep around. Individual pedals, while giving you great control over your effects chain, come with the annoyance of patch cables and power supplies or batteries. Add a wireless unit to this and you're talking about a nightmare of cords.

The Spider V 60 eliminated all of these problems.

The amp is lightweight, any effect you could ask for is already built-in, tuner is built-in, and it's wireless-ready - just pick up a Line 6 G30 Wireless adapter and you're all set.

The 128 presets had some very usable tones, and, as expected, a few real honkers. Mostly my objections to many of the factory presets were that often they sounded like someone had thrown a blanket over the amp. I can tell you this is NOT characteristic of the amp - just really sketchy patch programming. I started programming tones from scratch and this amp positively screams - solid lows, punchy mids, and highs that sparkle.

The process for editing and creating patches is so ridiculously easy, if you can get around your smartphone this thing will be a piece of cake by comparison - the interface is very, very intuitive.

The amp, cab, and effects models are exhaustive enough to give you a huge number of choices, but not so overwhelming that you get frustrated.

With this amp, I can show up for a gig with nothing else but my guitar in-case and I am covered. Tuck the G30 Wireless adapter into the case, along with a change of strings in case of breakage, and you're good to go.

I'll also mention that the wireless recharges right in the input jack of the amp, and after an hour of playing, one fifteen minute break with it recharging brought it back up to full charge. I'm impressed.

Add a Line 6 pedal board to this amp and you have everything you will ever need for live shows. And don't get me started on the use of the amp as a recording interface. Plus, you can do deep editing via your iPhone, PC or Mac if you're so inclined.

I first used the amp publicly for a live performance of the Rocky Horror Show, and with zero PA support for the guitar and a pretty large room (~200 people) the amp held its own just fine against a keyboard, bass, full drum kit, and a PA full of singers. It managed this turned up almost exactly halfway - if I need to be any louder than that, get me some PA support.

Overall, I would absolutely buy this amp again. I am 100% happy with every aspect of it.

This amp is so much fun and the ultimate guitar tool. I have been playing in cover bands for almost 20 years, and this amp allows me to get any sound I want, whether it's a Hendrix solo, Pearl Jam tone, Warren Haynes solo, or an acoustic sound for my acoustic sets. I do recommmend getting the floorboard if you plan on using this thing live for easy switching. So many options but now that I have my channels organized, it's easy. I have an old Line 6 Flextone amp that's 17 years old and the tone on the new one is significantly better. Much more accurate and warmer. The app is great and I HIGHLY recommend using it to program all the levels for your presets. The presets that are free to download through the app are a huge time saver. I downloaded a bunch, tweaked them, saved them to presets on the amp, and have used them live at shows. I could not be happier.

I purchased this amp to use for practicing at home. I chose the 120W model because it has a 12” speaker. I like to play a lot of (very) dropped tunings, so having a larger woofer helps with low frequency response. For reference, the low C of drop C is ~65Hz and drop-A tuning on a 7-string goes down to 55Hz. Low E on a bass is about 41Hz.

My biggest fear was the amp would be too loud for practicing without being obnoxious to anyone else in the room. Prior Line 6 amps I have owned had basically two volumes: silent and loud, with the volume knob just piling on loudness.

My fear was unfounded - I am extremely pleased with the volume knob on the Spider V. The lower volume levels are perfect for practicing.

As for the actual tones - I’m coming from an ancient PODxt Live piped into a full-range PA system. Compared to my pedal (which I purchased the “Metal Pack” for), the amp’s default presets are rather meh. I suspect they are meant to showcase the different capabilities of the modeler and function as starting points for putzing around. Which is ok - we’re all way too picky for Line 6 to pre-package good presets for everyone.

However, if you start from scratch and know what you’re doing, you can construct a good tone fairly quickly. The Spider Edit app for iOS is pretty quick and easy to use. There are good HOWTOs and videos on dialing in the Spider V’s sound if you’re new to modeling.

You can also download user submitted tones through the app, searching by song or band names returns a list with star ratings for each tone. I’d say the 4-star tones I’ve found so far weren’t bad, especially at least at capturing the essence of the original’s sound. Plenty good enough to practice.

The amp plays whatever sounds come from your connected tablet/phone, so you can play along with songs/tabs/drum loops extremely easily, which was 90% of the reason I bought this amp in the first place - running my iPad through my mixer into the PA was too much a PITA and it was discouraging me from practicing.

My one pet peeve with this amp, and the biggest reason I gave it only four stars - the built-in drum loops are pre-recorded. Which means you cannot adjust their tempo, so using them to do any type of serious practice is out of the question. I’m somewhat irritated that Line 6 doesn't allow us to customize the built-in metronome other than selecting from a few standard sounds. No ability to tick on quarter/eighth/triplet notes and so-on, which is standard functionality with even $4.99 metronome phone apps. I’d imagine Line 6 could patch this functionality in with a future firmware update.

Summarizing: fantastic practice amp, decent tones after customizing, low volumes are usable without compromising sound. Having a built-in wireless G10 receiver is absolutely awesome - my entire practice setup only needs one cable (Lightning to USB for my iPad, which is fine, because the tablet charges while connected).

    Definitely worth the money.

The cabinet is very weak as a result it cannot hold the speaker in place. The problem in both the pieces I received is the speaker was fallen in the cabinet. I don't know about the quality.

But thumbs-up to Amazon and the dealer's service. My friends you will be rewarded for your service. For I am a man of God who you have served. God bless you abundantly in the name of Jesus.

Ladies and gentlemen... If you guys are looking for an amp with the best quality at the cheapest rates then it is definitely LINE 6! This spider classic 15 modelling amp was well packed and delivered without any damage. Thanks Amazon.

As far as the tones are concerned it has an amazing quality with in built pre amp settings for CLEAN, CRUNCH, METAL & INSANE. For a beginner it would be heaven! And for those who are pro/semi pro it is a quality amp which can be tuned as per your requirement. Quality of the speaker is exemplary...even at full volume gives you a crisp and clear tone(depends on the quality of the cables as well).
One important fact is that it gives more of a tone for the ones who prefer playing Hard Rock/Metal.... Don't worry guys the crunchy tones ain't that bad...will definitely meet your expectations of playing Blues as well as Jazz.
