I'm a native Oklahoman, born in the small town of Miami in 1945. Spent most of my life here in the Sooner State, except during my military time and a couple brief sojourns to Texas and Missouri. I earned my bachelor's degree in English from the University of Tulsa in 1970. As a Vietnam Era veteran, I served with the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Division near the Korean DMZ from 1967 to 1968.

Fresh out of college I worked as a high school teacher and coach, but transitioned into the business world after a few years where I morphed into an IT geek. Slogged through that grind until 'retiring' in 2007 to become a full-time writer.

I have five books published, all novels, all set in Oklahoma, present day and past. I grew up in small-town heartland America, and feel very blessed by that. My books, I hope, reflect that.

GAME, is a coming of age novel set in the fictional small town of Tsalagee the corrupted phonetic of the Cherokee word Tsalagi - CHA-la-gey). Treasure Kills, Legends of Tsalagee, set in the same town, was/is a branch into a different genre - one of mystery and adventure. Always a fan of westerns, and recognizing Oklahoma's rich history, I wrote Red Lands Outlaw, the Ballad of Henry Starr, a historical novel in the turn of the 20th Century Indian Territory and based on exploits of that notorious outlaw. That was so much fun I followed-on with West of the Dead Line, Tales of an Indian Territory Lawman, a fictional account of perhaps the greatest lawman of them all: the ex-slave, black American, adopted Creek Indian, Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves. My 5th novel, "Dire Wolf of the Quapaw," is a western/mystery. It's the first book in a planned series called "The Jubal Smoak Mysteries."

I'm currently nearing completion another novels: Book 2 of the Legend of Tsalagee series.

Saddle ride with an American icon

It's easy to imagine Outlaw Henry Starr, a true old-fashion American bad man plying his trade among the unsuspecting trains and banks of the early Oklahoma Territory, New Mexico, and Colorado. And even though he sported the big caliber Colt 44 Peacemaker, Starr always announced his presence, kindly asked the folks he was robbing to please turn over their money and valuables then thanked them for their trouble, never taking the life of an innocent citizen. Henry Starr claimed he had robbed more banks than both the James-Younger Gang and the Doolin-Dalton Gang put together. He started robbing banks on horseback in 1893 and ended up robbing his last in a car in 1921. He was the first bank robber to use an automobile in a bank robbery.

Phil Truman's masterful portrayal of Henry Starr left me with mixed emotions. I couldn't decide if Starr was a good man with a bad heart or a bad man with a good heart. He was plagued from early life with the idea that it was easier to steal than to work for a living, but later in life after spending many years in prison, he decided to teach kids that crime doesn't pay. His addiction to robbing banks cost him two wives, two children, a successful business, and many years on the run from the law. And just when it looked like he was getting his life straightened out, the addiction in his blood overpowered him again and led him back into a life of crime and eventually to death.

Red Lands Outlaw - The Ballad of Henry Starr is a mixed bag of love and hate, hurt and healing, happy and sad. It is a fast-paced spaghetti western in the vein of Two Mules for Sister Sarah and A Fist Full of Dollars. It is apparent that Truman did his homework and set this book in authentic Oklahoma towns and territorial locations. His characters are believable, drawing the reader into the story. His use of historical western figures such as Quanah Parker and Lawman Bill Tilghman bring the story to life without distracting from the main plot of the book. There's a slow spot or two, and the timelines run a little thin at points, but that's not unexpected when creating fiction around history.

This book isn't an epic adventure like Lonesome Dove, but it's not intended to be. It's just a good romp across the Oklahoma Territory sharing the saddle of a true western icon. So if you've got a Kindle or Nook reader, $2.99, and a free afternoon, buy this book, sit back, pour yourself a cold one, and enjoy a good book. You won't regret it.

okay, but could've been better

it's a pretty good read, with a glaring blooper at the end. Megan anonymously shows up at the funeral, leaving the diamond ring Henry gave her, in the casket, which means, she returned it twice. After getting out of prison, he visits her in spite of the fact she's remarried. When he gets on the horse to leave, she impulsively removes it, pushes it into his hand. He tries to sell it to his jeweler friend, who offers a low price. Henry decides to keep it. The ring isn't mentioned again till the very end. It's a nice touch, but he should've kept track of the little details. After finishing the book, I looked up the name Henry Starr and saw that many incidents had been left out, including that Henry stashed money somewhere, that no one will find. And he also made more than one movie, and was offered a starring role in more, but he turned it down out of fear of extradition. The book mentions only the first movie, and without any income from it, and no further movies, that was given as a reason to return to crime. There was also one scene in particular that was insulting to me as a Christian; when Henry met the preacher and attended one of their services. When I read stories about real people, I often wonder if they made peace with God, and I hope Henry used those last four days to do so. But Christian-bashing in the middle of a true western story would best be left for one's personal blog.

The book could have been called the life and times of Henry Starr. He was certainly a thief of his time. Some of his robberies were a fiasco from the start. He got his start by being convicted of a crime he didn't commit and it just went on from there. It is a sad story of a man that made too many bad choices in his life. Whether there's any truth to the story it is believable. Thanks for all the entertainment.

From 1893 to 1921, real life bandit Henry Starr spent most of his life robbing banks (and occasional other businesses and railroads). Always a gentleman, he always let the people in the banks know who he was (he took pride in his work) and told them if they cooperated no one would get hurt.
This leisurely western gives us a look at Oklahoma Territory and the Indian Nations. True life and fictionalized details are combined to make for a detailed tale about Henry's life and times. In this, he meets a number of famous people, from Qanah Parker, to Bill Tillghman, to hanging Judge Parker.
The people are the real story here, living in the final days of the old west when some people, like Henry Starr, didn't want the old days to end.
For Henry, the end was inevitable.

My surprise comes from the fact that Red Lands is not the genre I typically enjoy. Scene transitions could use some refining, but Truman did a great job with both the story and the characters. There are times when you empathize with Henry Starr and times you realize (despite his attempt to not hurt his victims) that he's just not a very good person. That the reader feels anything for a character is a sign of good writing, and Truman can tug on your emotions in more than one way. The end wasn't surprising, but catches you off-guard nonetheless. Well done. I will certainly recommend this book.
