Clare survived the attempts on her life by the leader of an alt-right extremist group and is excited about her future with her fiance by her side. The holiday season is beginning, but the mood in Bayfield is far from merry when young women begin disappearing. Wanting to help in some way, she volunteers to assist in the search for the women and finds that she, too, has become a target of the person responsible. Almost anyone could be the culprit, but the clues point to it being someone with inside knowledge about her life.
As the tension mounts, she feels the threads of her relationship pulling apart, and her fiance grows more distant with the arrival of a beautiful FBI profiler from D.C.
Can Clare hold on to the man she loves? Will it matter as the serial killer taunts her as he closes in on his prey? Her father taught her to hunt, but not how to survive when she is the one in the crosshairs.

About the author

Kate McGinn loves a good story. An avid reader, she enjoyed writing short stories and would begin writing a few chapters of a longer work only to set it aside. In 2015, she decided to begin her first novel, "Exodus", a romantic suspense story and the first book in the Clare Thibodeaux series. Book Two, "Winter's Icy Caress" was published in June 2017. Her third book in the series, "Never Show Your Hand", was published in November 2018. Her current works in progress include a humorous tale about a young woman, Natalie, who is one of the main characters in some of her short stories (Natalie is the main character in "Mucking Around" which can be found in the short story anthology, Bite-Sized Stories V. 2 and also in the recently published "One Million Project: Fiction Anthology" for charity.)
Kate pulls from her own life experiences when writing. She has worked over the years as a registered nurse, an Army Reserve officer, and owned/operated a Bed & Breakfast Inn. Born in New York City, Kate grew up in the Midwest and lived along the Gulf Coast and in Italy for many years before moving to Wisconsin. In her free time, she enjoys reading, golf, hiking, camping, travel and hanging out with a crazy yellow Lab. She and her husband have two adult sons, a lovely daughter-in-law, and live near the Mississippi River in an 1855 Greek Revival home.

The story was fascinating and full of unexpected twists and turns of plot. Just when I was sure I knew where it was heading it would suddenly find a whole new path to follow. And it was not jusr a romantic novel. There was a serial killer on the loose who was terrorizing Clare and somehow managing to slip past the high levels of security surrounding her. In addition to the complex men and fascinating female friends and neighbors, there is her beloved dog Max who plays a big role in the plot development also. All in all a really fun series of books that will draw you in and have you staying up way past your bedtime because it is just too interesting to not keep reading. Now, if you will excuse me, I must go purchase the next book in the series and get back to my reading.
While I enjoyed this second installment in McGinn's series, it didn't quite satisfy me as much as I would have liked. Claire goes a bit overboard on mentioning how lucky she has to have Wyatt, and Wyatt comes off as a bit of an insecure, insensitive jerk on several occasions. But, I have to say, it was easy to hate some of the antagonistic characters. It's a good fast-paced read for those who like thrillers.

In between all the relationship drama, women are going missing and Clare has also been targeted. Then an female FBI agent turns up and it appears that she has gotten cosy with Wyatt during the time he's been critical of Clare's friendship with Lee. Talk about double standards. Strike 2!
Clare discovers she's pregnant and despite everything, Clare and Wyatt reunite and have a hasty wedding, but tragedy strikes and Clare loses the baby. This is when Wyatt becomes irredeemable in my eyes. While she's still in the hospital, mourning her loss, trying to come to terms with the awful things she heard Wyatt saying to the murderer (and yes, they were said in desperation, to try and keep Clare alive, but they still upset her and this is a woman who has already lost both her parents and her twin brother to murder, so obviously she has some issue's there!) and instead of giving her time, he just walks out and abandons her. Strike 3!
To complicate everything even further, another man - Matt - seems to be making a move on Clare as well as Lee, who is still declaring undying love.
The end of the book covers a long period of time, Clare has packed up, moved on and is trying to get on with her life but is still hoping Wyatt will return even though 6 months have passed without a word from him. Seriously? Ummm...why? Has she not worked out that he's not worth it and that he let her down when she needed the most support? 3 strikes so he's out as far as I'm concerned. What on earth happened to the 'Ice lady' from book 1 who wouldn't let a man near her in case she got hurt?
I'm ambivalent about reading book 3 because these 'mysteries' just seem to happen around Clare, she's not really investigating them, more in the wrong place at the wrong time and all of that seems to go down around the train wreck of her relationships. Introducing Matt into the wreckage only makes it worse. She's already juggling the attentions of too many men - whether she's interested or not - adding another just detracts from the rest of the plot. On the other hand I really loved Shanaya's character and I'd like to read more about her, so the jury's out.

The storyline, and character 's are wonderful.
I was so pleased the third book was out as I went straight on reading.
I would advise anyone who is going to read this book to start with the first book, Exodus, as they do continue, and the second book, Winter's Ice Caress, does leave you with a cliffhanger.
Highly recommended.
