Under, Lost, In Pain

As a huge fan of Matsyahu's music especially in his first couple of albums I am unfortunately disappointed in Undercurrent. It's been clear for a while that he has shifted his music from the earlier days of awesome Chassidic Reggae to this pop music, trash talking about blazing, etc but this is just depressing. Through this album I feel like Matis is in pain and it resonates in every track. You can feel it in the lyrics, in his tone, in his style. Makes me feel bad for him, feels like he's empty and lost inside, and thus makes me sad to listed this...instead of being inspired like his earlier days. Wish he would return back to his roots!

Akeda and now Undercurrent Amazing!!!

Really great album! Yes Mat changed the sound when he added the dub trio during the making of the album Akeda. You have to evolve as an artist with your music so that it's fresh and exciting. The Dub trio push the boundaries of adding milodic layering with the dub sounds. At the core is Mat's original rhythm and rhymes with his beat boxing that makes him Matisyahu. He also brought back a few of his previous band mates and you can definitely tell in the production of this album. The sad thing is everyone wants KWC over and over but I really love these last albums. If I have to give a best song I would say "Tell me". Although I've only had a few listens and with all Matisyahu albums they grow on you.

Jam Session

Being a big Matisyahu fan, it feels wrong and disloyal to criticize any of his work. He is one of the few artists who consistently puts out music with lyrics that embrace self-reflection, spirituality, faith, compassion, and disillusionment. Matis has gone through many changes and has had a few artistic missteps along the way, but many of us have continued to support him. With all this said, his current effort just doesn't stir the soul like much of his previous work. It's as if every song is long jam session involving a talented lyricist and a great band. Through several listens, I found myself constantly thinking, "Wow, Matisyahu and the band must have really enjoyed putting these songs together." Compare this to my experience listening to some of his best songs, where I just get absolutely lost in the passionate lyrics and amazing beats, bass lines, etc. I hope others enjoy this effort, but I am very disappointed.
