Does exactly what it should

Within hours of installing an August Lock, Amazon debuted this item. For my use case, this was a better option. So I "upgraded". (Ironically, Kwikset has purchased August, so the two locks may merge in the future).

So my review will compare the two. (Keep in mind BOTH of them were very easy to install and work perfectly. Almost every one of the negative reviews here is written by a dullard who really has no clue what they are doing).

NOTE: Check your door before you order this or any smart deadbolt. If you have to push your door closed before you latch the bolt, or the bolt drags when locking or unlocking...a smart lock WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU. The motor is only so strong and obviously cannot align the door for you. I have checked two NEW houses and both doors are misaligned enough to make a smart lock not work. Blame lazy contractors.

Pros:
- Full internet connection included through the camera (requires $75 Connect module on August lock). I can monitor, open, and close the lock from my phone. (Without the module, the August lock can only access the lock and lock history locally, via Bluetooth)
- Guest keys are issued via text message (vs. app on the August lock). Easier to use for one-time (or non-smartphone) use.
- Video security included (for the price of the Cloud Cam, which is about the same as the August Connect module)
- And of course, Amazon Key functionality (fewer packages on the porch).

Cons:

- IMPORTANT! No door position sensing. Door can be locked when open. Delivery drivers and others must be sure to close the door. At least you can check it visually with the camera. (August has a door sensor which ensures it won't lock unless closed)
- No automatic door unlocking. (August will open automatically when you arrive home)
- Does not allow more than one person to have app access/notifications. Family members are permanent guests and have to use SMS to get in. (August uses the app and can provide more direct access to the lock, although still not automatic)
- No BT connection. They must have removed that hardware when they put in the zigbee to talk to the Internet. All unlock requests must go through the Internet. (August uses BT natively and Wi-Fi with the added Connect Module). So if your Internet is down, you have to use a backup key. Like the olden days.

Installation was simple on both locks. Don't be dissuaded...you can do it! :-) Don't mind the hapless hacks that say this thing is hard to install. It takes a few minutes with only a screwdriver. The instructions are very thorough.

I picked this model because no change in external appearance or keys was important to me.

All in all, I think I like this system better for my application. Remote access is more useful to me than local access. The Amazon Key feature is quite useful (just had a package delivered). And I'm the only one using it most of the time.

If you don't need package delivery, already have a camera, have multiple people in the house using the lock regularly, and especially if you don't need direct access to the lock over the internet...consider the August Lock for the same price (v3 only has Doorsense).

I suspect the software will improve over time. Obviously, the hardware can't be upgraded without buying a different lock.

Got this as part of an Amazon Key set as my first smart deadbolt, and I'm pretty well pleased with my purchase.

Pros:
- Allows me to control the lock remotely from the Amazon Key app, as well as lock the door with Alexa.
- Allows me to give permanent or temporary 'keys' to guys and/or family members
- Alerts me whenever the door is locked or unlocked other than by myself via the app. This applies both when done manually or via a digital 'key,' with the latter also telling me who locked or unlocked the door.
- Looks good on my door, without having to replace my exterior of my deadbolt
- Extra screws provided (for when you eventually lose one [you WILL lose one])

Cons:
- Installation was a bit tricky. I had to fumble with the interior of my lock quite a bit to get it to fit just right, and it was still a tight fit when it came to securing the exterior panel in the house
- Does not allow more than one person to have app access/notifications. (I had to make my wife a permanent 'guest' rather than her being able to log in herself.)
- Deadbolt is a little tight, manually. (The motor works fine and all, but the actual lever inside the house is a bit harder to turn than my previous, non 'smart' deadbolt.

We live in San Francisco and have many deliveries from Amazon. There is no safe place for deliveries to be left so UPS, FedEx and USPS commonly have to make second trips if we are out. We are fortunate that we have a main front door entrance and a service door entrance. The service door allows the garbage pickup guys, who have a regular key, to get to our garbage and recycling bins. The doors leading from the service area to the rest of the house are normally locked and alarmed.

It was easy to install the camera and lock. The system works well. Deliveries from Amazon's own carrier seems as good as any other and far, far better that the USPS.

There is one flaw to the system and that is ONLY ONE ACCOUNT can be served by the lock system. This is really dumb. Jeff Bezos must have taken his stupid pills the day this system was reviewed.

OK there is now a second flaw in the system: YOU CAN'T USE IT WITH Amazon's 'SUBSCRIBE AND SAVE' facilities. Subscription purchases make a lot of sense especially if it worked with in-home delivery. I'd buy ALL the brand name household stuff we use this way if it worked. Having boring stuff like toilet rolls and other non-perishable brand name goods delivered in-home every month would be very convenient.

I've dinged Amazon a star for failing to get this integration in place. They have work to do.

Dinged Amazon ANOTHER star. It seems impossible to figure out whether an order will be delivered In-Home until an order is placed. I ordered a book and a microwave oven. The book will be delivered In-Home but not the oven! Both are being fulfilled by Amazon.com Services, Inc. It makes no sense whatever.

Three stars - works only with Amazon Cloud Cam and the Amazon Key app, not any Kevo, ZigBee or SmartHome accessories. If it only works with Amazon, the lock + cam should be $50, not $250.

Professional installation was included in the price, which seems a fair exchange after paying to give Amazon exclusive access to my door. Alas, no installers were available in the Chicago area (zip 606xx - as of Nov 2017).

I have an older wood door that is over 2" thick. Kwikset customer support (800-327-LOCK (5625)) was very helpful in sending me a thick door pack with longer screws and adapter at no charge. I also discovered that the existing screws for my Schlage deadbolt as well as the screws included for Kwikset deadbolts will fit the Convert lock. This makes it possible to fit a variety of thicker doors. The rep also explained that the mechanical parts of the Convert for Amazon Key lock are the same as Kevo Convert locks.
