UPDATED: 9/27/17: I had (as below) a crash 31 days into operation. It has been one month, but I got my drive back with 99% recovery off the damaged HD. This may not seem "perfect" but in a NAS array it would allow a total rebuild to perform MUCH more quickly. When my drive failed is was pretty bad, you could hear something rubbing. Not a typical drive failure. I chose to try the data recovery, I didn't actually need to as I keep a running daily backup, but it was a very valid test on 6tb worth of data. I'm glad I made this purchase and I am intending to get 4 more and fill out a NAS build. I'll be back in a year with final impression. A 1 year 24/7/365 test is a solid data set (for a single NAS test).

PURCHASE: I purchased this drive as a test before I committed to purchasing another 4 for my NAS. As of today I'm VERY glad I waited. First impression of the drive that it was fast (for a physical drive), quiet and didn't run too hot. In fact significantly cooler than the WD Black and Green drives I've used in the past. I loaded up the drive and began using it as a daily backup (in tandem with my standby NAS). My intention was to change out the drives one by one in my NAS this weekend since it had passed the 30 day test quite well. Much to my dismay the drive disappeared from my computer today (day 31). I've done all the usual things checked connections, even went so far as to move it into a different computer, all to no avail this drive is dead, you can hear this low pitched beep like sound every 10 seconds or so that is coming from inside the drive. You can feel the drive and it vibrates in time with the noise.

NOW FOR GOOD NEWS? Because this drive comes with their +Rescue plan, free data recovery I was able in less then 5 minutes to get a replacement drive headed my way, a return shipping label (their expense both ways) to return my drive. Once they have recovered what they can from the damaged drive they will send me a drive to reload onto the new one. Their customer support was very friendly, knowledgeable and quick to deal with me in a professional manner.

Once I receive the new drive and data replacement I'll give it a 60 Day test run. If all goes well I'll write this down to a fluke and purchase the other 4 drives to fill out the NAS. Since my original attraction to giving Seagate another shot at my business was the +Rescue plane, it will take a bit of time to bolster that back up to purchasing a thousand dollars more.

Silent, unlike WD Gold series

As a long time builder of my own PCs and having a fairly large "data" collection, the majority of my HDDs have been Seagate brand. I have never had a drive fail, or experience any issues with them whatsoever. I recently decided to upgrade my storage from multiple smaller disks into some larger ones and went with a WD Gold Datacenter drive. Not sure why I went against what I've always used, but I'm sorry I did. That drive made a clunk noise every 3-5 seconds that shook my whole tower. After doing some research, I still couldn't figure out if this was a normal occurance with these drives (some posts said that it is a result of redistribution of lubricant blah blah blah, while others said no it's not normal and mine doesn't do that etc..) either way; it drove me nuts and I couldn't live with that for another 5 minutes let alone for the lifetime of the drive. So I returned it and went back to Seagate. Got the IronWolf Pro 8TB, and it's dead silent. Been loading it up all afternoon and can't hear a thing.

Long story short, if you want a large, QUIET, and guaranteed dependable drive with free data recovery, this is the one for you.

We used these as internal backup drives in a Hyper-V server, after using Seagate Archive drives for several years. We are seeing backups taking less than 10% of the time of the Archive series. While clearly these are different products for different uses, and the IronWolf would obviously be faster, we had been assured the sequential write speeds of the Archive series would be sufficient for our scenario. And they have been - backups do complete well within the allowed window. But we've seen backups that take four to six hours to Archive series drives take mere minutes going to the IronWolf Pro's. Importantly this now means backups are more reliable because they complete so quickly - the likelihood of failure or outage during a backup is now significantly smaller. We have them configured in a Microsoft Storage Spaces mirror configuration formatted with ReFS, providing both redundancy and file integrity checking.

We have been nothing but impressed by the performance of the IronWolf Pro series drives, and intend to replace all our Archive series drives with IronWolf over the coming quarter due to the substantial reduction in risk that results. We highly recommend them to anyone requiring storage at this capacity.

Performs well, but runs hot

Performs well, but runs hot--about 120-130F, even in a direct fan-cooled drive enclosure pushing a lot of air over it. I prefer their 5900 RPM NAS drives as they run around 95-103F under same conditions, but Seagate doesn't make it at that speed beyond 4TB. In a NAS RAID, the performance of individual drives becomes less important as you increase the number of drives you have in your RAID group, so I don't quite understand why Seagate chose to go with 7200 RPM for a NAS drive. The only reason I can think of is so that they can save some money by making one line of drives and slap on the rotation vibration sensors for the NAS version, rather than manufacturing two different lines. But I rather have a cooler running, less power-hungry drive in my NAS. I think I'll have to consider WD Red NAS drives that run at 5400 RPM from now on, though it's slightly more expensive per TB. I just can't afford to risk premature failure of a 8 or 10TB drive--the rebuild times are painful.

Hearty and Longer Lasting

Finally a drive that lasts a reasonable amount of time. I have replaced many of my hard drives the past few years and this drive is the most reliable I have used yet. It costs a little bit more but is completely worth the extra money. I will never buy a regular HDD again after using the Iron Wolf Pro drives. And yes, I will buy this drive the next time I need to replace on of my failing drives.
