Problem with USB-C Plug Makes This Hard to Use (Previously said "Unusable")

Problem with USB-C Plug Makes This Hard to Use (Previously said "Unusable")
Update 9/8/17: Anker reached out to me immediately, and asked me to try another unit to troubleshoot. Although the second unit still had the same basic problem (the USB-C connector), I ended up using a small rubber band to limit the side-to-side motion and reduce the occurrence if the disconnections. Using it for a few weeks, I've not had any problems with the ethernet jack that I previously noted, and it worked well, although when I attached or removed items from the device, I was being careful not to move the cable too much. I'm increasing my rating based on both the device's performance with the rubber band fix, as well as Anker's efforts to understand and resolve the issue. I'm awaiting feedback from Anker before deciding on a final resolution.Original 8/3/17: I have become a fan of Anker products, so this one seemed like a easy decision, despite the expense; and it is the most expensive product I have purchased from Anker. Unfortunately, I plugged this into my new Lenovo laptop, and although I could feel it lock into place, it felt loose and I was greeted with numerous USB connection/disconnection notices. I unplugged and replugged a few times, but it wasn't until I turned the USB-C plug over and tried again that I seemed to get a solid connection. I was able to test all of the functionality of the device, and each worked as promised. But the next day I experienced the same connect/disconnect problem, regardless of what orientation the USB-C plug was in. I tried for a few more days, but it did not improve. I also experienced a separate problem with the ethernet jack, where it would not connect (w/two different cables) until I wiggled the ethernet plug a small amount (while holding down the unit firmly as to not cause a USB connection drop). This device is exactly the mini dock I needed at a not unreasonable price, so it is too bad about it's primary reason for being, the USB-C plug, does not connect solidly. I'm returning and will not be replacing it with anything other than a USB-C to USB-A adapter in the short term.

Update, nearly 2 years later:

This dongle continues to deliver. I got the 2018 iPad with USB-C and everything works! SD-Card and USB can import into Photos. Ethernet performance screams at 800+Mbps. HDMI allows viewing of Netflix and Hulu on every display I tried. Even passthrough power works. This is what USB-C is all about. Android, iPad, Macs, PCs - they all love this dongle.

Original:

I like this adapter quite a bit. I've had some others, including from AUKEY and Cable Matters, and find this one to be a good balance of price, functionality, and build quality. I've tested it on my Lenovo Yoga 720, 2016 Macbook Pro, and even a Samsung Tab S3 Android tablet - and have had no compatibility issues (except that Samsung stopped supporting HDMI?!) Ethernet speeds were fast, no complaints about other transfer speeds, though I haven't tested all use cases (ex. transfer SD card to USB storage.)

On devices that support USB-C power, the pass-through works ok but you charge rates will be diminished. The tablet and Macbook both experienced slower charge speed, but on the tablet this feature is a god sent because it only has the single USB-C. On the topic of reduced performance, just like all unpowered multiport dongles your HDMI output might be crappy at just 30Hz 4k. That said if you are rocking a decent 4k monitor and a laptop with USB-C and you plan on using that set up often, you should be investing in a proper dock anyway.

The device does get warm. Even at idle, plugged into all 3 test machines, the device will get warm. Stress it and it will get hot. The metal casing though does inspire a little more confidence in this regard compared to some of the all plastic ones I've used in the past. Over all it's a great device that has found more uses in my house than I expected. I picked it up in the ~$60 range and think that's very appropriate.

Lastly I did want to throw out my experience with the Samsung Tab S3 and the mini-dock - I can connect a USB-A storage device, a USB keyboard/trackpad combo, an SD card, power pass through, AND ethernet all at once. I can transfer files between all the various devices and networks, greatly expanding the capabilities of my device. I am kind of blown away as I never expected this.

I believe this is a solid product for the price and it achieves exactly what I was looking for. I have used it with a 2017 15" MacBook Pro and an HP Chromebook 13. On the Chromebook it charges the laptop and when I connect a keyboard and mouse to the two USB ports I can pretty much use it like a desktop with a big monitor. With my 15" MacBook Pro I am able to connect it to Ethernet, HDMI, and USB but need to separately connect a power adapter since it does not carry deliver power to run a 15" MacBook Pro. To be fair to Anker I didn't really expect it to as most USB-C docks seem to have the same limitations of between 30W and 60W, even those that cost twice as much. I also notice this dock runs fairly hot even with light use, and if my computer goes to sleep I find that I have to restart my monitor after waking it up and I've run into that issue with both the Chromebook and the MacBook Pro. The display issues could just be an issue of specific to my Samsung PX2370 monitor with the HDMI input, as I haven't had a chance to test this dock with different monitors and the same monitor doesn't seem to have the issue with its DVI input.

I really wanted to like this product. I saw the bad reviews and figured they didn't know how to work external displays or something. That happens on a lot of tech products.
I work in IT, primarily Mac support. I purchased this for my Macbook Pro 13". I have noticed it gets fairly warm - I wouldn't call it "hot" likes others have.
The USB ports seems to always work when I plug it in.
The HDMI port is pretty hit and miss. Today when I came into work and plugged in I had absolutely no HDMI and was unable to get it working without rebooting. I'm not willing to reboot my laptop just to connect a monitor so I will no longer use this device. I swapped to an Apple HDMI hydra and things are working without a reboot.
I did not test the Ethernet port.
The Build quality seems great. The USB-C connector doesn't seem to "click" into the port as others do. It seems a bit lower quality than almost every other USB-C connector I've used (including multiple Anker cables, which are great!)

Sorry Anker, but you should stop selling this product and reconsider the hardware you are selling with this device. This is not up to par for an Anker product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Anker Performance and Great Support
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2017
Anker has always been my go-to for power bricks but after a very disappointing experience with another manufacturer’s USB-C hub, Anker is now my go-to for USB-C kit as well.

The hub arrived in the usual, well presented packaging with the added surprise of a protective sleeve for those times when the hub is in my laptop bag. A nice touch that.

USB-B, HDMI output, power through and SD card access worked first time without any need to do anything other than plug it in.

Ethernet however refused to work. But a quick email to Anker support resulted in a driver download and install (plus the by now usual enabling of a third party kernel extension thanks to macOS High Sierra’s security controls) and working ethernet in less than 24 hours turnaround. Having never dealt with Anker support this was a very pleasant experience.

Pros: well designed and solidly made kit that makes my new USB-C only MacBook Pro work as I need to work.

Cons: Ethernet needs a third party driver but once that was provided everything works flawlessly.

Offers a great solution for MacBook Pros. I use this for extended periods in all environments, using the HDMI,USB 3 ports and Ethernet and it performs well. Getting the HDMI to work can be tricky but I suspect that's more the Mac side than this adaptor. My only grip is that I wish the tail/cable would be longer as with lots of connectors plugged in it puts a lot of strain on the USB C connector, it also gets extremely hot. However for the price it's amazing ! I actually want another one.
