So big-ticket items upfront and why you should consider this TV or another Sony instead of Samsung and others. My recent experience with a Samsung 4K TV purchased for my living room has left me wanting and I really wish I'd gone with a Sony. The 'why' will be more evident below but to summarize:
>> Integration of Android TV as opposed to whatever Samsung smart TV features that they'll stop supporting in 2-years.
>> Better remote
>> Equitable picture performance
>> More responsive and better-built UI (again, Android TV) likely due to better processor
► Picture quality:
The XBR-49X800E features a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution with High Dynamic Range 10 (HDR) support. If none of that makes sense then that's okay, but basically where any mid-level to high-end TV wants to be. The picture quality is exceptionally good, especially considering this our set is playing kids show most of the time.
I suspect most folks will be satisfied with what the 800E offers, however, if I had to pick one area to point out as lacking it would be the black levels. That's not especially surprising considering that's the most difficult color for sets to product accurately and a big part of what separates big-ticket TVs from their cheaper cousins. This TV uses edge lit LED technology and accurate black levels are one of the limitations. Still, I'll underscore that the picture is really good!
The refresh rate is 60Hz, again, more expensive TVs will double or further exceed that rate.
► Audio:
The audio quality isn't theater-level nor should it be. The speakers are just okay and definitely will do if that's all you have. A good soundbar would go a long way here.
► Smart TV - Android TV (Google Chromcast):
By far, one of my favorite features in this set (and any Sony TV) is the fact that Android TV is baked into the set and remote. If you're already a Google ecosystem user, then you're set and ready to go in a matter of moments with a world of video and audio services easily accessible. If you're new to Goole Chromecast or Android TV getting setup is super easy and takes a few minutes.
This TV fully supports features like voice controls and Google's AI assistant. That makes things incredibly easy to find even for my kids and wife! The remote features shortcut buttons to Google Play and Netflix services. Other apps are super easy to find via the onscreen UI.
As a Samsung TV owner who previously recommended Samsung to friends and family, I'm a complete Sony convert. Samsung repeatedly makes its SmartTV features obsolete and unsupported in short order. I've just taken to recommending folks who have Samsung TVs (and others) just get a Chromecast to bypass the Samsung SmartTV features entirely.
Another huge bonus - Sony TVs do not feature advertisements as Samsung sets do. Ads on my TV are unwelcome in whatever format and especially baked into the UI like with Samsung.
► Inputs/Outputs:
>> 4 x HDMI
>> 1 x Component
>> 1 x Composite
>> 1 x RF (antenna/cable)
>> 1 x Toslink digital audio output
>> 1 x 3.5mm audio output
>> 1 x Ethernet
>> 3 x USB
► Closing:
I really can't stress how much I like this set. It works great and the picture quality is superb. The 2017 model was a steal when I purchased it. Most definitely recommended!

*****UPDATE (after 1 year of constant use)
I am still very pleased with this purchase. It was the best value for the money and I wouldn't replace it with any different unit that was even $500. more. I've called the Sony Support people just to help set a few things up and they were easy to reach & very helpful.
I bought Sony Blu-ray player & a moderately priced sound bar that came with a good separate Bluetooth bass. It is good & bassy enough that my poor husband occasionally gets woke up at the opposite end of the house when I am watching movies late at night! It also works with some of the Sony Bluetooth speakers that make it a 5.1 set up in the future. I also bought an additional Sony Blu-ray player that is a World all regions player so I can buy any Blu-ray or DVD sets from Amazon UK for example & they play! Occasionally, titles have better features on other regions versions & prices!
When I say this TV has been used constantly I mean often up to 18 hours a day! We live out in the middle of nowhere & are retired/disabled so this is our main entertainment. And I've been a Home Theatre enthusiast since Video Tape players got invented in the 1980s. I have tried to buy the best quality in moderate-lower high end components. I have always done much research before making my purchases. Hope this all helped!

There is one thing that I am extremely disappointed with this TV - the lack of ability of customizing the TV operations. It doesn't sort and organize the channels in the order that I want. Managed to find a workaround but it involves 3 or 4 steps and who has the time or energy to do that every time one wants to change the channel!
I'm not a big fan of the Android OS either. It's very clunky and so not 2017! I am also surprised that a reputed brand as Sony still has a remote control of the 70s. Only cool feature on the remote is the voice command. However, it only works for searching the internet. It doesn't change the channels or volume. It does do some other operations like accessing the apps but it becomes kinda hard to remember which operations it does or doesn't. The voice command is very handy but how much internet browsing does one do on TV?
I do a lot of YouTube viewing on TV. This TV connects super fast to the YouTube app from your phone. However, it loses the synchronicity with the phone for apparently no reason. For instance, you might be watching a video that you have pushed through your phone and at some point wanna forward or go backward only to realize that the phone app is no longer in sync. You then have to disconnect and reconnect again and in so doing, you lose all of your queued playlist.
These little things are extremely annoying to me...especially when your previous and cheaper TV was performing those things better.
Image output wise, this is the best TV I have ever owned...very satisfied. However, operation-wise / navigating through the TV, I am extremely disappointed.
- Great colour.
- Motion Flow is excellent for watching anime, making it really smooth.
- Backlight bleed is not bad for an ips pannel.
Cons:
- Corners are noticably darker.
-Four dead pixels out of box, it is not visible for two meters viewing distance, so not a huge issue. But if you are planning use it as a monitor and sit any closer, it is noticeable in a white background and annoying.
-For any content that is not 16:9 ratio, like movies, there is a great chance that Motion Flow will not work. Apperently it is an old bug reported since 2017 (or maybe earlier), and Sony haven't fix them. It is disappointing because I bought this TV for its excellent motion handling, but it won't work for many movies. It can be fixed by using kodi to reduce the black bar of the source content a little bit, then Motion Flow will work. But for an expensive TV like this, such an old bug should be fixed by Sony.
