Book overview

Prepare to take part in one of the greatest adventures from the infinite future of the DC Universe, and join the industry’s top creative teams in a round-robin, no-holds-barred, storytelling extravaganza titled THE KAMANDI CHALLENGE!

Born from the mind of Jack “King” Kirby, the post apocalyptic Earth of Kamandi has been a fan favorite for decades, and now 14 intrepid teams of writers and artists build on this incredible foundation and take the title character on an epic quest to find his long-lost parents and travel to places seen and unseen in the DC Universe.
Each issue will end with an unimaginable cliffhanger, and it’s up to the next creative team to resolve it before creating their own. It’s a challenge worthy of “The King” himself! In this premiere issue, the Last Boy on Earth is dragged from his safe haven by a group of tigers, only to face the nightmarish threat of the ultimate weapon!

The Kamandi Challenge #1 is outstanding! It incorporate several nice homages/tips of the hat to the original series (Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth) while updating the look and feel of the characters and settings and adding a new action-packed storyline to the Kamandi canon. In short, it appeals to both older fans like myself and newer fans who are just getting exposed to the wonderful world of Jack Kirby's imagination. I can't wait to read the subsequent issues as they come out!

I would also highly recommend purchasing the Jack Kirby's Kamandi Omnibus covering issues 1 through 40 (https://www.amazon.com/Jack-Kirbys-Kamandi-Omnibus-Kirby/dp/1401271200) which is being released on July 25, 2017. It combines the two previously released Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth by Jack Kirby Omnibus Volumes One and Two which were published on October 4, 2011 and December 18, 2012, respectively. I purchased these two volumes as they came out but they are now out-of-print and fetch high prices on the resale market. I will be double-dipping for the new combined Kamandi Omnibus to support the cause in the hope that sales are sufficient for DC Comics to release a final Omnibus that covers the remaining issues 41 through 59 which Jack Kirby did not work on. That way fans will be able to own the complete adventures of Kamandi.

i love this!!! i read kamandi as a kid but never fell in love with his continuity because i needed money for more war comics BUT this challenge is an awesome idea. when i was in third grade, i started a series of books entitled "skull raiders" and the same hand away was utilized. i'd write five pages then give it to my bud, jeremy, who would then hand it off to bill, who did the same with justin before coming back to me. it was about reanimated w.w.2 skeletons continuing to fight the war despite the fact, they were all nazi or american skeletons. so, when i hear about each issue of this challenge would be written and illustrated by the same team for one issue before handing the next issue to the next dynamic duo... and, yes, there are sub-plots as well as cliffhangers. i can't wait so i am buying the monthlies but totally plan on buying the hardcover collection later.
