Emily Brelin didn't have a choice about her criminal past. She can't think about the future. This moment, each moment, is what she can control... as long as he doesn't find her.
Ever since Emily escaped her handler three years ago, she's been under the radar. She'll do whatever it takes to stay that way, after she keeps a promise.
Detective Victoria Tacket rose quickly through the ranks of New York's largest police force by keeping her career and her personal life separate. Now they've collided.
Vick's best friend has died, and the will has named her as guardian of Emily, a teen daughter Vick never knew existed--and could never adopt. But when the mysterious teen vanishes, Vick scours Golden City searching for her.
Though grieving and confused, Vick must find Emily before the man she's running from does.
Out of the Shadows jump-starts a fast-paced, 7-book action adventure, The Tacket Secret.

Review
"Step Out of the Shadows and Onto the Ride!" - Suzanne Waltner, Remembrancy ★★★★★
"I do love it when a book exceeds my expectations. Out of the Shadows did just that and more! A story that mixed science fiction with faith, I suspect many a young reader will love this exciting start in a promising series. Plus with shifting perspectives between a young teenage girl and a female detective, this really is for everyone." - Bekah, Will Bake for Books ★★★★★
"An exciting start for a promising series. The chapters are short and keep you wanting to flip through the pages at lightning speed. This sci-fi would make a great book for even the most reluctant reader--boy or girl." - Pam W. ★★★★★
"Spellbinding! Keeps the reader turning the pages. Emma Carrie weaves the story of Emily's unforgettable journey of self discovery as she flees the dark secrets of her past. Is she ready to come out of the shadows or will they drag her back to the darkness?" - Xwiser ★★★★★

It's going to be very interesting to see how all the various factors in their relationship play out--Vick's protectiveness and (sometimes over-)confidence vs. Emily's deeper understanding of what's truly behind all this; Vick's commitment to give her as much of a real family and normal life as possible and Emily's loner tendencies; Vick's lack of faith and Emily's strong Christianity. I feel like this story did a great job of setting up the background for the remainder of the series and making me want to read more without feeling like I was locked in because of cliffhangers (which I greatly appreciate!) And for the record, I do intend to read more! :D
Content--mention of predators and a girl being kidnapped and trained as an assassin; gunplay and people shot, including death; mentions of blood, wounds, and vomiting (not graphic); mentions of a drug lab; a woman uses her shirt to cover a wound (no details); two instances of God's name in exclamations by a non-Christian
Dr. T.
Emily is a runaway teen adopted by the only person in the world she could trust, but no sooner adopted than orphaned when her new mother was diagnosed and died of pancreatic cancer. Before Jennifer Brelin died, she recommended that Emily trust her best friend, Detective Victoria Tacket. Jennifer wrote a letter to Victoria asking her to adopt Emily. With further instructions to change Emily's name and make sure the records were scrubbed from any computers. However, Vick doesn't see the letter until after she's told the child protective services guy it would be impossible for her to adopt the child.
That's information enough. Emily disappears, but has to hang around to grab that letter. A master of disguises, Emily hides in plain sight at the police headquarters, determined. Alarmed, Vick issues a missing person bulletin, the letter still unread. In a quiet moment after the rest of the officers have gone home for the day, she sits down to finally read Jennifer's last letter to her and immediately realizes too late that the missing person bulletin is the last thing she should have done. She's in danger.
Oh my. As you can see, this is a spine-tingler, a step above your normal mystery.
Emily, a.k.a. Jessie, is a quirky heroine who keeps the reader rooting for her and wondering about her past. Vick is a top-notch police detective who’s clueless about parenting. I think the reader will want the two of them to make it work in the end—I know I do!

I am a bit disappointed that this was just a short story. Normally, I stay away from them. I will probably get the box set, as it as gripped me and I want to read about there exploits.
I cannot say that I would recommend this book, until i have read the first book in its complete form.
Thank you for keeping me interested
