Richard Risemberg was dragged to Los Angeles as a child, and has been working there in a number of vernacular occupations since his teens while writing poetry, articles, essays, and fiction, editing online 'zines, sneaking around with a camera trying to steal people's souls, and making a general nuisance of himself, which is his forte. He's survived long enough to become either a respected elder or a tedious old fart, depending on your point of view, and is still at it. It hasn't been easy for any of us.

4.0 out of 5 stars I've finished now. Great book, second in the series and I'm looking forward to the next.

Now I've finished and I can say
This is a great book that I truly enjoyed. All set in 80s L.A. Echo Park and a small town in the Sierras. It has a real affinity for the time and space and great insights about the philosophy and history of the city.
It's a noir unwitting-detective novel centered around a very relatable character Lenny Strasser. Nobody gets hurt too bad in the scary parts but we are quite worried at times.
I read his first in the series The Dust Will Answer and this is a worthy addition.
I'm looking forward to more.

I've left my previous review just for context
I've just started this book and I'm loving it. It's set in the Eastside of L.A. in the early 80's. I know that we're heading off for adventure now but his noir style and observations of L.A. culture at that time are a nourishing, clever treat.

Talking about the houses slapped together in the hills of Echo Park "Los Angeles has always been a city rooted in the provisional. But then we're all provisional in this life; we just don't want to admit it."

Talking about freeways "No matter how much time it 'saves' you, it's a waste of time..."

I know adventure is coming, I hope it doesn't get to gaudy, We're on a road trip to the Sierras now and I'm enjoying the ride.
