An intriguing setup to what looks to be an interesting series! Emily's skills are incredibly impressive, and I like the fact that her distance and loner attitude have a good reason behind them rather than generic teenage angst. Her desire to help people also sets her apart from a lot of inward-focused teen characters--ex-spy/assassin or not. :) I also like the fact that Vick's reluctance to take her is based more in the belief that she can't be what Emily needs than just not wanting the responsibility. And the way her protective instinct slams into overdrive when Emily goes missing makes me sure I'm going to like her, although there will probably be some bumps in the road.

It's going to be very interesting to see how all the various factors in their relationship play out--Vick's protectiveness and (sometimes over-)confidence vs. Emily's deeper understanding of what's truly behind all this; Vick's commitment to give her as much of a real family and normal life as possible and Emily's loner tendencies; Vick's lack of faith and Emily's strong Christianity. I feel like this story did a great job of setting up the background for the remainder of the series and making me want to read more without feeling like I was locked in because of cliffhangers (which I greatly appreciate!) And for the record, I do intend to read more! :D

It was a clean well-written book and I would have rated it 5 IF it had been a COMPLETE book! Books should have some kind of warning when they are incomplete. it is a trick to provide the first one free know that the reader will have to purchase the others to know how the books ended. Well, I'm retired on a fixed income so I will not be buying any just to see how it ended. My memory is not that good anyway!

What could be more heartless than abducting a child? Worse ... to genetically alter her? This is Book 1 of The Tacket Series, thus far. Great writing, tense situations ... but if you don't like cliffhangers, this isn't for you. Thus far there are seven books in the series.

Emily is a runaway teen adopted by the only person in the world she could trust, but no sooner adopted than orphaned when her new mother was diagnosed and died of pancreatic cancer. Before Jennifer Brelin died, she recommended that Emily trust her best friend, Detective Victoria Tacket. Jennifer wrote a letter to Victoria asking her to adopt Emily. With further instructions to change Emily's name and make sure the records were scrubbed from any computers. However, Vick doesn't see the letter until after she's told the child protective services guy it would be impossible for her to adopt the child.

That's information enough. Emily disappears, but has to hang around to grab that letter. A master of disguises, Emily hides in plain sight at the police headquarters, determined. Alarmed, Vick issues a missing person bulletin, the letter still unread. In a quiet moment after the rest of the officers have gone home for the day, she sits down to finally read Jennifer's last letter to her and immediately realizes too late that the missing person bulletin is the last thing she should have done. She's in danger.

Oh my. As you can see, this is a spine-tingler, a step above your normal mystery.

This was an amazing start to the Tacket Secret series! I loved getting to know Emily and Vick. Emily escaped an abusive situation and found an amazing woman to take her in only to have her die a few months later. Vick Tacket was named guardian since she was a friend of the late woman. Of course problems come up. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of it! (Hopefully the General dies)

This had great potiential but it was full of fillers and i felt as if it would never get to the point. Also the description is just a trick to get you to buy it the main girls former guardian didnt even appear throught any part of the book. It was okay but i found myself skipping a lot of the book. I got this for free because of kindle and prime but if you dont get it free i wouldnt suggest buying it. Even though it had a lot of strecthes i believe IF you can get the second book for free maybe get it. But i dont know if its any better because i havent got it myself. Overall it needs more work.

This book is fantastic! While recovering from the flu, I went through every book of this series, it's so gripping. I found myself very invested in the mystery and attached to the characters--so fun! Wish there were more books in this series. I also appreciated that the main character was a Christian... very few books nowadays seem to respect faith. And while not a central part of the book per se, it makes it a series I'm eager to share with my kids.

I have given the book a 5 star rating, because it is an intriguing and fascinating story that I can imagin running for a while.
I am a bit disappointed that this was just a short story. Normally, I stay away from them. I will probably get the box set, as it as gripped me and I want to read about there exploits.
I cannot say that I would recommend this book, until i have read the first book in its complete form.
